The Pirates have signed a 17-year-old Dominican prospect to a large bonus.

The Pirates have signed 17-year-old Dominican third baseman Johan Herrera for $300,000. Baseball America describes him as a left-handed power hitter who has some defensive shortcomings, so he may wind up at first base or some other position at some point. Beyond that, there isn't much we can glean from this, of course, except that the Pirates like him and that he'll be a player worth watching in the minors. He joins Julio de la Cruz and Michael de la Cruz (each of whom got $700,000, and no, they're not related) as the Bucs' top signings out of the Dominican this signing season.
