On This Date........

in 1973, leftfielder Willie Stargell robs Ken Singleton of a homer in the fifth, homers himself in the sixth, and throws out Tony Scott at home in the seventh inning of a 3-0 defeat of the Expos in the second game of a doubleheader at Montreal. Tom Walker(Neil’s father), pitched the last couple innings for the Expos in this game.

BTW, everybody should check out the Rumbunter article in the sidebar featured on Yahoo Sports

Funny stuff, and sums up the season really well too. Sums up our collapse, while not ignoring the huge step forward made this year and the potential this team has to break out big soon.

That's an incomplete version...

don’t know why they put it up yet.

Yeah, it's good.

We went through and cleaned it up a bit…

I’ll post a link somewhere when it’s up.

Neither has much of anyone else the last 2 months.

by Thunder on Sep 24, 2011 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

So, since you're the only one here....

how did we not score w/2 on and one out?

What does that mean?!

by Trogluddite on Sep 24, 2011 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Rhetorical question... right?

Free your ass and your mind will follow.

by cocktailsfor2 on Sep 24, 2011 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really,

I’m guessing GIDP or 2 straight strikeouts.

What does that mean?!

by Trogluddite on Sep 24, 2011 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

The same way we don’t score most of the time…strikeouts.

by Thunder on Sep 24, 2011 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully not the way we do it

w/men on 2nd and 3rd and none out.

What does that mean?!

by Trogluddite on Sep 24, 2011 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

At least they are getting creative in not scoring.

by Thunder on Sep 24, 2011 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

You assbag, JJ

It doesn’t help that the Bucs can’t hit, you can’t run into outs like that…

by NastyNate82 on Sep 24, 2011 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

Pirates closing in on the record for baserunning blunders in a season, set by themselves in each of the last five seasons.

One more rhetorical question

before I start some work – why is JJ playing rather than the Fort? Doo we really expect Jaramillo to be our back up catcher next year?

What does that mean?!

by Trogluddite on Sep 24, 2011 7:48 PM EDT reply actions

If we don't exercise Doumit's option, we have McKenry and Jaramillo

Jaramillo has really impressed with the bat in a SSS. We need to test the waters with him to make a decision about Doumit

by rennais94 on Sep 24, 2011 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah,

actually thought about that after typing the question.

What does that mean?!

by Trogluddite on Sep 24, 2011 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Lincoln...

is at least consistent. Four hits, four doubles.

by Thunder on Sep 24, 2011 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

I'd like to stay and converse with you fine gentlemen

regarding the nuances of baseball, and, in particular, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 2011 version of it, as it is always scintillating (at worst) or transcendent (at best); however, I have 2 tickets to see OMD tonight, and I’m about to go use them.

Ciao.

I'd actually take

The Bucs season this year over the Reds. With all of their young players, they really looked like they could be a force in the division for the next couple of years. This has got to be really disappointing for them. I kept waiting for them to snap out of their funk, but it never really happened…

by NastyNate82 on Sep 24, 2011 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

At the start of the season

I thought they’d win about 70 games, I just didn’t know what a rollercoaster it was gonna be.

by 2013Pirates on Sep 24, 2011 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

If they win three games tonight and through the end of the season, that's 73

which is a 16 game improvement… and you gotta remember that we had about a month and half HORRIBLE stretch, which is only offset by a month and a half slightly-better-than-average stretch. Up to you to decide which one was the anomaly…

by rennais94 on Sep 24, 2011 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

73 wins is the 2nd best season at pnc park, id call it an improvement over anything we’ve seen the past few years

Thats what she said! - Michael Gary Scott

by C Shint on Sep 24, 2011 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

I’m looking at this from what the Reds were looking at coming into the season. Thanks to stuff like Dusty’s obsession with vets, I think that kind of sunk them. In addition to having a pretty inconsistent pitching staff other than Cueto.

by NastyNate82 on Sep 24, 2011 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

True

For a mid-market team that has cellar-dwelled for a while, they were a good story coming into this year. In any other division I’d be pretty disappointed

by rennais94 on Sep 24, 2011 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I still think

They can rebound…sounds like Jocketty and Dusty are at a pretty big disagreement in regards to how to play things going forward. If their pitching rebounds, I think they can be back up there next year. Votto and Bruce are forces in the middle of the lineup, along with Philips and I think they’ve got some good young guys coming up…gotta figure out what to do with Alonso too.

Big game for Jay-Hay tonight

Hopefully he’ll get the chance next year to show he’s legit

by rennais94 on Sep 24, 2011 9:20 PM EDT reply actions

Hopefully still one more chance for Harrison to make history, nojinx

inside-the-parker would be beautiful… 5-5 would even be noteworthy. Nojinx.
