surprised Capuano got a 2 year deal for what i remember to be $12 mil, while Francis had to take a NRI. Seems like they’re similar pitchers, good deal by the reds
That’s what happens when you rush the market and try to make a splash early. Now that the music is getting ready to stop, a lot of pitchers are looking for chairs. I would have liked to have seen the Piarates get Francis on a minor league deal. He may not be much better, but probably wouldn’t be worse than Correia.

My thoughts exactly. Would have been a solid minor league signing, but name one thing Francis can do that Correia can’t. Correia has a better chance of bouncing back and being the decent pitcher that he used to be(not holding my breath though), where Francis has pretty much been Francis his entire career.
I’ll take Francis. He’s pitched in Colorado and the AL. I’d like to see what he can do in a pitcher’s park in a non-DH league. Correia has had the benefit of pitching in SF, SD and Pitt.
If he stays healthy, I believe Francis will have a better year than Correia, Karstens and maybe Maholm and Morton.
I'd take Francis all day over KC
Francis over the last two seasons (i.e., after major surgery) has pitched 287.1 innings and put up 4.6 fWAR.
Contrast that with Correia who over the course of his entire career (895 innings) has managed 4.7 fWAR in total.
One of the two is clearly the superior player and it isn’t Kevin Correia.

I don’t really agree with this part, not that it matters much. Francis was a pretty good talent until he tore up his shoulder. Now, though, he really can’t be trusted to perform.
There's still a few guys out there.
Including the 2 I was beating the drum for a ton last off-season (and, I turned out to be VERY wrong about) in Brandon Webb & Brad Penny. It’s unfortunate that a talent like Webb just can’t shake the injury bug and Penny looked pretty awful on a very good team last year. I don’t have the same interest in either this season.
But there are a few others.
Most are risks, of course, because they are coming off of injuries.
Speaking of, anyone have any news on how Chris Young is recovering??
That is certainly someone that I’d love to see the Pirates take a shot on and bring him back into the organization and could possible be had for a minor deal. Last thing I heard was that he wouldn’t quite be ready for the start of the season, but I didn’t know if anyone had any updates.

If there’s no news on Young, it’s generally safe to assume that he’s hurt again.
I don’t think Micah Owings has signed with anybody yet. He’d be reasonable rotation/pen depth, and everybody likes pitchers who can hit.
Probably worth doing due diligence on health for Jon Garland, Kenshin Kawakami, and John Maine, too.
Have Ben Sheets or Jeremy Bonderman officially retired? They both sat out 2011 and BBRef lists final games for both of them. I found an article from last year saying Bonderman wasn’t up for rehab and hinted at retiring, but news searches for Sheets lists comments he’d previously made (re: Fielder in Milwaukee years ago). They’re deeper sleepers, but they fit your "super cheap super risky " mold.
I always liked Kawakami, but pitchers who don’t succeed in Atlanta worry me.
