2012 Pirates 40-man Roster predictions, Rule 5 and all that fun stuff

I don’t know about you guys, but trying to piece together who is likely to be on the Pirates 40-man roster next year and who needs to be protected is a pretty big puzzle.  So I thought I’d try my hand at bringing it together in one spot (though PiratesProspects does a fantastic job of tracking each player, (with WTM's amazing player pages!) and was one of my go-to sources for putting this together, in addition to Cot’s and thebaseballcube for verification and I used the Pirates website's player pages for the "official" position listing for each player – for instance, Garrett Jones is listed as a OF, Pedro Ciriaco a 3B.)  Naturally, there’s a lot of subjectivity to who stays and who goes, but I’ll give it a shot, position by position, here goes:

CATCHER:

Currently:  4 spots + 1 DL

2011: Doumit, Fryer, Jaramillo, McKenry, Snyder

Must be added or possibly lose: Dusty Brown, Jairo Marquez, Travis Scott, Wyatt Toregas, Kris Watts

Don’t worry about (not eligible for Rule 5 for another year): Ramon Cabrera, Dylan Child,  Elias Diaz, Samuel Gonzalez, Carlos Paulino, Tony Sanchez

2012 prediction:  Without the need to protect Tony Sanchez, this gives the Pirates even more flexibility.  I have a hunch the Pirates exercise Snyder’s option and let Doumit go for the 500k buyout:  (3 spots) Snyder, McKenry, Jaramillo

1ST BASE:

Currently:  2 spots

2011: Lee, Pearce

Must be added or possibly lose: Calvin Anderson, Jeff Clement, Miles Durham, Matt Hague

Don’t worry about (not eligible for Rule 5 for another year): none

2012 prediction:  Of course, two of the most of the intriguing guys are still a couple of years away from needing protection (Curry, Dickerson), and I think Pearce survives the knife, yet again, so this makes it pretty easy, though someone may take a chance on Anderson in the draft: (3 spots): FA 1B (Lee or whomever), Pearce, Hague

2ND BASE:

Currently:  1 spot

2011: Walker

Must be added or possibly lose: Greg Picart, Corey Wimberly

Don’t worry about (not eligible for Rule 5 for another year): Jarek Cunningham

2012 prediction:  Too easy: (1 spot): Walker

SHORTSTOP:

Currently:  3 spots

2011: Cedeno, d’Arnaud, Wood

Must be added or possibly lose: Brian Bocock, Brian Friday, Jordy MercerJosh RodriguezYunesky Sanchez

Don’t worry about (not eligible for Rule 5 for another year): Francisco Aponte, Jonathan Barrios, Jorge Bishop, Benjamin Gonzalez, Brock Holt, Gift Ngoepe

2012 prediction:  A couple of interesting decisions for the Pirates.  Exercise the Cedeno option? (I say "no" and go after a glove-guy; it’s time for a fresh start). Protect Friday or Mercer or both or neither?  Friday made it through the Rule 5 draft last year:  (4 spots): Cedeno (or FA SS), d’Arnaud, Wood, Mercer

THIRD BASE:

Currently:  3 spots

2011: Alvarez, Ciriaco, Harrison

Must be added or possibly lose: Eric Avila, Jeremy Farrell, Andy Marte, Andy Vasquez

Don’t worry about (not eligible for Rule 5 for another year): Elevys Gonzalez

2012 prediction:  I don’t think Ciriaco makes the cut again; Farrell and Avila probably don’t get any attention in the draft, though there is a risk of losing either (or both). What happens with the 25-man will be more interesting on this one than the 40-man, though if Alvarez is still a mess, an outsider would have to be brought in for the time being: (2 spots): Alvarez, Harrison

OUTFIELD:

Currently:  7 spots

2011: G. Hernandez, Jones, Ludwick, McCutchen, Paul, Presley, Tabata

Must be added or possibly lose:  Brad Chalk, Andrew Lambo, Quincy Latimore, Starling Marte, Rogelios Noris, Anthony NormanDavid Rubinstein, Cole White

Don’t worry about (not eligible for Rule 5 for another year): Exicardo Cayonez, Evan Chambers, Wesley Freeman, Robbie Grossman, Gavi Nivar, Junior Sosa

2012 prediction:  Wow!!  The first sort-of hard decisions come here – this is where the 25-man will battle the 40-man, present vs. future.  At least at first glance, but I don’t think it will be as hard it first seems.  Barring any strange trades, of course, McCutchen, Presley and Tabata are locks, with Jones about as close as you can get without being 100%:  Starling Marte  getting a spot is a complete no brainer.  So that leaves a pot of Gorkys, Ludwick’s spot (FA pick-up), Paul, Lambo and Latimore swirling around and pouring out for what amounts to roughly 2 or 3 spots.  I think Paul returns (or is replaced by a similar FA pick-up) and the Pirates protect Gorkys and Latimore (UPDATE: changed my mind on Latimore), allowing Lambo to be exposed, hoping that teams are scared off by his past problems and poor play.  I think Gorkys is given a chance to make the club out of spring training, but Marte will be taking up his spot in Indy.  If Hernandez fails to make the team, he may be released in order to pick-up another Paul-like FA.  Time is running out, Gorkys!!: (7spots): McCutchen, Presley, Tabata, Jones, Marte, G. Hernandez, Paul

PITCHERS:

Currently:  20 spots + 2 DL

2011: Burres, Correia, Grilli, Hanrahan, Hart, Jared Hughes, Karstens, Leroux, Lincoln, Locke, Mahlom, D. McCutchen, McDonald, McPherson, Meek, Morris, Morton, Moskos, Ohlendorf, Resop, Thompson, Veras, Watson

Must be added or possibly lose:  Tim Alderson, , Jose Ascanio, Jesus Brito, Fraylin Campos, Anthony Claggett, Michael Colla, Tyler Cox, Michael Crotta, Emmanuel De Leon, Michael Dubee , Nelson Figueroa, Zachary Foster, Sean Gallagher, Aaron Heilman, Steven Jackson, Noah Krol, Brian Leach, Mike Loree, Brett Lorin, Matt McSwain, Miguel Mendez,  Dan Meyer, Diego Moreno, Eliecer Navarro, Garrett Olson, Rudy Owens, Aaron Pribanic, Jhonatan Ramos, Brett Sinkbeil, Hunter Strickland, Justin Thomas,  Donnie Veal, Duke Welker, Justin Wilson, Tyler Yates,

Don’t worry about (not eligible for Rule 5 for another year): Nathan Baker,  Ryan Beckman, Victor Black, Jason Erickson, Zac Fuesser,  Jeff Inman, Phillip Irwin, Porfirio Lopez, Quinton Miller, Joan Montero, Rinku Singh, Trent Stevenson, Jarryd Sullivan

2012 prediction:  I thought this would be, by far, the most challenging, but I’m not so sure the Pirates have room to do a whole lot here, and they’re certainly likely to lose another Adcock-like pitcher or 2 in the draft (wait until Smizik sees that!!)  It’s weird, because guys that were probably shoo-ins a year or two ago to be added to the roster for this particular draft have fallen off the radar (i.e. Diego Moreno).  I actually think almost all of the current spots on the 40-man remain, though I am trimming it down to 18 spots.  There's a possibility the Pirates lose Pribanic or Lorin or both, but I take that chance.  I think Burres, Hart and Veras’s spots all go.  Maholm, gone as well.  I think that Daniel McCutchen and Daniel Moskos would have to knock off one of the spots that I’d hold for Grilli/Leroux/Resop (or any FA replacements that would be brought in to take over those spots.)  So, I see McCutchen and Moskos (imagine the headlines on that one!!) being let go.  I think Rudy Owens and Justin Wilson are given the other 2 spots.  Though, the Pirates could drop a catcher (likely Jaramillo as he's out of options), to carry another pitcher (Moskos or McCutchen).  So that leaves:  (20 spots): Correia, Grilli (or a FA), Hanrahan, Hughes, Karstens, Leroux (or a FA), Lincoln, Locke, McDonald, McPherson, Meek, Morris, Morton, Moskos, Ohlendorf, Owens, Resop (or a FA), Thompson, Watson, Wilson

So, all filtered down, my 2012 Pirates 40-man roster looks like this:

Pedro Alvarez

Ronny Cedeno (or FA SS)

Kevin Correia

Chase d’Arnaud

Jason Grilli (or a FA RP)

Matt Hague

Joel Hanrahan

Josh Harrison

Gorkys Hernandez

Jared Hughes

Jason Jaramillo

Garrett Jones

Jeff Karstens

Derrek Lee (or FA 1B)

Chris Leroux (or a FA RP)

Brad Lincoln

Jeff Locke

Starling Marte

Andrew McCutchen

James McDonald

Kyle McPherson

Evan Meek

Jordy Mercer

Michael McKenry

Bryan Morris

Charlie Morton

Rudy Owens

Xavier Paul

Steve Pearce

Alex Presley

Chris Resop (or a FA RP)

Chris Snyder (or a FA C)

Jose Tabata

Aaron Thompson

Neil Walker

Tony Watson

Justin Wilson

Brandon Wood

So there you have it!!  I’m sure I’ve misplaced a few guys here or there, but putting together a reasonable 40-man that allows for a solid 25-man, without exposing too many prospects, didn’t seem so bad….however, after NEXT year may be totally different story…haha!!

Please let me know what you think and any obvious guys that should/should not be there.

UPDATED: I updated the list to include Jared Hughes being added to the 40-man.  Also, I took Latimore and Fryer off of the 40-man and replaced them with Hughes and Moskos in my predicted 40-man.
