The Hole at First

I wasn't a huge fan of the Lyle Overbay signing but some of the other guys that I would have been okay with either signed deals that were too much money (Aubrey Huff) or are underperforming (Derrek Lee) I was content with the Overbay signing.

ZiPS had Overbay at .247/.333/.415

Bill James had him at .253/.345/.431

Actual .234/.309/.358

But even with that poor slash line its his defense that has been the real disappointment. I hadn't watched Overbay too closely in the past but this year he is tied for the ML lead in errors by a first basemen with 8 (Prince Fielder and Daric Barton also have 8). He's made the occasional nice play but he has been far from Gold Glove caliber.

I don't want to annoint Alex Presley as the next great thing but things are looking good quickly with him and when Tabata comes back you would think that our outfield is set. Pedro should be back soon and with Cedeno playing such great defense the only real hole seems to be a first.

I wouldn't trade any top prospects for some of the guys out there but a power hitting first basemen would be a great addition to the lineup. There aren't many out there but there are some options.

Carlos Pena - My personal favorite, has power that will play at PNC and has a very good glove.

James Loney- Dodgers say they aren't trading him but he doesn't hit for enough power for my liking.

Derrek Lee -he's performing at about the same level as Overbay so I don't think it would be an upgrade

Gaby Sanchez- He's 27 and I don't think there is any way the Marlins trade him unless you give up the farm, which the Pirates are probably not willing to do.

Chris Davis- He absolutely destroys AAA pitching but hasn't seem to put it together in the majors on a consistent basis. He only has a 172 ML at bats in the last two years and 58 strikeouts in those at bats.

Jeff Baker- not a true first basemen and he's right handed but the price shouldn't  be too high.
