Pretty nice season from Morton

I feel like he made a lot of progress, and still has a lot he can improve on, especially since he relatively recently switched to his new motion.

Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?

Considering...

that Morton had a career 5.98 ERA going into the season…it would have been tough to not make progress and remain in the rotation.

Laid out to make a catch

that kept the ball from going into the RF corner. Very nice play.

Just saw in on Gameday… beautiful… Hope they put up a video of Pedro’s stop, too.

Was it one of those t-ball home runs

were you either bunt or softly hit groundball and the defense throws it around all over the place, because can Ciriaco hit it out of the infield?

Just saw the Pedro HR...

What a sweet swing. What a beautiful swing. That’s what we signed him for, and it’s a far cry from those half-hearted whiffs in the dirt we saw before. And he’s taking walks now? Winter ball, who needs it?

by rennais94 on Sep 20, 2011 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

good old Pedro

Look at one right down the chute and swing at one in the dirt.

by BlindSquirrel on Sep 20, 2011 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

I gotta feeling the “buzz” around the NL was to throw Pedro a first pitch fastball down the middle cause he won’t swing at it. Hopefully he keeps making ’em pay for a while.

But Jones had a spectacular diving catch to end the 1st, otherwise the Dbacks had some runs. Pedro had a great defensive play, too, though I think no one was on at the time.

You're missed several defensive gems by Pedro (Alvarez)

And he homered. And he walked. And he was INTENTIONALLY walked.

I’ve got two possible theories about this. Once has to do with him rejecting winter ball and the beneficial effects of this decision.

The other one involves space aliens, but, shush! Keep it between you, me and everyone else on the thread…

they have to sign him for 2 years to do that, or cut him and watch him walk

can’t they buy out then offer arb?

by Yung-Han on Sep 20, 2011 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

They could redo his deal, but if he is hitting and healthy his deal is reasonable for a productive catcher.

by Brakeman8 on Sep 20, 2011 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly I think the pirates will offer arb. If he rejects it and we get comp, at worse he accepts it and you are gonna have a pretty reasonable salary thanks to his injury history.

by Yung-Han on Sep 20, 2011 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Can we do that?

The Pirates have already determined what they’ll pay him for the next two years by having the options on his contract. So they have to exercise those options or cut him loose. I’m not sure they can then offer him arbitration.

What does that mean?!

by Trogluddite on Sep 20, 2011 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

I think they can decline the option and offer arb instead.

by Brakeman8 on Sep 20, 2011 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm coming to that point as well

According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article IV(F)(1), teams may always ask for arbitration, although the players don’t have to agree (if they have enough service time).

I went from anti-Doumit a few weeks ago to very pro-Doumit. Sure his health is risk, but locking down the number 2 position and adding a big bat to the lineup is so much for the team next year

seriously

on a better hitting team, maybe he’s not worth it.

on this team, we need Derrek.

Does the umpire not see Montero pull the ball into the strike zone or what?

by Yung-Han on Sep 21, 2011 12:37 AM EDT reply actions

some catchers are pretty good at that and disguise it well; like McKenry

Just think

A full year of Presley
A healthy Tabata
Cutch
D.Lee a big 1 year deal
Alvarez even at say .255 and 25 HR
Doumit healthy and playing 4 days a week
Walker
And a SS that can produce more than Ronny C and Jack Flash have.

Not bad at all…..

by Brakeman8 on Sep 21, 2011 12:45 AM EDT reply actions

Dunno

It’s not Ronny C, or D’Arnaud, or Ciriaco, or J Rod, or a return of Jack Flash.

yea; throw Jose Reyes in there and we might have somethin

It's like...

we didn’t learn from LaRoche the elder, or Lyle Overpaid.

by Thunder on Sep 21, 2011 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

would you rather stick with Jones?

by Brakeman8 on Sep 21, 2011 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

If we have a right handed bat...

to play at 1B vs LHP…I could live with Jones at 1B vs RHP.

by Thunder on Sep 21, 2011 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Jones at best a spot starter at 1st base. even overbay was better at turning the 3-6-3 double play

by Yung-Han on Sep 21, 2011 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

But Overbay couldn’t hit.

by Brakeman8 on Sep 21, 2011 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Why do you say 90?

He will have 110+ this year and in the past four years has 148, 141, 155 and 150.

by Brakeman8 on Sep 21, 2011 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm guessing...

because 90 games gets him real close to the trade deadline.

by Thunder on Sep 21, 2011 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Then you aren’t paying him 8 mill. More like 6 and getting something back in return.

by Brakeman8 on Sep 21, 2011 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm just worried,

that’s all.

He’s getting older, and more injury-prone.

Free your ass and your mind will follow.

by cocktailsfor2 on Sep 21, 2011 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. I don’t bring him back at all. And we aren’t very sure that he wants to come back anyway.

by Thunder on Sep 21, 2011 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

This, mostly.

IMO (and I mentioned this on the last podcast) – he’ll want to finish his career

[a] Somewhere warm,

[b] somewhere where there’s no state income tax (FLA, TEX).

3 somewhere he can win.

by cocktailsfor2 on Sep 21, 2011 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

yea; if they can get him on the cheap; go for it

I don’t see that many teams looking for older 1Bs next year, so the Bucs might have a shot. That’s assuming Lee wants to play next year.

Well, my prediction of a 3-0 win

and the Morton no-hitter before the game was completely wrong, but a win is a win. 7-12 in September, with seven more games to go. Tomorrow’s tilt is in the afternoon, I believe.
