McCutchen has been hit by a pitch nine times this year, which is two more beanings than he got in his first year and a half in the majors. He said both left- and right-handed pitchers are coming inside against him more often.
"That's their game plan -- not necessarily to throw at me, but to come in for a purpose," McCutchen said. "I'm really starting to see it a lot more as the season goes on. And when they're missing in, they're hitting me."
Hurdle also calls out the Pirates' pitchers for not throwing inside:
"Over the past 10 days, Jose Tabata and Andrew McCutchen were nailed by inside pitches, a tone-setting strategy to cool off two of the Pirates' hottest hitters. Hurdle said the Pirates' pitchers have not responded by being more aggressive on the inner half of the plate.
"We have conversations about it that, unfortunately, fall on deaf ears," Hurdle said. "If you can't notice that your (teammates) are getting jack-knifed, shame on you. The coaching staff notices it. And, fortunately, I'm in a position to make notes about things that aren't getting done. Shame on the people that aren't getting it done."
Although, as Rob notes, Ohly did plunk Rami and Pena yesterday. Just not a good idea to do it back-to-back, IMO
Can't wait for Altoona's Pitcher of the Year Kyle McPherson to get up and change that!

He notes that Ohlendorf plunked two guys, but just looking at the numbers doesn’t really tell the story. The Ramirez one looked like it might have been intentional. The Pena one was a breaking ball that hit him in the foot.
Looked that way to me, too.
I just can’t believe how much of this shit they’re letting happen to Cutch.

Best revenge:
Put on the armor, take the hit, steal second, score the run.
I wouldn’t mind if that played out 100 times a year.
Why put THEIR guys on base too?
That would be fine,
if he did wear the protection.
…but he don’t.

Take it from the Top:
If there’s ever a question, take care of yourself.
Use your protection, be respecting yo’self.
Make no obligations, you can throw ‘em to the wind.
Blind infatuations, the means to an end.
Say baby I want ya, I’m hurtin’ so big

I don't understand this passive-aggressive "shame on them" bullshit from Hurdle
If you want somebody plunked, tell the pitcher to plunk him and if he doesn’t, pull him from the game. It’s his responsibility to make this inside baseball crap happen, he can’t be whining about it in the press.
agreed
but I also see a first-year manager getting a feel for who has a sack and who doesn’t.
As Thunder posted below, some people may find themselves on the outside-looking-in if they don’t cover their star players’ asses.

Reading between Hurdle's lines...
if you aren’t willing to pitch inside…you might have a tough time getting that rotation slot next year.
didn't someone throw behind a Cubs player on Fri. Sept. 2
the inning after McCutchen’s HBP forced him out of the game?
I have no idea if it happened...
I was not able to watch the game. But if it did occur, Burres was pitching.
