Minor League Open Thread: Robbie Grossman Draws 100th Walk
There's a Steelers preseason game tonight, but it's a quiet day for the Pirates, so here's a minor-league thread.
Sean Gallagher and Indianapolis host Louisville at 7:05 PM.
New Hampshire crushed Altoona earlier today, 11-2. New Hampshire's Nestor Molina struck out nine batters in five innings in his second Class AA start, and Anthony Claggett and Tim Alderson allowed nine runs in relief of Aaron Pribanic for the Curve. (Alderson's nifty start to the season seems like a long time ago, doesn't it?)
Nate Baker starts for Bradenton against Charlotte at 7:00 PM.
Jameson Taillon starts for West Virginia against Delmarva at 7:05.
State College is on the road against Hudson Valley, and Trent Stevenson, who was sent back to short-season ball in late July, will start. He has just four strikeouts in his first 18 innings there. Pirates 37th-rounder Rodarrick Jones made his State College debut yesterday.
Everybody's favorite Lithuanian teenage pitcher, Dovydas Neverauskas, took the loss in a (presumably?) rain-shortened GCL game and the GCL Jays.
UPDATE 10:22 PM: Robbie Grossman walked for the 100th time this season, and also his 11th homer, for Bradenton tonight.

Yeah, Alderson is so close to being done it’s not even funny. Though I guess Dubee had a bad relief outing last night, so maybe NH just loves set-up men.
Thank you Ned Colletti.
This
If he’s not close to minor-league free agency and doesn’t need to be added to the 40-man, no urgency this year. Although P2 seems to indicate he is Rule 5 eligible next year.

I like
the 5K in 3.2 innings though. I really think this is a kid we will be talking about big time about 2 years from today.

Per a McCauley tweet...
@ScottDMcCauleyScott McCauley
Pedro Alvarez is back with @indyindians and C Jason Jaramillo to the DL. JJ hasn’t played since Friday
Wonder if we’ve seen the last of JJ in uniform in the organization?
Yes
With Fryer, the Fort, and Sanchez moving up, JJ is organizational depth.
What does that mean?!

Could be ....
He’s shown he can be a competent big-league back-up catcher. With the dearth of good catching around, we get what, a C prospect for him?
What does that mean?!
i dont think he'll be traded. i just think he'll be elsewhere.
bowker, clement, jaramillo… maybe wimberly… burres, gallagher
Taillon not that sharp tonight
can’t put guys away tonight with two strikes. 2 walks, 2 HBP. must be struggling with control.
Has 2 K’s thru 2 2/3.
Sale the Grossman!
No . . . wait . . .
Free the Grossman!!

Dan Moskos
Last two outings
2 1/3, 7 hits, 7 ER, 6 BB
To whomever frequents MILB games
If you run into DL, please, kick him in the balls for me. And when he’s on the ground writhing in pain, lean in and just simply say, “You know why.” And walk away (or run so you don’t get arrested for assault :p).

He may never be great
But I still think he puts together several years in the majors. He’s left handed, he throws in the low 90’s (I remember hearing 97 earlier this year in AAA) and he doesn’t have control problems. Considering it was his first year in the bigs this year, I was actually fairly satisfied with him…

Yeah, because that’s what I want out of my former top five draft picks. I want them to put together a several not great years in the majors. Definitely a win right there if he does that. Especially when that specific guy we chose instead of a future franchise catcher.
So you wouldn't have..
24 yr old league average player (2.0 WAR last year and 2.4 WAR this year) over a reliever who will be nothing more than a replacement player +1 .3 WAR (imo)? Wieters still has an extremely high ceiling. It’s funny to me the people that act like he’s a bust because he didn’t come right into the league and hit 30 HR’s right away. I’ve seen him play and he will be an All-Star catcher one day. I’m not ready to call Alvarez a bust let alone a guy who has performed well at a very tough position in the hardest division in baseball.

I never said that he was a good pick
Or that I would take him over Wieters. Or that I think several ok years as a LOOGY justifies the pick. I was only replying to the comment that he’s not a ML player.

Agreed...
his slider is far from wipeout so he doesn’t really have an outpitch. Not a good thing if you don’t have really good command.

When Moskos was wild
He didn’t seem to be missing badly. He just wasn’t hitting his spots. I think that can be improved on, especially for a guy who will get plenty of chances (in Pittsburgh or elsewhere) because of his draft spot. He does need an out pitch and I wasn’t really impressed with his slider much this year but for a rookie, left-handed reliever (if you disregard the built in expectations or lack thereof becuase of the Wieters fiasco) with his solid MiLB track record, I’d say it was a decent debut.

Does anyone know who the probable pitcher is for Altoona this Tuesday?
I have a ticket offer, but I’m not sure I want to go. My scant research says it’s Pribanic, but I’m looking to confirm.
No jinx no jinx no jinx.
Saw 1 & 1/2 of the Spikes games
- Really want to go to sleep and drink beer, but I guess I can’t let this get stale. I got to yesterday’s game against the Renegades (Rays NY-Penn league team); work & weather cut into tonights game. Dutchess County stadium is a nice little thing and when you consider that the NY-Penn League is pretty low on the totem pole, a very nice stadium.
- Spikes hitters – were all AWOL both games. Very few balls left the infield; those that did were generally shallow. The Renegades, on the other hand, were driving balls 390 feet dead center or 300+ down either line.
- Gamache (20 yo, 6th Round/2011, 3B) was disappointing. Yesterday, 3 or 4 weak grounders to the right side, all resulting in DPs or easy put-outs. Tonight, his outs were to the opposite side of the infield.
- Junior Sosa (20 yo, 2008 Int’l FA, OF) apparently started on the GCL roster. No power. He laid down a horrible sacrifice bunt that the 1B inexplicably did not charge and hustled out a single yesterday. He showed some good speed on the basepaths (took part in a double steal) and in center field and there were several plays were his speed helped him cut off balls in the gap.
- Wesley Freeman (21 yo, 16th round/2008, OF) struck out badly twice tonight (3 weak swings the first time, tied up inside the second). He may be reaching the end of his rope if he can’t hit in his 3rd season.
- Carlos Mesa got one of the few solid hits yesterday, a nice double.
- The bottom of the line-up – Ponce, Singer, and Lewis – did very little at the plate.
The Spikes’ two runs yesterday were unearned. With runners on 1st and 2nd, no one out, and the top of the line-up up, what did the Spikes do? You guessed it – bunts. Bad bunts which didn’t help. They had a double still, passed ball, and then I think a sac fly. I missed most of their scoring today, but only two fly balls made it out of the infield, and neither was deep whilst the Renegades hitters were pounding their balls deep and hard.
Pitching (no gun, so no speed info)
Nick Kingham (19 yo, 4th Round/2010, RHP) – 13/19 1st pitch strikes. 60 pitches over 5 innings. 38 k, 22 bb. Kept the ball low & outside (to RH batters) and was effective. When he left the ball up and caught more of the plate, the ball got hit hard. Fielded his position well – had several comebackers.
Jordan Cooper (21 yo, 23rd Round/2011, RHP) – 5/8 1st pitch strikes, 35 pitches in 2 innings 19/16 k/bb. Seemed to throw the hardest of all the pitchers from either side, but his shot group was everywhere. When he got one over the plate and contact was made, they went a looooong way.
Emmanuel DeLeon (20 yo, Int’l FA 2007, RHP) – closed out Wednesday’s game. 5/6 1st pitch k’s and 13/8 k/bb. Did a nice job.
I missed Stevenson’s implosion tonight – 6 straight hits in the 2nd inning – but he seemed to settle down in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings. Like Kingham, he seemed to be trying to spot low and outside (to RH batters). When his pitches got hit, they were tatooed. From the 3rd to the 5th, his numbers inverted – 3 1st pitch balls (for 4 batters) in the 3rd and 8 balls to 6 ks, but by the 5th 4/5 1st pitch k’s and 9ks to 3 bb’s.
Kleis came in and mowed them down in the 6h and 7th, but his defense let him down in the 7th. With runners on 1st and 2nd, no one out, Ponce missed a throw from 1Bman Lashmet. Than Gamache let a routine grounder go under his glove. But it just seems unfair to send a 6 foot, 8 inch pitcher out in the NY-Penn League. He just looked a lot bigger than the others.
Purjess (from this year’s draft?), the only LH Pitcher I saw, came in to help out Kleis and did a good job. He was throwing strikes and got out of the inning.
The Renegades catcher tonight threw 4 of 6 base-runners out on attempted steals, made Skirving look silly by picking him off 1st, then nearly caught Ponce napping at 1st two innings later.
That’s all I’ve got! Player info from P2 (the WTM profiles and depth chrats.
What does that mean?!

Sosa's bunting
At the Spikes-Lake Monsters game Sosa ran into his own bunt for an out (runners had to go back to the base). He’s major-league ready!
I’m a little surprised that the Pirates let their minor-league managers call bunts at all.

Really? I’m surprised that they don’t designate an inning every game is Bunt Inning, where everyone who bats bunts.

Every inning is Bunt Inning in the minors.
You're entitled to your own opinions. You're not entitled to your own facts.
that's kind of my point
Is bunting in the minors really helping players’ development? If the Bucs make their pitchers throw nothing but fastballs, I’d figure they’d make their batters swing the bat.

All the bunts came in the bottom of the sixth, I believe.
I’m old school. When you get the gift of having your #9 hitter get on and the top of the line-up up with no one out, you reach for the lumber, not the lightning.
Sosa’s bunt caused me to groan. It was not an attempt for a hit, it was a very bad sacrifice.
The next guy’s bunt (even before it was unsuccesful) caused me to mutter, louder than I should have, “Stop the damn bunting already!”
I really think it was a developmental thing, where the manager has a list of scenarios where he calls bunts, regardless of whether it helps win the game, so that players develop.
What does that mean?!
