After the Pirates just signed Russel Martin to the highest FA signing in Pirates history, surely the #1 FA cant possibly be attainable? Well, hold on now. Lets look at the many factors wieghing in:
1. Obviously the most important one here: Would he want to sign here? I'd say yes. Grienke thrives in small markets, but he still holds a desire to win. Both of these would be met in Pittsburgh.
2. Can we afford him? Once again, I think we can. I think a 5 year, 100m plus player option could do the trick. 13: 14m 14: 21m 15: 20m 16: 19m 17: 19 m 18: 16 m Player Option(5 m buyout). Includes a 2 mill signing bonus. That 100 million includes the buyout. We'd also offer him a NTC to 10 teams. Having a front loaded deal works in the advantage that Cutch doesnt start getting past 10 mill till 2015. That means that once AJ and Wandy are gone, they will be replaced with, hopefully, Grienke, Cole, and Taillon. Plus new TV compensation will help.
3. Would he be fair value? I'll be optimistic and say yes, it will. Grienke wont turn 30 till October of next year. At age 34, Im confident he'll still be pretty effective and even at age 35 if he accepts his option. Greinke has pitched 200 innings the past 4 out of 5years and in all 5 has struck out 180 or usually more. His perciphels also indicate hell be even better. Grienke has been worth between 5 and 6 WAR, which under the WAR=5 mill scale means he might end up outproducing his contract.
What do you think? Would he go for something like this? How about the Pirates, oir more specifically, Bob Nutting?
