Trade Deadline Overflow Thread

BOSTON, MA - JULY 10: Derrek Lee #25 of the Baltimore Orioles hits a two run homer in the first inning against the Boston Red Sox on July 10, 2011 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

Keep it going here, and I'll be covering new stuff as it happens throughout the day. Also be sure to head over to SB Nation Pittsburgh, where Adam Bittner and I have been covering pretty much every little thing related to the Pirates and the trade deadline.

I know the Pirates will keep working to make more trades today, but I wonder whether we'll actually see one. The most glaring need has already been addressed. They could still use an outfielder, and I think they'll probably kick the tires on some bullpen options, and maybe a catcher or two.

UPDATE 10:18 AM: Lyle Overbay is still with the Bucs this morning.

UPDATE 11:35 AM: Ryan Ludwick apparently continues to be a possibility, and Rob Biertempfel writes that the Pirates are currently having a "closed-door meeting," presumably to discuss another trade. Side note - is it just me, or does Twitter fail to load, like, half the time, giving all kinds of "Sorry, that page doesn't exist" or "Twitter is currently over capacity" error messages? Why do people like this website?

UPDATE 11:47 AM: The reason Derrek Lee isn't reporting today is "family issues."

UPDATE 11:49 AM: Rob Biertempfel says the Pirates are primarily looking at someone else, not Ludwick, and Jon Heyman says they're asking about B.J. Upton. I would think that Upton would probably require a serious return, whereas Ludwick would not, so I think I'd almost prefer Ludwick.

UPDATE 11:51 AM: Now Biertempfel says the guy the Bucs want is Jason Kubel.

UPDATE 12:27 PM: All this stuff about Lee's reporting time strikes me as much ado about nothing. He'll join the team on Monday, and if hits, none of us will ever remember there was a problem.

UPDATE 12:38 PM: Jon Paul Morosi says the Bucs and Twins are not "in serious talks" about Jason Kubel.

UPDATE 1:04 PM: The Indians reportedly look like they're going to land Ludwick.

I am pulling for a Correia trade...

I would like them to give Maholm a new contract after this year.

by Joey Mooney on Jul 31, 2011 8:52 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

He has an option for 9 million

Many think that is good for Maholm. What if they can give him a 4 year contract worth 20 million or so? He said he would take less.

by Joey Mooney on Jul 31, 2011 9:13 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Actually...

with the performance bonuses in the contract…Maholm’s option, barring injury, will be $11.05M.

I vote we trade Correia if the price is right, because we have to get something more than just minor league fodder in return. As for Paul, he’s having his best season and probably won’t continue it next year, so as a lefty he could fetch quite a return. I’m not saying we have to deal him but if nothing else we need to look and see what people will give.

by Akshay R on Jul 31, 2011 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

What 'bout

Trade Maholm & keep Correia? Although, if he’s willing to re-negotiate his contact (as you note below), Maholm has been a dependable innings-eater.

I think he’d be allowed to finish pitching the game and then he would be dealt. Two years ago, Kevin Hart started a game for the Cubs and when the game was over, he was dealt.

I believe the decision lies with the acquiring team. Once the deal is agreed on, usually the acquiring team requests the player be removed from the game to avoid injury. Just like Ubaldo last night.

Waking up this moring

I just found out about Lee. I scrambled to see who we gave up, then thought it was a great pickup. Baker is way down the line, probably our 4th best 1st base prospect, so we gave up nothing for a good fielding 1st baseman with some pop left.
I did not want to see anyone go that could have a future and we brought in someone that will help. Still feel that we cannot make the playoffs, but this should help us stay in the race.
As we get more and more healthy, this should be a fun few weeks with our future intact.

Maholm for Reddick?

That’s a move I’d be interested in seeing. Boston has seemed interested in upgrading that RF position for some reason and I’d love to go get Reddick if they aren’t interested. Perhaps if they go out and get get some for RF that frees up a trade of Reddick.

Maholm opens the door for Lincoln and adds a good, young RF who also happens to be killing the ball last I checked. Boston gets the durable, dependable Maholm to take the hill every 5th day and not have to worry about injury, status, etc. They can evaluate the contract situation at the end of the year and possibly re-negotiate with him.

Pirates may need to throw in a prospect or two, but this is the type of deal I’m hoping for today.

McKenry for the Bo Sox

Wasthe equvilent of a minor league deal and for Nady we did add Damaso Marte.

by Bradley James McEachern on Jul 31, 2011 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think that Nady was worth

Karstens, Ohly, D. Cutch and Tabata all by himself and we just had to throw in Marte as the premium a small market team must pay when dealing with a large market team.

If you have some insights into why a small market team needs to pay a premium, please share. I don’t understand why that would be.

by WestCoastBuc on Jul 31, 2011 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Possibly

because big market teams can wait out a trade deadline and throw ridiculous money at a free agent to cure what ails them. Karstens and Ohly were competing for a regular spot in the Yankees’ rotation and were both considered legitimate prospects when we got them. Maybe we had to throw in Marte to get both of them.

What does that mean?!

by Trogluddite on Jul 31, 2011 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

That and

The fact from what i’ve seen over the year big market GMs like Cashman and Epstein play a little hardball when it comes to dealing away decent players and they always want to get alittle more. When dealing with guys like that you alwayshave to include alittle more than you feel that’s necessary to get a deal done.

by Bradley James McEachern on Jul 31, 2011 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess there is sense to the point that

a contneding small-market team on the verge of losing a key player(s) to FA might be in a poor bargaining since it would appear to be now or never for them. It seems like that poor bargaining position would apply to any team that they dealt with not just a large-market team though.

Fortunately with a young core (such as it si) we are not in that position.

Was there a big discussion

in either of last night’s threads about Doumit being moved to the 60-day DL (as reported in this mornings PG) to make room on the 40 man for D. Lee? Am I the only one that thinks that this spells the end of both Lyle and Ryan’s days as Pirates?

Also, knowing that we can trade Doumit while he’s injured, can the gaining team revise the decision to put him on the 60-day – meaning, can the gaining team activate him from the 60-day or are they stuck w/a potted plant?

What does that mean?!

by Trogluddite on Jul 31, 2011 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

he is now free to come off the DL, retro active to may, he is eligible to come off two days ago actually, just paper moves to make room right now while he rehabs. Lyle yes. Doumit no.

Thats what she said! - Michael Gary Scott

by C Shint on Jul 31, 2011 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Okay...

Not second guessing this explanation, but neither the PG nor the Pirates transaction page lists the move as retro-active. But it was quite awhile ago that Doumit injured himself, so you’re right, his 60-day clock could be up also.

What does that mean?!

by Trogluddite on Jul 31, 2011 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

It's automatically retro active

by pantherboy on Jul 31, 2011 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

+ also

Since the “Golden 1B and Blessed Savior (so much more purgatory for me) of Pirates Baseball” hasn’t been traded to Oakland – seems like Boston didn’t like Harden’s medicals – why not make a minor deal for him as well. Perhaps two pitchers on the cusp of rule 5 protection?

I’m not going to try to convince anyone that we should sell the farm to get him, but we will likely still have a gap at 1B next year and he could be a short term solution – if he plays well, he’s under team control, so its like free ice cream.

Finally, the Bosox team site seems to think his middle name is “Eric” not “F***ing” – not sure how they got that wrong.

What does that mean?!

i hope you are being sarcastic because the minor leagues is filled with players who are not good enough

Like Craig Hansen, Andy LaRoche, Brandon Moss and Bryan Morris. The first three are spare and unusable parts and lthe last may make a useful reliever. So….if that is the haul the Astros took for Bourn they would have made a very bad trade.

by mak_DC on Jul 31, 2011 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Sounds about right.

Oberholzer’s a pretty safe bet to be a #4 starter but doesn’t have much upside, Clemens has relatively significant upside but also higher bust potential than Oberholzer, Abreu’s an older relief prospect who’s got stuff but can’t throw strikes, and Schafer’s mostly in the deal so the Astros have somebody to start in CF for the rest of the year.

And the Cards and Brewers will play each other countless times down the stretch, too, with a series b/w them starting Tuesday.

Like I’ve said all along, if we can pick up another bat before the deadline and get our guys back off the DL, we will be there at the end. This is the last time all year we have to play the two best teams in the NL.

Pirates, Indians In Mix For Ryan Ludwick
By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 9:54am CST]

The latest on Padres right fielder Ryan Ludwick, who is hitting .238/.301/.373 and has $2.2MM left on his contract…

As of last night, the Pirates were still in the mix for Ludwick along with the Indians, tweets Ken Rosenthal. The Pirates are still trying for Ludwick this morning, tweets Yahoo’s Tim Brown.

Agreed

Although it wouldn’t really be an impact trade, Ludwick is definitely an upgrade over Jones. He can hit HRs and he is an RBI machine.

If we’re gonna have a chance to win this thing, we have to get Overbay and Jones out of the lineup. They are two HUGE holes in this lineup.

by oldtimehockey09 on Jul 31, 2011 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Well...

Ludwick has nearly 30 more RBI (64) than Jones has (37). It shows he has a knack for hitting w/ RISP. And I don’t know this to be a fact, but I would say the Padres get even less runners on base in front of Ludwick than the Pirates get on in front of Jones, who has hit anywhere from 3-6 in our lineup all year (he’s hit a handful a games in the 2 spot). If that’s true, that means Ludwick is getting few chances to drive in runs, and he’s doing it.

Is it a huge improvement over Jones? Not really, but it would definitely be an upgrade.

by mspirate on Jul 31, 2011 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

RBI are basically worthless as a measure of batter quality.

There’s a good case to be made for Ludwick over Jones, but RBI don’t have any part of it.

by oldtimehockey09 on Jul 31, 2011 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

If he wants to demonstrate that Ludwick is better than average at driving runners home, he should take five minutes and figure out how many RBI opportunities Ludwick’s actually had, or look at his base/run state numbers, or something like that.

Raw RBI totals are worse than useless in a situation like this.

RISP #s aren’t great as a predictive tool, but they do have value in determining the past real-world value a player contributed (even if that can’t be extrapolated forward).

I’d take those over raw RBI totals, too.

With the trade market the past 2 days, I think any of the pitchers could fetch a much better return than originally thought.

I really just don't understand all this backlash

If we can upgrade with a marginal cost, why wouldn’t we? We aren’t nine games out of first. A small investment to fight for the future of this team is worth it. IF we can bring asses into seats for a fight to the finish, it can pay dividends for next year and beyond. As a fan base, we have to support this team. Now, I am not accusing anyone here of not being loyal, but for God sakes, if we can make a deal to make the team better, why wouldn’t we?

Fans are clingy complaining dip****s who will never ever be grateful for any concession you make. The sooner you tune out their shrill, tremulous voices, the better you'll be.

Ludwick’s another guy that would probably cost next to nothing, so if he replaces Diaz, why not?

He doesn’t have great numbers, but what matters is whether he’s better than the current players. Now if you can get something better, great, but Ludwick is better than nothing.

by Adam Reynolds on Jul 31, 2011 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

He costs slightly less than Derrek Lee for the rest of the season…about $2.3M.

There's always a chance...

i just wonder if Upton would cost a Top 5 prospect. I think he would.

This is just a straight up hunch, but I think NH is considering moving Marte. Maybe I’m completely off, but that’s just what I think.

by mspirate on Jul 31, 2011 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Remember, the Astros said multiple times they didn’t think they would trade Pence. It’s all gamesmanship to try and extort a bigger price.

by Brakeman8 on Jul 31, 2011 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I would move Marte if Upton was the return. Upton is under contract for next year, hopefully they could work something out longer than that and that would fill Marte’s spot.

Just wondering what the asking price is for Upton?

Wow really? I was under the impression that the Twins had already announced he was off the market since they’re still in division comeback mode. If not then I wouldn’t mind getting him, though it would depend on the price.

by Akshay R on Jul 31, 2011 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes baby YES!

As long as he doesn’t cost Taillon, Allie, Heredia or Sanchez, I’d do it. And I’d seriously consider dealing Marte if I were NH. This is a legit OF bat that we need.

And the Twins’ asking price WILL come down as the deadline gets closer and closer, although I don’t know by how much.

Am I the only one who’s in favor of this?

I think it’d take much more than that, especially the way the markets been. Probably would have to include Marte instead of Gorkys to being with.

Hmm, maybe not much more, but more

by TravisDW on Jul 31, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe so...

and that may be what a deal like this hinges on, and I’d seriously consider it if I were NH.

But like I said earlier, I also think the Twins’ asking price will come down a little, and with Kubel being a FA after this year, the Twins may not make us give up as much.

But I’m just thinking out loud

by mspirate on Jul 31, 2011 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I think if we do give up the players to get him...

the FO would try to re-sign him.

Won’t matter. Mondesi signed with us at the start of the season and left 2 months later. Lee only has 2 months on his contract, so if he finds he doesn’t like playing for us all he has to do is wait out 2 months(which I would think would be better with a contender like the Bucs rather than a non-contender like Baltimore) and then find a new place to play.

For

the record..

Kubel is a type B free-agent right on the cusp of type A status. I’m not sure about how willing he’d be to accept arbitration, but I’d have to think he’d want a bit more cash and a long-term deal.

Likewise, looks like the Yankees are going after Wandy, as seen above.

Finally, seems the most likely landing place for Health Bell is St. Louis. I’d love for them to give up a decent bit of their farm for Bell (Tyrell Jenkins perhaps). Might make it harder on us the rest of the way, but I’m all for teams in the NL central mortgaging their future.

On that note, considering their haul from the Pence deal (which I liked), I thought their return for Bourn was poor, so what could have become a solid farm system down in Houston still only looks decent.

Since I’ve now lost all objectivity, let’s throw it to you guys and gals. Is this the worst trade Ed Wade has pulled off with the Astros? Is this one of the worst five trades in the past 10 years for the franchise? Can I be any more over-the-top? (Yes, yes and yes are my answers).

and

The Astros got a terrible deal here. Terrible.

Da'Sean Butler - A Mountaineer Legend

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jul 31, 2011 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I completely agree.

The Braves stole candy from a baby. Bourne is one of if not the best leadoff hitter in this league, and the Braves didn’t have to give up ANY of their elite prospects like Teheran or Minor.

If I were the Astros, I would’ve asked for at least one of those. If they aren’t willing to do it, don’t make the deal.

However, I can at least understand what Wade was thinking. He has a severely depleted farm system, and the Braves offered him four prospects for one player. As far as quantity goes, I can understand the deal some. But I still don’t think the Astros got enough in terms of quality.

Barry Bonds……it would fit this year in Pittsburgh sports…..Jagr screws the Pens, Burress teases the Steelers….

by Justin84 on Jul 31, 2011 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

It would fit if Bonds spent four months teasing about how desperately he wants to come back and redeem himself, flew in for long, loving meetings with Huntington, Hurdle and the players, and then at the last minute signed with Milwaukee for $300,000 more.

by camoseven on Jul 31, 2011 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. If he wanted like 3 days or something people would have a legitimate gripe, but to expect him to go immediately to a new team from an away game is not right. He deserves a day to go home, spend some time with his family, and pack his things before coming to Pittsburgh.

You didn’t know. I didn’t know either.

by Bradley James McEachern on Jul 31, 2011 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Na, I'm still gonna' list it as a (hopefully very) small concern....

He had to take care of some things with his family? Did the Orioles give him off today so he wouldn’t be at their game today? Probably not.

The Orioles were then scheduled to go on a road trip to KC – so he was going to be away from home anyway (although he had a long homestand following that).

Again, when you’re in a profession where one spouse moves a lot, families adapt to that. It’s unlikely that he’s going to uproot his entire family for his two month stint in P’burgh, so its not like he has to go home and sell the house. Also, having the wife at home makes it easier to coordinate anything he needs routed to P’burgh.

Obviously, none of this applies in a situation where his children or wife have an emergency, but that’s not what he invoked when delaying his arrival.

What does that mean?!

(b) had to give up some good prospects in exchange for Pence.

Biertempfel's blog...

indicated that a decision would be made on Cedeno before tomorrow’s game. Either he’s healthy enough to play, or he goes on the DL, says Hurdle. Sounds like he will be available to play tomorrow.

Someone going on the DL may be the only way for Overbay to stay on the roster after today.

I say we look to deal Overbay for some random org. guys, and if nothing comes up, then DFA him. He’s simply not worth keeping around now that we have Lee, especially since Jones can play 1B in a pinch if Lee gets injured or something.

He is most definitely a guy that I want to be a member of this team, and really hope he can do big things to help us. I was just reading that despite the fact that his daughter misdiagnosed in 2007, he still helped fight the cause and was a champion for research for the cure. That my friends, is a spectacular dude.
