Seeding To Stars Website

I have seen at least 5 rankings of the top 100 prospects. I saw the following link on a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette blog: http://seedlingstostars.com/prospect-rankings/2012 Name any prospects overrated and underrated. The Pirates had only 4 prospects in the top 100. Here is the synapses on the 4 prospects.

Star-divide

# 9 - Jameson Taillon - there was a lot of talk toward the end of the season that scouts felt Taillon was underperforming his stuff. If those strikeout-to-walk numbers in full-season ball at age 19 are less than he’s capable of, then Taillon could be a true monster if he harnesses his stuff.

# 15 - Gerrit Cole - He’s a big righthander who touched 100 mph in the short stints in the AFL and should sit in the 94-96 range as a pro starter. His wide build suggests durability, and his mechanics strike a nice balance between funk and cleanliness.

# 61 Robbie Grossman - While he doesn’t get a lot of hype as a top 100 type of guy, Grossman is a bigtime sleeper who is quite polished and could be a well-above-average starting outfielder in the big leagues. He could be a bigtime top-of-the-order presence for future Pirates teams, adding to the organization’s enviable outfield talent.

# 72 Josh Bell - A lean, long-limbed outfielder, Bell has bigtime power potential from both sides of the plate. He could be a 35-45 HR hitter down the line.

Personally

I like Taillon ahead of Cole, and I think 9 and 15 are good spots for them.

Weird to see Grossman ahead of Bell as well as Marte, and it’s insane that Marte isn’t even on the list. Bell’s placement is solid in the 70’s.

On his list in general. I like Profar, but no way is he ahead of Harper and Moore. Having guys like Turner and Skaggs ahead of Miller is also odd in my opinion.

Okay

actually reading the write-up.

Taillon

His curveball is still inconsistent but has the look of a future plus offering, showing vicious two-plane break at times, and his changeup is advanced for a teenager as well.

He’s spot-on with the word vicious, but Taillon’s curveball is a plus-plus offering right now, not a “future plus offering.”

I like his write-up on Cole and Bell, especially pointing out Bell’s age, which concerns me. Grossman write-up is spot on as well.

I think his wording is justifiable, if he thinks Taillon needs more work on command of the curve (and that ML hitters won’t chase it when it’s out of the zone).

A list having the characteristics of junk, or a list written by a prospect junkie?

by Vlad on Jan 11, 2012 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

Or a "to-do" list

for a crack addict?

Ooh, good catch

I meant having the characteristics of junk, not by a junkie (well a prospect junkie at least)

My first impression

is that Profar, Rendon, Myers, Sanchez, Bogaerts, Gose (22? Really?), and Grossman are too high. On the other hand, Montero, Schoop and Cuthbert are too low. It’s also a joke that Marte isn’t on here and I can only assume that he considers Rizzo ineligible. If not, then he’s a huge omission too.

I’m a little surprised at the extent to which a lot of prospect rankers seem to be ranking Rendon as if he’s definitely healthy. At minorleagueball I cracked that I was concerned about his AFL stats, but no one got it.

Not actually affiliated with whygavs.

over time

I’ve realized that prospect rankers are more (or at least, as) concerned with a player’s current performance than their potential. Using current performance makes readers like their lists more (esp biased readers, which most of us are, to some extent), and therefore, more popular. There’s also a lot of shiny new toy syndrome tht goes on.

This is true in how Rendon and Bauer are getting ranked (and I liked Bauer a helluva lot, pre-draft), and also in the guys making the 70-100 region of the lists.

I tried making that same point

on a list that had Rendon in the 50’s. 5 teams passing makes me think he might not be totally healthy and he hasn’t played a single game yet to convince me otherwise. Until he does, he is not a top-10 guy.

by KentuckyPirate on Jan 11, 2012 8:41 AM EST up reply actions

per the link above

This site only discusses the ankle injury with respect to Rendon.

If I am not mistaken, he was also having additional injury problems…and as such was able to hit, yet not play the field. It is very possible that, had no other injuries popped up after the ankle, Rendon would have played in the AFL for the Pirates.

Ya the list was one word...

Turrible (pronounced how I spelled it.)

No Marte Makes no sense.

Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?
