Pirates Vs. Diamondbacks, 19 September 2011
Pittsburgh Pirates at Arizona Diamondbacks, Sep 19, 2011 9:40 PM EDT
This will be Karstens' last start of the season. Whatever happens tonight, the guy deserves some serious props for a better year than I ever thought he'd have.

On This Date.......
in 1940, Ralph Kiner becomes the first NL player to hit 50 home runs in two different seasons with a blast against the Giants.
in 1974, the Bucs close in on another NL East crown with a 8-6 win versus St. Louis. Down 4-2 in the seventh, Manny Sanguillen and Al Oliver singled off Rich Folkers. Al Hrabosky came in and was greeted by a Stargell double, putting the Bucs in the lead. Richie Zisk was walked intentionally, and Hebner slammed a three run homer to give Pittsburgh a seemingly comfortable lead. But the Cards pulled to within two in the ninth, and Dave Giusti came on to strikeout Reggie Smith, Ted Simmons, and Joe Torre with the tying runs on base.
Giusti had been on in the eighth, and so created the trouble...
…that said, his comeback and Bob Prince’s call of it was as exciting as anything I’ve ever heard that involved the Pirates.

Karstens definitely deserves an ATTABOY...
for his performance this season.
Had anyone suggested on Opening Day that Jeff Karstens would be the “staff ace” this year…they probably would have been asked to take a drug test.
Karstens
I agree. He was outstanding until he hit the wall. However, I never thought he would come close to what he did this year.
Proud fan of Pittsburgh's professional sports teams and the Pirates too.

The problem with the Pirates staff is...
that “The Wall” appears to be 150-160 innings for our pitchers. There are going to be at least 44 NL starters that have pitched 170 innings at the end of the season…an average of about 3 a team. It’s very possible that the Pirates won’t have any. We should have a couple of starters at 180+.
Anyone else conflicted?
Always want the Bucs to win and would like Karstens and Morton to get 10 wins. But I’d also like to see the Dbacks catch the Brewers and get homefield playoff advantage against them.

Yeah.
Not conflicted at all.
I always want the Pirates to win.

I see the Pirates offense hasn’t caught up with the team yet, just like lost luggage. I guess it’s missing somewhere between Pittsburgh and LA…because it didn’t show up in LA, either.
Miss the first game?
The Pirates won that one 6-1, Ross Ohlendorf hit a 3 run homer.

I’ll give you a hint: It’s not someone who isn’t me.
Thank you Ned Colletti.
You young whipper snapper.
Must be fun to have a birthday when the ground isn’t covered in snow. When my parents pass away, I’m gonna change my birthday to August. And my name to Xander. I love my parents, but they messed up a lot of stuff with me.

gotta wonder about the power outage
once traded or Free agent players come to Pittsburgh as Charlie had posted earlier..
Have to think more/better protection would help Ludwick? D Lee has been the only guy to sort of contribute more as far as HRs and Defense.
So, 5 strike outs so far in 4 innings?
Saw on a thread the other day that we aren’t the team with the most batting K’s though. Who strikes out more than we do, anyway?
Going into tonight...
Nats 1238
Padres 1237
Pirates 1230
Maybe tonight...
at the rate things are going.
BTW Thunder
I appreciate it that when I throw these questions out that you often are the one to post the answers. Thanks.

I was thinking about
If I was a working adult right now, and not a college student, and was making very good money— if some higher being came down and told me that next year that Pedro would have a 35+ homer year and his career trajectory would become what we thought it would be last September for a couple grand… I would do it.
At least this game is going pretty fast.
If it keeps this up, I might stay up for the whole thing.

I'll reiterate what I said earlier
If it guaranteed Pedro would hit 35 homers next year and develop into the player we all thought he would be last September I would drop a grand or two… if I wasn’t a college student.
With Doumit's
6 consecutive, and12 overall – ties Kennedy’s best.

aren’t going to take it easy on us. They still have 3 with the Giants over the weekend, so they aren’t safe yet.
