The Irony Of The 1-0 Arizona Loss

Arizona

is 89-65 headed for the playoffs. The Bucs are 68-86 headed for the Golf Courses. At first glance, the Pitching seems pretty even. Arizona ERA 3.80. BUCS 3.99.  However, the Bucs have given up 102 more hits and 69 more walks.

The hitting seems close as well. Arizona is hitting .249 to the Bucs .242. Arizona, however, beats the Bucs at nearly every category, more doubles, more triples, more stolen bases, more walks, less strikeouts. The one glaring stat that stands out is Homers. The DBacks have hit 168 compared to the Pirates meager 101. The difference in the game? A solo shot by Justin Upton of course. Bottom line: Naturally we could use more power. Just as important the Pirates have to start drafting pitchers with power and control( Tailiion was a good start). The same for the offense. The emphasis has to be on contact when drafting or trading for a player. The walk to strikeout ratio has to be seriously considered, not just to look at how many RBI a guy had a few years back.

The DBacks do all of the little things a little better than us. Plain and simple that's why they will be playing more games than us. Despite this horrible end to the season Pirate fans should find hope within one basic fact. The DBacks sucked last year.
