ehh
theres nobody on that list that excites me more than anyone we already have. I think you gotta go into the offseason this year with the mindset of next years starting outfield being McCutchen in CF (obvisouly), Tabata in RF, and Presley in LF. If Presley starts to falter I think you go to Gorkys. If Gorkys struggles I think it’ll be about time to call up Marte.
Regardless theres no reason to make a trade or sign any FA outfielders. There are much bigger needs….
LF Presley
RF Tabata
CF McCutchen
4th OF Hernandez
5th OF/Back up 1B Jones
XP to Indy as depth or released
Diaz released or given away
Ludwick non tendered

Ludwick's a FA anyway.

I like Presley but I'm not going to etch it in stone that he will be the starting LF next year.
He’s still got quite a bit to prove. He will get his chances to be sure, but let’s temper our enthusiasm for the moment.
パトリック
also, given his injury
which isnt a regular injury, but a nerve-related one, iirc. I liked him a lot in what I saw but injuries can complicate things.
Bring back Nate McClouth
and watch him regain his 2008 form!
FYI, Francoeur has been re-signed by the Royals
Stand pat. Nobody on that list is much better than what we have; at worst they’re not better enough to justify the money we’d have to pay them.
Should we thank KC
for taking one of the worst players off the market?

No...
Jeff has never actually been a bad player. He has terrible plate discipline, but his numbers are always decent enough to be a starter in RF on most teams.
ETHAN MARTIN!!!!
You're right, I'm being a little harsh on Francouer
But they still shouldn’t have signed him to that type of deal. I find it odd (and kind of troubling) how the Royals most of all seem to be completely blind to the concept of OBP these days. Some of their other signings seem to reflect that.
its mainly because their prospects are having poor years.
if will myers has a better 2012, he’ll take over for Francouer in RF soon enough
And then the Royals
will be stuck with a horrible contract. They probably could have let him walk, and still been the highest bidder for him (at a lower price), from what I’ve read.
Free your ass and your mind will follow.

doesnt surprise me...
this is the same team that goes after jose guillen, mike jacobs and give gil meche $55MM (which he turned down 11MM when he retired)
I would disagree in your assessments of Francoeur
Francoeur has completely remade his physique, is emphasizing squaring up the ball, and is taking a few walks. His wOBA is .344 and his wRC+ is 115. He knew he had to change, and Kevin Seitzer is apparently a superb batting coach. Francoeur has always been a decent fielder, and losing a bunch of weight has done wonders.
These comments apply to the player of 2009-2010, not the player of 2011. BTW, he still has those scary eyes and occasionally swings from his heels.
Viva Clemente!
Kubel
buts that it, I’d much rather they take the internal route because it really might be blocking someone who deserves to play and can contribute down the road. I like Kubel, he’s prob the best available, atleast to me, but for the money and playing time I’d like to see Presley start and go from there.
I wouldn't want to pay to much for somebody with Marte in AAA
The more he plays, the more I think he’s going to be a stud. I dont want him blocked by somebody’s contract.
This
Marte is either a future star outfielder for the Pirates (and with him, Tabata and Cutch, that is a great OF) or he is the main piece in a trade package for a SS/1B.
This team will be good for years to come in the future if they can keep their players together and are willing to spend the way the SF Giants do (about 90-100 million a year). If they win championships, they can afford that, even in this small of a market.

No love for Cuddyer?
He could play LF, 1B, or 3B (if we move Pedro to 1st or AAA). And in addition, the guy can hit.
I don’t think of Presley as anything but a 4th OF. He’s done well this year, but it’s only 2 weeks of hitting. If we can’t find a better option, AP in left, Cuddyer at 3rd, and DLee at 1st would be great (assuming we can sign Cuddyer and Lee, of course).
i'd rather see Cuddyer at 1B than Lee, but i'd rather see kubel or alvarez at 1B over both those other guys
White Angus on Cuddyer
How much would you “pay” for Michael Cuddyer next year? Do you remember that the Pirates were interested in Cuddyer about 5-7 years ago when he was a prospect? They were shopping Brian Giles.
me personally? i wouldnt spend a dime. mainly because i only have a nickel
i honestly dont care whom the FO gets to play in the burgh, i’ll ROOT them on no matter what. but im not really a Cuddyer guy. hes good, but you can do better.
Cuddyer
IMHO is by far the best of this lot. The question is are the Bucs willing to pay what he will cost, and is he worth what he will cost?
The Twins
Apparently want to keep Cuddyer and he apparently wants to stay in Minnesota. I don’t think it will be a money issue.

eh
Tabata – Cutch – Presley
Gorkys and Jones on the bench. I can’t see Diaz sticking past 2011.
Thats what she said! - Michael Gary Scott
Diaz must go.
Thank you BUC fans for supporting the idea that Diaz brings NOTHING to our table. I cannot wait to see a team without him.

I think the OF is set for the time being
Tabata, McCutchen and Presley the starters, with Diaz, Gorkys, Paul or Jones backing up
I think the Pirates will look to try and trade for a 1B this off-season, that can be here for a couple years.
Does
that mean Jones may not be around next year? I thought it was interesting that in the press conference a couple days ago Hurdle was asked about the “great month of August Jones was having”. Hurdle quickly responded that it has been a good month. Was he implying something there…. or Hurdle just being Hurdle?
You never know, but Jones has power, and the BUCs have so little of it. Diaz has no power. Even Harrison now has more homers than he does. I don’t know how we would replace his power within our organization. He also is a pretty good first baseman and I am comfortable with him in the OF. He has a decent if not above average arm and speed that brings a stolen base here and there. He has to make better decisions on the base-paths. I think .260 with 18 homers and 70 RBIs can be counted on if he plays fairly regularly.

Rightly or wrongly...
I suspect that Jones will be the Pirates 1B in 2012.
another year of alvarez sticking at 3B?
by white angus on Aug 24, 2011 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions
IMO Alvarez will be at 3b his entire Pirates career. The only way he moves off is if Mercer/Holt/Cunningham can field AND hit well enough that they should play 2b and move Walker over to 3b. This of course then makes Walker’s offense for a 3b lackluster. So idk could go a number of different ways depending on how the previously mentioned Mercer/Holt/Cunningham combo works out. And then we still have to find d’Arnaud a spot in all of this. Factor in Neil and we have 5 guys that over the course of the next few seasons can play MI.
Thats what she said! - Michael Gary Scott
as said about
only true upgrades would be Kubel and Cuddyer. i would like to see either of them here, but my guess is that they will get atleast 10 mil a year somewhere else. other than that i guess AP gets a spot. lack of power is just as bad as the outfield this year though.
but an outfield of presley/cutch/tabata could do some serious damage too
if alvarez can ever come around, the OFs can fly on the bases in front of him and walker. could cause mild heart attacks for opposing pitchers and catchers

Roster Crunch
I think with the roster crunch coming you cannot really go get someone for an outfield spot since we have decent options now. Thus, I think the starters are Presley, McCutchen, and Tabata. I think the back up outfielders are Diaz and Gorkys. Gorkys is ready for back up action and could serve as an okay fill in if an injury pops up. Diaz has shown he can pinch hit, and his average is not that bad. I would prefer someone with power, but I don’t think the Pirates are going to pay him to go away, so Diaz will stay.
I have Jones as the 1B by the way with a possible platoon with Pearce. Either guy could be an emergency outfielder too, so the Pirates would have lots of options on the 25 man roster.
