A Few Draft Comments From BA

Jim Callis has a few interesting comments on the Pirates' draft in a BA chat:

Top five drafts in order:

Nationals, Pirates, Diamondbacks, Red Sox ... not sure yet of No. 5. Jays are close

Keep in mind that the Nats had two first and one supplemental round pick, the D'backs had two picks in the first seven plus a supplemental round pick, Boston had two first and two supplemental round picks, and the Jays, apart from their own first round pick, had four supplemental first round picks plus two second round picks.  The Pirates . . . no extra picks.  And unlike the last two years, there was no 1-1 guy who stood head and shoulders above everybody else.

Reaction to Bell signing:

Shocked. I do believe he was sincere about attending Texas, and if I had a dollar for every person who told me he might not sign for $10 million, I could have come close to covering the $5 million tab for signing him. On Aug. 15, I though his chances of signing were no more than 1 percent, and that's only because I'd never say never. I thought it was going to take somewhere close to $8 million at a minimum. Great move by the Pirates to take Bell and get him signed.

Personally, I think the I'm-not-signing bit was a Boras tactic.

Callis also repeats his view that hard slotting won't happen.  Meanwhile, Jayson Stark has written that Seligula has promised many people in MLB that it will.
