Come on, how often do we get 19 year olds putting up .900 OPS? Kids got a body built for power too.

FWIW
I really like Osuna and would have had him in my top-20 but I was stuck voting for Wilson and I would also put Curry ahead of him

I’m more intrigued by Harold Ramirez than Candon Myles at this point.

Elevys Gonzalez
is he the next Freddy Sanchez? actually he didnt even start in the minors until he was older than Elevys

Gonzalez
No, I don’t think Gonzalez is the next Sanchez. I don’t think he’s going to be able to play 2B, and his glove at 3B isn’t as good as Sanchez’s was. He has a similar power/speed profile (i.e. not very much of either), but he’s nowhere near the pure hitter Sanchez was. That BAbip is going to regress big time at Altoona and his mediocre strike zone command will get exposed. I don’t think Gonzalez is much of a prospect, personally.
Mel Rojas jr
i am looking for a breakout year from Rojas. i think this is the year he ‘matures’ and starts getting that ops over say .735. not spectacular but a start and evidence that his talent will start to really show.
Why you should vote for Candon Myles
It is all about speed. Hot, dirty, nasty, bad ass speed. Myles has it in spades.
He has the tools to remain in center field, and was a talented offensive player in high school. He only got in two games last year, but hit better than say Jared Lakind, so that is saying something.
He had 45 steals his senior year, and has the attitude that he can run on anyone.
And for good measure his summer league team beat Josh Bell. He is a talent with a ceiling higher than anyone else.

Myles
Why do you suppose he lasted to the 12th round and signed for only 125K if his upside is so high? Without thinking too hard about it, it seems like there are 15 or 20 guys still on the board with equal or better upside. What about Mel Rojas, for instance, who was certainly much more highly regarded coming out of the draft?
Two medicore years
I actually liked Rojas a lot, but he has had two pretty disappointing years. His strike outs are a problem and power is not what I hoped it would be. He really struggles from the right side of the plate. So much that continuing as a switch hitter worries me. His right side OPS was only .542. Some have worries that he will be able to stay in center, which I think reduces his value a bit since his power is suspect for a corner outfielder.
I would be interested in who you think has better upside. It is a little hard to compare pitcher as hitters, but I still don’t see that many with a better upside.
Curry and Hague are lacking power for 1B. Gorkys is a 4th outfielder. Osuna has already been moved to 1B because of his defense. Joely is a bit too wild, and Morris has had Tommy John surgery, was shut down the next season with shoulder pain, had toe surgery, and has really only had one good season. I really would be interested in your list.

upside
Sticking just to outfielders, how about:
Mel Rojas
Taylor Lewis
Wes Freeman
Willy Garcia
Gregory Polanco
Harold Ramirez
Elvis Escobar
I’m not sure what separates Myles from any of those guys. Take Rojas, for instance. He hasn’t performed well so far, but his upside is still the same: five-tool center-fielder. Or Taylor Lewis – speedy CF just like Myles, just as toolsy (maybe moreso; Lewis seems like he has more power potential). And then there’s Willy Garcia, who’s going to be an absolute monster if he can make his tools work. And I’m not sure there’s any less reason to think that Garcia can make his tools work than to think that Myles can.
glad you mentioned Garcia as i feel he has been overlooked… decent signing bonus and great tools . i mean if we’re judging on tools (Allie) he should be pretty high

Matt Hague had 52 XBHs in Indy, last year.
So, I’m not sure that “lacking power” tag is 100% accurate. His power is showing up now as more “gap power” than “over the wall power”, right now. But that’s not that uncommon, for inexperienced players. (Hague has 1739 minor league ABs, total. Not that many, in the grand scheme of things.)
Hague has shown very good plate disclipline throughout his rise through the Pirates system, which has been steady. Hague should make his Pirates debut sometime in 2012.
If Matt Hague doesn’t make it as one of the top 25 prospects on this board, then there’s something wrong. Because the Pirates system is improved, there’s no question of that. But it isn’t so strong, that there’s no room for a .300+ hitting, .800+ OPSing player in a defensive position that the Pirates need, in the top 25. And one ready to contribute at the MLB level, to boot.
Maybe we’re focusing a little too much on upside, and not enough on results.

i agree with most of this
i might have voted for Hague over almost everyone since the 19th spot… maybe Hanson above Hague, but the guy I’ve been voting for for a while (Osuna) isn’t getting selected :P
Hague's
XBH totals were the result of getting an assload of plate appearances last year and don’t really tell me that he actually has much “power.” Hague’s ISO last year in Indy was .148. Just for comparison, Josh Harrison’s was .150 and Jordy Mercer’s was .146. This is the kind of “power” that Hague showed last year which is not really what you’d want out of a corner infielder.
by KentuckyPirate on Jan 20, 2012 9:19 AM EST up reply actions
He also turns 27 this summer and bats and throws righty. If you are a 26/27-year-old R/R 1B with a career minor league ISO of .140 you are not a prospect.
Well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that.
Because I think Hague is a prospect, age be damned. And a better prospect, than you’re giving him credit for.
by Midnight Moose on Jan 20, 2012 6:41 PM EST up reply actions
Let's not forget
The Pirates are avoiding him like the plague. This is two straight years they have traded to get someone to stick in his way, and they didn’t even call him up last year in September.
I think he looks a lot like John Bowker, and Bowker was not a top 25 prospect.
by SojourningPirate on Jan 20, 2012 11:18 AM EST up reply actions
Sorry
that should read “signed” not “traded to get”.
by SojourningPirate on Jan 20, 2012 11:19 AM EST up reply actions
Hague wasn't on the 40 man roster last September.
So, giving him a September call-up would have meant a roster move. Besides which, DLee was already manning 1B in September.
September call-up in 2011 or not, Hague will be a Pirate at some point, this season.

kinda off topic
but i m really disappointed by Lakind’s start in the pros. I thought having him hit was the right decision (based on reports), but it’s not really worked out so far…
just going by raw talent and potential at this point
i would have to put Rojas next of course..then maybe Wes Freeman
