On This Date.......

in 1940, Debs Garms clinches the batting title with five hits against the Reds. More Pirates have won batting titles than any other National League team.

For the kids out there...

Debs Garms was named after Eugene V. Debs, perennial Socialist Party candidate for President in the early 20th century.

We're seriously starting Pagnozzi?

/sigh

Yep...

the front office has to “take a look” at him. Evidently, our scouts didn’t get a good enough look at him as a part time catcher in AA and AAA the last 5 seasons.

And this game kinda sucks.

If Overbay does something here, I might just turn it off.

For being such a cerebral guy, Ohlendorf sure can’t hold runners.

Matt Pagnozzi

Might set the record for stolen bases allowed in an inning!

by pittbluedevil on Sep 21, 2011 4:04 PM EDT reply actions

Eh.

None of these have really been his fault, so far. On the first double steal, he would’ve had Bloomquist at third if Wood didn’t have a spring in his glove. On the second one, the bases were as good as stolen become Ohlendorf even threw the pitch.

Two double steals in one inning though. That’s beyond terrible for everybody involved

Just left Wrigley.

Wore my Cutch Nike tee, which was fun. Gotta love getting abuse from both Cubs and Brewers fans. Man, Packers tee shirts outside Wrigley make Browns shirts in the Burgh look polite.

afternoon. Last minute decision when I learned it was season finale. On the train to OHare now. I’ll give you a shout next year. I usually get to town every summer.

I continue to see why....

…people don’t want the Pirates to even attempt to bring Lee back next year.

by Brakeman8 on Sep 21, 2011 6:10 PM EDT reply actions

The more important question...

is whether Lee wants to come back. If he doesn’t, what the Pirates want is irrelevant.

by Thunder on Sep 21, 2011 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

NH pretty much intimated he didn’t on cocktails’ podcast.

If they end up signing Lee, the way it’ll have to work is he waits out the market and finds he can only get the deal he wants in Pgh. That’s the only way the Pirates will ever sign a quality FA (if you consider Lee one, which is a separate point) until after they become a contender. Which is why the annual ritual of arguing they should go after this or that first tier FA is so tiresome.

XP’s pinch-hit OPS is worse than the Pirates’ pitchers’ collective OPS.
