Cue the
Nutting is too cheap to get 25 actual prospects, crowd.
The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.
Perspectives become reality.

Osuna
call it a bit of a projections becasue, well, that’s what it is. He has only played one season in the states and it was in the GCL. At the same time, he’s age appropriate, hit very well in Bradenton and (my personal favorite) hardly struck out at all as a power hitter. Obviously he’ll face some new challenges as he moves up the ladder but for right now, I think he’s interesting enough to make the list ahead of other guys we have left. Part of me considered going the safe route with Gorkys but I’m not sure he’ll hit well enough to start even with his defense. Osuna, at least at the moment, seems like he can hit well enough to be a starter at 1B.

Pretty much exactly the reasons I switch from Gorkys to Osuna
Well done
Jose Tabata is the truth
The following is a list of everything Darren McFadden is bad at: 1) Giving birth. End of list.
In some ways I feel that, though Ozuna or someone at his level is more likely to turn into a really useful part than Gorkys — who is probably not going to be a star or even a starter — I can’t say that any individual guy in the GCL (except Heredia and maybe Hanson) has a higher expected value than Gorkys. Ozuna might be one of the most likely candidates to step forward, but his expected value isn’t really higher than a guy who has a good shot at being a fourth or fifth outfielder right away.
I can see the case for weighting ceiling more heavily, because 4th/5th OFs just aren’t as valuable as what Ozuna could turn into, though.

It's
the ceiling vs. floor debate. I the two will be really close for me but I just like the idea of a guy who could be a top 10 organizational prospect next year if he repeats his numbers in SS ball.
by KentuckyPirate on Jan 24, 2012 8:22 AM EST up reply actions
If we’re doing the hypothetical “player repeats numbers a step above this year,” I’ll take the guy that would be a 3 WAR player RIGHT NOW.
OTOH, Ozuna is probably more likely to repeat his numbers just because of age — I’d expect a guy going from 18 to 19 to progress more than a guy going from 23 to 24.

This is my philosophy. But what I don’t understand is why the community seems to feel that Jordy Mercer has a decent chance to be a starter (and thus is a better prospect than higher upside guys like Osuna) but Gorkys doesn’t. Gorkys is 13 months younger, has much higher pedigree, hit better in AAA last year, is a better defender, and has more speed. He even has more raw power than Mercer, though his GB tendencies (vs. Mercer’s flyball tendencies) counteract that. I can understand going for higher upside, but I don’t understand why similarly low-upside guys are viewed so differently. You can make similar arguments about Gorkys vs. guys like Curry or Justin Wilson.
I just think
that’s one of the results of a group list like this. People don’t always use the same criteria from player to player (not trying to come off as a holier-than-thou prospect evaluator or anything as I’m sure I’ve done it too) so people overvalue Mercer’s “floor” while disregarding Gorkys’. I think people also might still hold a grudge of sorts against Gorkys because he was a top-100 guy when we got him and he’s essentially become an also-ran since then. Since he won’t be as good as we initially hoped he would, he automatically becomes a bust. FWIW, I totally agree with you that Gorkys is a better prospect than Mercer.

I'll cop to some irrationality here
in that I wasn’t really thinking about Gorkys in Mercer’s spot, partly because his lackluster showing when first acquired put him more in the back of my mind. OTOH I think it’s possible that Mercer might wind up with more defensive value than Gorkys; some think Mercer’s defense is excellent at SS, which is more valuable than CF defense, particularly in our system. I also think that when players are this close to the majors there’s some merit in looking to organizational need — Mercer seems more likely to contribute for us than Zygotic Mynci.
FWIW Sickels has Mercer ahead of Gorkys too.
I voted for Morris over Wilson and Gorkys over Curry so I plead innocent on that.

A little bit of a sidenote here
But I was looking at the rest of the GCL Pirates roster to get some perspective on Osuna’s numbers and noticed that Jonathan Schwind hit the ever-loving crap out of the ball after he signed. Now obviously, he was a 41st round pick for a reason and he’s a 21 year old playing in the GCL so that’s pretty much what you would expect out of him. Having said that, does anybody know if he is supposed to be good enough defensively that he could handle catcher in the long term (that is if he sticks around long enough to have a long term)? The age and the draft position keeps him outside the top-50 for me, and probably well outside. At the same time, if he is able to stick at catcher he could be worth keeping an eye on if he hits his way up through WV this season.
by KentuckyPirate on Jan 23, 2012 12:46 PM EST up reply actions
Yes
he’s a legitimate catching prospect. Great value so far for a 41st pick.

WV?
I don’t know much about Schwind although the way he hit was nice to see. But I don’t think he makes it to WV this year. Other catchers were taken in front of him like Derek Trent a lefty in Round 31 who played in State College last year. Maybe more importantly Samuel Gonzalez made the jump from the DSL to State College and hit pretty well at .302 and only 15 strike outs. It seems that those two guys are on tract to make WV behind the plate. Also Matthew Skirving played at State College and has already repeated that level so probably either needs to be moved up or released. I will be watching Schwind, but I am just not sure he is going to make WV this year.
by SojourningPirate on Jan 23, 2012 8:59 PM EST up reply actions
I'm not sure
Schwind will, make it up to WV this year but if he doesn’t, I don’t see any of the guys you mentioned as real roadblocks. Even Gonzalez, who hit well in SC, is old for the level just like Schwind and Schwind hit better. He won’t start in WV but if he goes to SC and hits, he’ll probably move up at some point this year.
