Community Prospect #24
Bryan Morris won poll 23 with 40% of the vote. The BD community is far more pessimistic about him than the major industry sources (Sickels had him at 13, Goldstein at 11). Matt Curry was the runner up with 20% of the vote. Here's the list:
1. Gerrit Cole
2. Jameson Taillon
3. Starling Marte
4. Josh Bell
5. Luis Heredia
6. Robbie Grossman
7. Tony Sanchez
8. Kyle McPherson
9. Stetson Allie
10. Nick Kingham
11. Rudy Owens
12. Jeff Locke
13. Jarek Cunningham
14. Alex Dickerson
15. Zack Von Rosenberg
16. Colton Cain
17. Jordy Mercer
18. Zack Dodson
19. Clayton Holmes
20. Alen Hanson
21. Yamaico Navarro
22. Justin Wilson
23. Bryan Morris
I'm leaving everyone on the list, including the five guys who didn't get any votes, and I'm leaving the poll open until Monday.

Prospects
Epoc, are you going to poll a 40 man roster.
Phil Irwin
I’m surprised Irwin’s not getting more love from the stats/floor contingent. He’s been a bit old for the levels, but he’s pitched well at every stop since coming into the organization. His career minor league ERA is just 3.11. He’s displayed excellent control, decent K rate, and he gets a lot of groundballs. Will some of the Wilson/Morris vote go to Irwin now?
Personally, I like Irwin, probably more than Wilson and almost as much as Morris. He’s got three average pitches and good command. I think he’s got a shot to be a #4/5 starter.
I like him as well...
I saw him with Altoona a couple of times and he displayed excellent command and pretty good secondary stuff. That being said, he never broke 88 on the gun, which is why he doesn’t get much attention.

I've always wondered why he didn't get talked about more
just based on his pitching well at every stop.
I wouldn’t call him a floor guy, though, even given my nebulous definition of floor which is “less time to bust.” By that standard the floor guy this round has to be Gorkys. Though after that, Irwin is closer than the upside guys like Os/zuna and, well, just about everyone else except the Matts and maybe Cabrera.

I'm
still kinda flabbergasted Curry has been picked yet. I know it sounds insane, but I think we are giving too much credit into a half-season struggle at AA. He has the bat speed, plate coverage, lack of holes, and approach to succeed. That was demonstrated to me watching him at WV and the stats more than backed it up. Just because he didn’t set the world on fire at AA in a fairly small ‘trial’ doesn’t change that fact, at least in my mind.
Already about 10 spots too low.

Agreed
personally, I’d have liked Wilson, Curry and Osuna to crack the top-20 at the expense of Mercer, Dodson and Hanson.

quite possible
Though from the perspective of a floor guy, he hasn’t hit well above low-A yet, so he still doesn’t count as that close.

Well...
It was 87 games and about 370 at bats or so, and he was really bad. Now, that doesn’t define him, but it certainly doesn’t help his cause. He was a college senior from a major program. Wouldn’t you expect him to rake in the Sally League?
And if he is a prospect, why isn’t Lambo, who outperformed him by a wide margin on the same team, and who is younger by a month?
Of course, I hope you are right and Curry takes off, but I am skeptical. I have Dickerson much higher.

agree
A 23-year-old all-bat prospect just has to hit better than .243/.318/.377 over 350 PA in AA to be considered any sort of prospect at all. And even though it’s still a pretty small sample, the 26% K rate (which stabilizes fairly quickly) is a huge red flag. Bear in mind that before his 200 awesome PA in the SAL he was just a sixteenth-round senior sign with mediocre scouting reports.
What do you suppose his problem was at AA? If he has good bat speed, good plate coverage, and no holes in his swing, why did he strike out 26% of the time against AA hitters? It’s true that it was a small sample, but K rate stabilizes really quickly (about 100 PA for major leaguers), and he struck out 1/4 of the time! In AA! Over 350 PA!
a couple of reasons
Irwin’s velocity is one. A second is that I learnt a bit from the Owens/Wilson/Morris trio, and how apparently AA is the big jump for hitters while AAA is the one for pitchers, so I’m waiting. As someone who doesn’t get to watch a lot of games and relies more on reports/numbers, there’s certainly some degree of randomness to my rankings— e.g. if Irwin has elite command/control/movement, then he can be v successful even at 89-90 mph, however since i dont know better, I’m going with the view that its hardfor a guy with that kind of velocity to succeed at the higher levels. That said, I’m certainly rooting for him!

Yeah, the velo is a concern, as is his age to some extent. I don’t think he can be any more than a 4/5, even with good command, and middle relief is a more likely destination. That said, he’s more likely to be an MLB starter than Wilson or Morris, although Morris will have a lot more value out of the ‘pen. I think he’s worth considering for Wilson fans.
I'm not necessarily pessimistic about Morris
But I’m pessimistic about relief prospects in general. Short of the next Mo Rivera (and even he wouldn’t be that valuable on a bad team that doesn’t win much), I really don’t see much value in a prospect whose ceiling is a reliever

Agree and Pessimistic
Relievers that are not closers just shouldn’t be high prospects. And I am pessimistic about Morris. Too many bad years to be optimistic.

Curry can not win.
Anyone voting for Curry please explain yourself.
Matt Curry is 9 months younger than Gorkys Hernandez. Gorkys posted an OPS 45 points higher at a level above. Gorkys has elite defensive value. Curry is a poor 1B by most accounts. Gorkys has very good speed. Curry has little speed or athleticism. Gorkys is a 2-time top 100 prospect. Curry was a 37th and 16th round draft pick.
Gorkys has ceiling, floor, pedigree, baserunning, defense, and offense. You can not honestly vote for Curry at this spot.
PS: Ditto Matt Hague except Hague is 2 years older than Hernandez and hit better this year.
I'll make you a deal, Mr E
Help me get Hague on the BD prospect list, and I’ll start voting for Gorkys. And I’ll keep voting for him, until we get him on there, too.

i think Gorkys keeps getting undervalued
because the Pirates have McCutchen… In many MLB orgs, he would be in the conversation for opening day CF.

I remember Gorkys once be described the best defense center fielder in the minor, isn’t he?
He's probably not
the best defensive CF in the all of the minors but he absolutely is elite defensively. He is, by most accounts, the best defensive outfielder in the Pirates organization and that puts him ahead of, not only Starling Marte, but Andrew McCutchen too.

Osuna
I’m convinced he won’t get on this list for another 3-4 spots at least based on the way the voting is going. I’m wondering if I should start to vote among the top 2-3 at this point, as a pseudo-runoff type vote, esp since epoc isnt leaving people off!
