His bid wasn't one of the ones moving on to the second round. He doesn't think they're worth what they're expected to sell for. Apparently Cuban doesn't want to lose money on a baseball team. Imagine that . . . .

he wants to buy the buccos

so he can have a 100% stake. dodgers way to much, would have bring other investors. 325 million for the pirates is sofa change for mr. cuban

"please buy the team mr. cuban"

He showed interest in the Pirates

because he likes owning sports teams. It’s the same reason he has tried to buy the Dodgers and the Cubs (I feel like there are a couple more too). People seem to want to cling to the fact that he’s a “Pittsburgher” when they assume he’d be willing to light some of his money on fire to fund the Pirates. What get’s ignored is that this “Pittsburgher” moved out of the city in 1976 when he transferred out of Pitt after his freshman year. In fact, he’s lived in Dallas for the last 30 years. Regardless, the point remains that unless you are this guy and you essentially own all of the oil in the middle east, you aren’t going to fund a pro sports team with your own personal piggy bank.

First off, let's dispel this notion that Cuban turned in his Pirates fan card, when he left Pittsburgh.

I personally know Pirates fans who have never been to Pittsburgh. Never seen PNC Park. They’re Pirates fans, because their fathers, who left Pittsburgh in the ’70s for better work, were Pirates fans. And their fanhood was handed down, from father to son. Because those fathers never lost their Pirates fanhood.

And just because those sons of Pirates fans never been to Pittsburgh, most definitely does not make them any less Pirates fans, than you or I.

Secondly, the reason it’s always been a pipedream of mine for Cuban to buy the Pirates, is not because I think he’d throw his own money at the team, like some drunken sailor. He’d still run the Pirates as a self-financing entity. But, he’d also work like a dog to promote the Pirates, and try to maximize the team revenues. By both increasing attendance, and bringing in additional corporate advertising/sponsorship.

And then use those additional revenues to bolster the team. It would be the same circle as it is now – revenues generated going back into the team. It would just be a bigger circle.

I’m not one of those “yinzers” running around, going “Nuting is cheap, sale the team!!” But one thing that does hurt the Pirates is having a principal owner who is happier, the further he is from the public spotlight.

It’s my opinion that the Pirates would benefit from having a more visible owner, who wasn’t afraid to get down and dirty, promoting the team. Ron Burkle can get away with being reclusive, because his partner is a Pittsburgh icon. But that reclusive style isn’t working, for the Pirates. And won’t work, whether a Nutting is the principal owner, or anyone else uncomfortable in the public spotlight.

I wasn't trying to suggest

that Cuban “turned in his fan card” or anything like that. Only that people seem to believe that because he was born in Pittsburgh, he would run the team like a fan as opposed to a business man. While it’s true that Cuban probably was (and possibly still is) a Pirates fan, the overwhelming majority of owners purchased a different team than the one they grew up watching. Put another way, Cuban made his money by selling off companies that he built from the ground up, companies that I’m sure he had quite the personal investment in. He was able to separate his personal attachments from him business sense and it enabled him to turn a pretty profit. If Cuban did buy the team, I see no reason to believe he would run it like a fan trying to save his favorite team as opposed to a business man trying to run a financially successful organization.

Nor I.

I just admire what Cuban did for the Mavs. He had the AA center rocking, before the Mavs got good. If there’s one thing Cuban would do for the Pirates, it would be putting butts in PNC Park seats. He’s a shameless promoter. There’s a bit of Bill Veeck in him.

I know this – if Cuban ever did buy the Pirates, no one could blame the fans, if the team didn’t improve. Because PNC Park would be electric. Cuban would make damn sure of that.

by Midnight Moose on Jan 28, 2012 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

for the record, the Mavs did very well before Cuban even got rich

The first Roy Tarpley era was successful and then the Three J’s got the Mavs fans hopping. Cuban’s best attribute is that hes “one of the guys” and spoils his players with top of the line everything.

Cuban has stated in the past that he is a Pirates fan. Hes also said that hes somewhat embarrased by that, which was on the Bill Maher HBO show.
He did want to buy the Pirates AND any other baseball team. But even he wont overpay for it.

But they were pretty terrible in NBA Jam, which are my earliest memories of them

by Mr. E on Jan 29, 2012 1:17 AM EST up reply actions

Well, it really wouldn't matter if Cuban would overpay

For the Pirates, or not. Since the Nuttings aren’t selling. Like I said it’s just a pipedream of mine. Nothing more.

The bottom line is, whether you like the Nuttings, hate them, or are indifferent towards them, based on all appearance, we’re stuck with them, for the foreseeable future.

by Midnight Moose on Jan 29, 2012 6:13 AM EST up reply actions

Yep...

Nutting also did a interview with the Trib awhile back that he wants to see a time where his kids and grandkids own the team. That definetly sounds like a man who’s in it for the very long haul……..sigh.

Don't forget the 80's where the Mavs had Mark Aguirre and Derek Harper on the team

They were good then, even won a division title.

Now was he joking when he said that, or was he serious? Just curious.

Agree.

That said, that’s not the reason that yinzers want him. They just see a big checkbook with legs.

McCourt has agreed to identify the winning bidder by April 1.

So that the owner has just enough time to get crushed for the Dodgers underperforming this season!!! Helluva guy, that Frank McCourt.

I’m actually a little sad by this: I think Selig would throw his body in front of any attempt by Cuban to join his old boys’ club. This looked like Cuban’s best chance to circumvent Bud and buy in.

"Bud" will never let Cuban in,

EVER.

yeah this

for bud, it would be like letting a pissed off wolverine into your house

by johnnycuff on Jan 29, 2012 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

I thought this was his best chance

If Cuban put the highest bid in, but MLB wouldn’t approve the sale, McCourt’s shown that he wouldn’t defer to “the good of the game” and drag Allan & co. through court for as long as it took. In simplest terms, the Dodgers are McCourt’s asset and I can’t imagine a civil court ruling in Bud’s favor. This was your shot, Cuban!!!
