(I posted this earlier in the "Overbay Released" thread. WestCoastBuc suggested that it might not be seen there, and suggested I start a new thread..... so here it is, slightly edited.)
I’m a newbie here at BucsDugout, after many years of posting on other Pirate boards. There have been discussions on those other boards about Huntington’s effectiveness as the Pirates’ GM. With the amount of traffic I see on this board, I’m confident there have been similar discussions here….. and I’m sorry I missed those.
My personal view: No GM gets everything right. However, the majority of moves made by a small market GM need to turn out well for that franchise to have any hope of being (and staying) competitive. Although Huntington has made a few good deals (e.g., the Nady trade and Dotel trade come to mind), it seems to me that he has made more bad deals (e.g., Iwamura signing, Church signing, Overbay signing, Bay trade, Gorzelanny trade). For the first couple of years, I was inclined to give Huntington the benefit of the doubt due to his "superior" amateur drafts. At this point, however, it appears that many of Huntington’s highly touted draftees (with Pedro right on top of the list) aren’t coming close to expectations. As a result, I had been an emphatic proponent of Huntington being replaced….. after than horrendous 105-loss season in his third year at the helm.
Then, as the Pirates performed well (in terms of wins and losses) for the first 100 games or so this year, it appeared that perhaps Huntington had been vindicated. However, during the current losing streak, this team looks exactly like last year’s team….. and the best description of Huntington’s tenure seems to be that he’s better than Littlefield (which ain’t sayin’ much).
At any rate, I’d appreciate a few comments from board regulars on how you view Huntington’s performance. And if someone could summarize the consensus from past discussions, that would be gravy. Thanks in advance for any responses.
