The Pirates have signed left-handed reliever Mike Zagurski to a minor league deal with a spring training invite.

Pirates Prospects is reporting the signing. Zagurski rode the AAA shuttle for several years with the Phillies, then saw action in 45 games with the Diamondbacks last year. In 69 innings in the majors, he has a 6.13 ERA, although his xFIP is much better at 4.35. He's had significant control and gopher ball problems, but has fanned over a batter an inning. He throws in the low 90s and his main secondary pitch is a slider. He'll be 30 in January.

Like Doug Slaten, Zagurski could potentially be useful to the Pirates as a LOOGY, but Clint Hurdle has shown that he doesn't understand what a lefty specialist is. In the majors, lefties have hit 265/333/372 against Zagurski, while righties have hit 295/401/550. IOW, an assault rifle in the hands of a three-year-old would be safer than Zagurski on Hurdle's roster.
