On This Date.......
in 1907, Nick Maddox no-hits Brooklyn, 2-1, the first in Pirate history.
in 1969, Bob Moose hurls a no-hitter at Shea Stadium, beating the Mets, 4-0.
in 2011, Charlie Morton no-hits Arizona, 3-0
I see what you did there...
I sure hope your “oracle powers” are working correctly and you haven’t read those mystic signs in reverse!
Pretty nice season from Morton
I feel like he made a lot of progress, and still has a lot he can improve on, especially since he relatively recently switched to his new motion.
Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?
http://www.bucsdugout.com/2011/5/16/2174135/poll-should-huntington-be-retained
Considering...
that Morton had a career 5.98 ERA going into the season…it would have been tough to not make progress and remain in the rotation.
On the radio here... and the feed was in a fritz... what'd he do?
by Chileburger on Sep 20, 2011 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Laid out to make a catch
that kept the ball from going into the RF corner. Very nice play.
What does that mean?!

Just saw in on Gameday… beautiful… Hope they put up a video of Pedro’s stop, too.

Sounds like...
Charlie owes his outfield several beers already.
PEDRO!!!
He’s been walking more and striking out less over the past week. I like it.
That's true
Didn’t he walk three times on night?

Pedro hit a home run?
C’mon guys, how did we really score? Next thing you know, you’ll be saying you saw this guy…

What does that mean?!
Actually, it was Pedro CIRIACO, Trog...
You must have some wax in your ears!
:)
by Chileburger on Sep 20, 2011 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Was it one of those t-ball home runs
were you either bunt or softly hit groundball and the defense throws it around all over the place, because can Ciriaco hit it out of the infield?

What's up all?
Been waiting a long time to see a Pedro bomb! How’s Chuck looking so far?
#AlltheBuntsAreBad
Just saw the Pedro HR...
What a sweet swing. What a beautiful swing. That’s what we signed him for, and it’s a far cry from those half-hearted whiffs in the dirt we saw before. And he’s taking walks now? Winter ball, who needs it?
I gotta feeling the “buzz” around the NL was to throw Pedro a first pitch fastball down the middle cause he won’t swing at it. Hopefully he keeps making ’em pay for a while.

“room service” fastball.
You're missing quite a show so far here, Mr. E.
Great game for the good guys to this point.

All we need is a win tonight and you can be sure these aren’t the same old pirates!

Nice hustle, Charlie
Could have had the bases loaded for NFW.
You're entitled to your own opinions. You're not entitled to your own facts.
I'm on the radio feed myself
But Jones had a spectacular diving catch to end the 1st, otherwise the Dbacks had some runs. Pedro had a great defensive play, too, though I think no one was on at the time.

Uh-oh... IBB for the pitcher
That strategy seems to have backfired a few times on us this year if I remember correctly…
Hope it works here!
I guess they respect his power
Didn’t want to give him a good pitch to hit with a 3-1 count

Ha, we've got to get him to refuse winter ball more often
Once a night sounds good
WOW!!!
Alvarez great defensive play – ranged far to his left, strong accurate throw (if a bit low)
What does that mean?!
Morton ?
what the hell is goin on ?! did the Bucs have a “players only meeting” today or somthin ?

Holy... guacamole... Batman...
What’s up with the team tonight? Man, sure hope that the trainers figure out what was put in their cornflakes today… Keep it up, boys, keep it up…
OK
Besides being under 100 comments, we now know we need to take AFL hitting stats w/a grain of salt – Charlie nearly hit one out to a deep part of the park.
What does that mean?!
Charlie!
Who are these bizarro Pirates that get hits??

he was so slow on the break back to the base that the ump was gonna call it out unless they completely botch it
slow and
he acted surprised when the ball was thrown – “WHAT?! They can pick me off????”

Anyone else hate these all-cutter pitchers?
I mean the cutter’s a great pitch, but sometimes it seems one-dimensional
Not often a player gets 2 doubles in one at bat
I thought the “foul” ball down the 1st base line was fair.

You're missed several defensive gems by Pedro (Alvarez)
And he homered. And he walked. And he was INTENTIONALLY walked.
I’ve got two possible theories about this. Once has to do with him rejecting winter ball and the beneficial effects of this decision.
The other one involves space aliens, but, shush! Keep it between you, me and everyone else on the thread…

Well, while yunz have been enjoying the events in AZ,
Smitty, Adam and I have been working ever so hard on the next Rumbunter Podcast™, and I can tell you – on good authority – that’s it ain’t carved in stone that Pedro is not playing any winter ball.
That’s all I can say at this point.

Perhaps not, but remember
under the CBA, management can ask, but not mandate, that a player play in Winter Ball

I’d bring him back and hope he can keep it together for the first half of the season and then deal him.
They unfortunate part is
they have to sign him for 2 years to do that, or cut him and watch him walk
What does that mean?!
by Trogluddite on Sep 20, 2011 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Honestly I think the pirates will offer arb. If he rejects it and we get comp, at worse he accepts it and you are gonna have a pretty reasonable salary thanks to his injury history.
Can we do that?
The Pirates have already determined what they’ll pay him for the next two years by having the options on his contract. So they have to exercise those options or cut him loose. I’m not sure they can then offer him arbitration.
What does that mean?!

http://www.piratesprospects.com/2011/08/which-free-agents-could-get-draft-compensation.html
P2 says we can do that
Yeah, I'm coming to that point as well
According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article IV(F)(1), teams may always ask for arbitration, although the players don’t have to agree (if they have enough service time).

When he's healthy, there really aren't a lot of better options available out there
"Pitch me outside, I will hit .400. Pitch me inside, and you will not find the ball." - Roberto Clemente
Yeah but with sanchez struggling, you are gonna have a black hole at catcher if Doumit leaves. Who was that no name catcher we got off waivers to look at, you don’t do that unless you have no good options in AAA
A comeback year for sanchez would do so much for the franchise
I went from anti-Doumit a few weeks ago to very pro-Doumit. Sure his health is risk, but locking down the number 2 position and adding a big bat to the lineup is so much for the team next year
and his injury this season was not the "injury prone" kind

Blomquist and Hill tonight leading off just boggles the mind how they can have the record they have. Juston Upton i guess is good enough to hit 3 run solo shots.
Bloomquist is hitting .264…which puts him ahead of all but Presley, Walker and Doumit in our lineup.
Come on, you know better than that!
He has an OBP of .321 and has never had an OPS of .680 or above except for his rookie season which is a 33 AB sample size. His career WAR is 1.2 after 10 SEASONS and he is leading off for a playoff team. That’s mind boggling.

we didn’t learn from LaRoche the elder, or Lyle Overpaid.
If we have a right handed bat...
to play at 1B vs LHP…I could live with Jones at 1B vs RHP.
Why do you say 90?
He will have 110+ this year and in the past four years has 148, 141, 155 and 150.
I'm guessing...
because 90 games gets him real close to the trade deadline.
