Visions of 1988

I have been lurking Bucs Dugout for the past 3 years and finally have gotten around to post something. I enjoy all the different posts and the divergent opinions. So here it goes...

The more I watch the Buccos this season the more of the 1988 vibe I get. I know it is common for people to compare this team to the Freak Show of 1997, but I feel the '88 season is more fitting. In 1988 we had some very promising young players such as Bonds, Bonilla, Drabek, and Van Slyke for example. The Freak Show team did not have anyone that I could recall as a possible super star outside of Kendall. During the '88 season the Bucs competed night in and night out and fought it out with other NL East teams. Pirate fans could see the light at the end of the tunnel. There was a nucleus of young players who were only getting better. This years team has that same sort of feel, but with more re-enforcements in the low minors. Don't be shocked at a slight regression next year. The '89 Pirates dropped below .500 before tearing it up for 3 straight years. If that were to happen to this team, all of the young power arms will be right on the cusp of coming up or barely into their major league careers.

The Freak Show of 1997 was exactly that, a Freak Show. There was no rhyme or reason the team competed outside of a really weak NL Central. The current team has more players to prolong success over a greater period of time. It is an exciting time to be a Bucco fan.
