On This Date.......

in 1970, Pittsburgh beats the Mets, 4-3, at Three Rivers Stadium. Matty Alou’s two-out single put the Bucs in front in the seventh and Willie Stargell’s RBI single gave the Pirates a two-run margin going to the ninth. The Mets scored in the ninth and Tommy Agee was at second with one out. Joe Gibbon fanned Art Shamsky and Agree was thrown out by Sanguillen as he tried to steal third to end the game.

Hey Guys

I haven’t been on many game threads this year. We had a second kid and going from 1 to 2 is a major life changer. I compensated by getting MLB package and actually watching the games for the first time.

I just wanted to say I still come by this place daily and check out most game threads at work the next day.

It was a good 4 month run and I am looking forward to next season. I hope to be in on more threads.

Yep.

My best friend/cousin had a second child on opening day this year. He already had a two year old. When I go over to his house, I have a hard time paying attention to anything that we put on TV until the oldest goes to bed.

They just haven't been very good at defense.

That Super Bowl win looks a lot like the Giants World Series win last year. Just a sort of fluke win….

I think they might.

I dunno. This could end up being a really high scoring game. Especially if Houston could start scoring TD’s instead of FG’s. But otherwise, New Orleans will probably score here and make it 16-14 going in to the half, when they could be down 28-14.

It's kind of weird we're getting Houston and New Orleans here in Iowa.

I believe...

the Houston-New Orleans game is the “national” game for those outside of local teams markets. That or the Jets-Raiders game. You can usually tell by the announce teams.

Gumbel and Dierdorf.

In fact, he hasn’t too well all year. Which is disappointing. His Ks are down and his BBs are up and his HR ratio has more than normalized. :/

Take kicking out of football entirely. I’d probably watch more football that way.

by Schide on Sep 25, 2011 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

So um, take the "foot" part out of football?

Or maybe stop calling it Football and start just calling it “Gridiron”. Let soccer have football.

by IAPiratesFan on Sep 25, 2011 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Basically

It sure as hell wouldn’t make anybody stop watching. Then we wouldn’t have to sit through commercials-kickoff return-more commercials sequences every game.

Of course they’d just tack on the commercials elsewhere, but it might not be as glaring.

by Schide on Sep 25, 2011 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Been a while since I have posted as I’ve been real busy with work and haven’t had a whole lot of free time. I’ve tried to keep up on the games as the season has winded down. What is everyone’s thoughts on bringing back Lee next season? I am definitely impressed with his play coming down the stretch. I would love to see him back for one more season. If he falls apart, give him the Overbay treatment, just hope it doesn’t take as long to pull the trigger.

by pskell02 on Sep 25, 2011 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

The operative question...

is whether Lee wants to come back. I’ve seen nothing indicating he does. He wasn’t happy about being traded in the first place.

by Thunder on Sep 25, 2011 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Pittsburgh is his best option

What teams are in the market for a 1st baseman?

by bmcferren on Sep 25, 2011 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Very true

Should have mentioned that in my post. If he is willing to come back, I see no reason not to give him $8-10M. Especially if you can guarantee that if the team isn’t in contention, and he is playing well, that he will be traded to a contender.

by pskell02 on Sep 25, 2011 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Buckeyes won yesterday, and a Buccos sweep against the Reds and my Cinci roommates would cap off a nice weekend, most of which I don’t remember.

It's okay.

I was here Friday night and it was pretty dead. Not really missing much.

Of course the 9th inning was pretty sucky. I have recorded yesterday’s game to watch this winter when I start to miss baseball.

Suck it, ZiPS

As you may recall, ZiPS had a specific projection for this game. I’m at the game, so I’m not gonna check, but iirc it was 6 ip, 6 k, 3 bb, 3 er, 1 HR. Depending on how you want to judge the 2 unearned runs, it was either way off, or remarkably close.

If Dan reads this, im just needling.
