Old Cy Young Shuts Out Pirates
One hundred years ago today, pitcher Denton True "Cy" Young earned the 511th and final win of his storied career, pitching a complete game shutout against Babe Adams in a 1-0 Boston victory. Given the current trends in pitcher usage, it seems unlikely that his career wins record will ever be broken.
The link goes to the NYT's recap and box score for the game.

Cy's record is safe,
and it will take some time just to see the next pitcher with 300 wins. Babe Adams was a terrific pitcher, winning three games in the 1909 Fall Classic, but he’s one of several excellent pitchers for the Bucs who just falls short of Cooperstown.
Pirates wore a blue cap with a white "P"
during this time period. The “PBC” was added to the left sleeve later in the the 1900s.
Even at ~140 years old, Cy Young may still be able to shut out the Pirates, Sept 2011 edition.

Ya think? Once again, the NYT shows their brilliance.

Actually, I wrote that. The only content from the NYT is the original game recap and box score from 1911 at the link.
The above made me laugh.
The original NYT box and recap is a fantastic insight into the past. Wagner at 1st base? Clarke must have been giving him some late season respite. Clarke was player manger at this time, right?

I bet it was just a way to low ball his contract for 1912.

Sorry.
Should have figured it out with the lack of quotes and credit. Nothing personal on the snark either.
Actually, I think at some point we’ll have fifth-inning specialists. Guys who come in just to get the win, then turn it over to the late inning relievers. In 2024 Stetson Allie will be doing this for the Yankees. He’ll go 83-4 and get paid $34M in 2011 dollars.
