Reds Vs. Pirates, 23 September 2011
Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates, Sep 23, 2011 7:05 PM EDT
If you happen to be going to the game, be sure to say hi to this guy.
Epic sports weekend activated: Pirates game tonight in Pittsburgh, LSU/WV game tomorrow in Morgantown, Saints/Texans in Nola on Sun. YEEHAW!
That's some dedication to sports, folks. If I weren't a Pirates fan, and I were going to the biggest game in Morgantown in about 90 years on Saturday and an NFL game halfway across the country on Sunday, I'm not sure I'd make a Pirates game a priority.

On This Date.........
in 1951, pitcher Murray Dickson wins his 20th game, 3-0 over the Reds. Dickson accounted for nearly a third of the Pirates 64 wins that season.
If I was already flying into Houston to go to a game in Red Stick (Baton Rouge) the day before an LSU game I’d go see a ‘Stros game just for the heck of it too. Not that Minute Maid has as much appeal as PNC, I’m there and already shelling out a lot of money I might as well see the sites.
That's gonna be quite the overnight Saturday night...
Trying to get from Morgantown at midnight on Saturday night…to the Superdome at noon on Sunday. Unless he’s got his own plane.
WVU v. Miami
in 1993 was the biggest game, although in hindsight if WVU wins this game and continues on to an undefeated season this will probably surpass it…
What the heck do I care..? I’m PUMPED!

Epic fail by Charlie and McCutchisthetruth
The biggest game in WVu history was the game they lost 13-9. All they had to was beat my 28.5 point underdog Panthers and they would have had a shot at the MNC.
It was the 100th Backyard Brawl against their most played, and hated, rival with EVERYTHING on the line.
Let me say again that my Panthers won 13-9 with a kid at QB, Pat Bostik, who decided to forgo his final year as a player so he could become our play-by-play announcer.
13-9!!!!!!!
It doesn’t cost a thing to believe and the payoff on a winner is huge!
Jack Wilson
Was he pursued by the Pirates back in August before Braves got him? Sure would be better than CedANO>

Just want to say
Doumit has been on an absolute TEAR since his return. I know you guys don’t put too much stock in straight average, but he has brought it up something like 60 points in a bit less than a month and a half. And I’d wager that his OPS, for you more statistically inclined, is astronomical. Doumit, when healthy, can flat-out hit. And boy do I want to see him in a bucs uniform next year.
I don't think there's many
who really disagree with wanting him back…. just not for 2 years, or at that price.

I'd say $16 million for two years is reasonable
IF he stays healthy. I depends if you’re willing to take a gamble.
Just watched the replay of Jones' bash.
Holy shit.
And Volquez knew it.

It should have been a double play.

I live about a mile from the airport.
I could leave now, drop him off in town and be back by the 8th inning.

So who would you fire from the coaching staff on Thursday?
My first choice would be Gregg Ritchie.

Not fire, reassign
Likely has much useful knowledge, no sense giving that up. But let someone else handle the 1-1 technique adjustments.

Fair enough.
But really, this team’s offense has been so bad that there’s no reason he should keep his current job.

4th largest attendance ever?
Man, that’s pathetic.
I once heard that Connie Mack said he’d rather have a hot start and then miss the World Series than to start out badly and then comeback and go to the World Series because if you start out hot, you’ll get more people in the stands.

Not pitching Meek in close games?
I thought that evaluating Meek was one of the “September goals”. Seems they are not putting him in high pressure situations.

Why bother?
Ease him back in and let him get ready for next season.

Gameday had ball 1 right in the middle of the strike zone. Like dead center.

Yep.
I was surprised to see after Doumit got the ball that it was 1-0 count. I wondered what was wrong with that pitch.

Hammer Time.
I hope this Hammer time is better than the last time they faced the Reds and they scored a couple runs off Hammer to take the lead and win the game. I was there and it sucked awful.

Votto and Bruce coming up with two on in a one run game.
Greaaaaaat

Most unfortunate thing now is that Locke can't get his first win
Kid pitched a good game
Um, he couldn't anyways.
He was out after 4.2 innings. Not eligible for it.

This is why I hate September Ball in the NL…pitch hitter/loogy madness…its every manager’s wet dream and it postpones the game by 30-40 mins
Guess...
Hurdle didn’t want my call to verify.
I got it ready when JJ doubled.
But I don’t click it until the final out/run is recorded.

SEE, MEANINGLESS SEPTEMBER BALL ISN’T ALL BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just to show you how meaningless wins are for relievers...
Hanrahan gets his first win of the season on this one.
Hahahaha.
So well earned.
He should give that win to Jaramillo.

Right spot in the order on my call...
just didn’t have Ludwick PH for Pedro.
They gotta go 5-0 to match their 2003 record.
Gotta go 3-2 to avoid 90 losses and have the 2nd best team in PNC Park history.
This the first time since 2004 that the Pirates won 70 games.

Impressed by the
size of the crowd tonight, the Bucs managed to draw roughly 6,000 more fans than Tampa Bay. This despite the fact Tampa is fighting for a playoff berth.
Five more games left, so good to see the club is still battling for wins.
That's really too bad for Tampa.
I can’t imagine the Pirates having less than 35,000 if they were in 1st or 2nd place trying to get a playoff spot.

When the Pirates do contend
in September, the atmosphere at PNC Park and the City of Pittsburgh will be unbelievable. I think we had a small sampling in July about the enthusiasm surrounding the team, and that should be multiplied many times in September.
Off topic here, but I just noticed Jack Wilson playing shortstop for the Braves on ESPN. Atlanta
looks to be closing in on the wildcard, so I’m glad to see Wilson get a shot in the playoffs after all these years.
