Doug Slaten Signs Minor-League Deal
Slaten will provide lefty relief depth, which the Pirates -- who have a ton of good righty options, but not a lot of lefties -- can definitely use.

Good.
We needed another decent LHRP option for camp, and you can make a decent case for Slaten being outright better than Moskos.

You could also make the argument that herpes are more useful than Moskos. I would likely agree with both of those statements.
here's the rub
Braun doesn’t have much to do with Moskos (did they face each other last year?).
Maybe if he’d done more rubbing Braun wouldn’t be in this mess…
Oh yeah! I went there!

My primary fear here would be Hurdle using Slaten the way he did Beimel. Neither has any business ever facing RH hitters, and Beimel had been used strictly as a LOOGY in his better seasons, but Hurdle used Beimel as a 7th-inning guy instead of as a LOOGY. The result was an opponents’ OPS over 1.000 vs. RH batters.
Slaten has been strictly a LOOGY so far. He’s done decently when he’s been healthy (he seems prone to nagging knee, shoulder and elbow problems), but he allows an OPS 200 points higher vs. RH than LH batters. He’d be a useful guy to come in mid-game in a tight spot to pitch to lefties, or to force the other team to pull their LH pinch hitter.
Occupy MLB! Down with Seligula!
