Specifically he says Oswalt's asking price is $8MM and Hiroki Kuroda has come down to $10-$11MM.

Oswalt at $8MM is reaching the point where it seems to me Huntington should start sniffing around.

Raybin, I agree with you.

But would Oswalt really sign with the BUCS for that money?

by white angus on Jan 13, 2012 1:32 PM EST reply actions

Depends I suppose

If he’s looking to rebuild value, a 1 year/$8MM deal with the Bucs could help him if he’s looking to get $10-$12MM next year. Plus, he could be signed with the understanding he’ll be flipped to a contender at the deadline if the Bucs are out of contention. But if they are in it…hey, bonus!

Of course if a team in a better position to contend comes calling, the Bucs are hosed. But I think at this point it’s worth NH’s while to at least pick up the phone.

I was actually just going to post this

because I saw it at MLBTR. At $8M, Oswalt seems to be a more Bedard-ian risk, especially on a one year deal. I wanted no part of him at $15M-$16M as he was originally asking IIRC, but this could be a good move. If the Bucs could pull that off and sign Soler, I think it would make it a much more impressive offseason.

Having said that, it does come with the obvious caveat that the Pirates might not be able to sign him for what other teams can sign him for.

Time to make a splash...

I think it’s time for the Pirates to make a splash and sign E. Jackson. For years, I have said that the Pirates should avoid the free agent market and invest in L-T contract for players they control, but given Jackson’s reduction in cost, the Pirates low payroll, and the fact that the fans actually came out last year and lined the pockets the of Nutting (not to mention the fact that they can’t invest as much in the draft anymore) I think now is the time. Jackson is relatively young and could still be part of the rotation when Cole/Taillon are ready. Jackson is the type of pitcher NH likes. I’ve agreed with the reasons the Pirates haven’t made a splash in FA in the past, but times have changed. Now is the time.

Depends on the cost

While I agree that Jackson is a pitcher the Pirates can use, I wouldn’t break the bank for an average pitcher. Jackson may take $8 million to play in NY or Boston but the Pirates might have to spit up $13-15 million to convince him to don the black and gold. Seems that most people easily forget that for “prime” free agents to come to Pittsburgh, it’s probably going to take a ~%50 markup from a championship caliber team. No one wants to play for a loser and most of these guys were only 6, 7, 8 years old the last time the Pirates had a winning season. It’s a Catch-22 and a downward spiral but it’s likely the truth.

Quote from the linked ESPN article below

“Clubs that have checked in say the Astros are willing to pay half of Lee’s $18.5 million and “at least” $7 million of the $11 million Myers will earn this year."

Brett Myers for $4 million? What would it take prospect wise? If he’s healthy, as he’s been recently, he’s at least as good as Maholm, with more strikeouts. Maybe worth a phone call seeing as which Houston is moving to the AL…

Marte?

As in Starling? It might take an autographed photo of him to get Myers. His FB is down to 88 now. I’m not sure I’d take him over Correia.

hey, im just sayin what it would take

no way the Stros accept Rojas and Welker for him

by white angus on Jan 13, 2012 6:15 PM EST up reply actions

That’s more than I’d give for him.

I could be wrong, but I think all they’re going to get for Myers is some salary relief.

Per that report, they'd still be eating ~$7M of his salary

They’d really offer to eat that much if they just wanted salary relief?

by Superstar25 on Jan 14, 2012 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Myers has been pretty crappy two of the last three years. I doubt a team would want to pay more than $2-3M for him, so he’d still cost more than he’s worth at $4M. I guess the Astros would probably get something for him, but certainly not a top prospect. More like a couple middling relief prospects.

Where is Wandy?

I’d rather take him if they will eat a good bit of salary (maybe $10m and Correia?)

If we nudge the Astros a little higher...

maybe Carlos Lee is the Pirates 1B next season? If we could get it down to where we are only paying say $7-8M, he’d still be better at 1B than what we are looking at. You run into the same issues you would with Derrek Lee with respect to aging, but outside of the lousy 2010 season, his numbers are still pretty decent.

by Thunder on Jan 13, 2012 5:58 PM EST reply actions

I’d rather have him than Myers. PNC could be death valley for him, though.

I don't know...

Some of those moon shots Lee hits onto the train tracks above the Crawford Boxes look like they’d fly out of any stadium. He’ll be 36 in June, but he’s still walking, and he’s still not striking out. So, it looks like he’s still got something left.in the tank.

If he’s obtainable for half his $18.5M salary, plus a couple of less-tha-top-10 prospects, I can sure think of worse 1B options for the 2012 Pirates.

Lee really isnt a HR hitter any longer

its really odd. he has wonderful contact rates for a guy who looks bad just walking up to the plate.

by white angus on Jan 13, 2012 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

He doesn’t HAVE to be a HR hitter if he can produce the rest (non 2010) of his numbers.

by Thunder on Jan 14, 2012 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

oh i agree

im the first one to say this team doesnt need a HR hitter. this team needs a GOOD HITTER. which Lee can be. just not at his current cost.

by white angus on Jan 15, 2012 8:55 AM EST up reply actions

How fat would Carlos Lee get playing for a doormat team like the Pirates in a city where he could become beloved by being seen out at restaurants dining with fans? I say he hits the 6-sammiches-a-week diet.
