Josh Hamilton to sign with Angels

Ezra Shaw

The rich get richer as Josh Hamilton agrees to terms with the Angels.

Josh Hamilton has reportedly agreed to terms on a five-year, $125 million deal with the Angels.

So let's see, that's about $25 million for Hamilton next year, $20 million or so for Vernon Wells (!!!), $16 million each for Jered Weaver and Albert Pujols (the real money on Pujols' contract hasn't kicked in yet), $11.5 million for C.J. Wilson (ditto) and a combined $18 million for Howie Kendrick and Erick Aybar. With Hamilton, they'll have about $125 million each for 2013 and 2014 committed without even taking into account their league-minimum guys, arbitration-eligibles, or anyone else they might sign. They're also already on the hook for about $110 million in 2015. It's all silly money now thanks to their TV contract. It's remarkable, really, especially given that I don't even think the Angels have all that many actual fans,at least not relative to how much they spend. I lived in San Diego for six years, in the constant presence of young people from all over Southern California, and I can't remember ever seeing anyone in Angels apparel. I saw Dodgers and Giants apparel all the time. (To be fair, the Angels hosted over three million spectators last year. Obviously, someone watches them.)

Anyway, it appears the Angels will now have Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Hamilton in their lineup, giving the AL's third-ranked offense even more juice.
