Rumor: Bucs Mildly Interested In Joe Blanton
Jayson Stark says the Phillies are looking to trade Blanton whether or not they get Oswalt, and that the Pirates and the Orioles have expressed mild interest. But a trade would have to wait until Spring Training, when teams could see if Blanton had recovered from surgery.
Stark also mentions John Lannan, though not in a way that makes it sound like the Pirates expressed any interest, and some guy named A.J. Burnett. However, he reports that "the Pirates have told several teams that inquired about [Garrett] Jones that they're not inclined to move him." I hope that's at least a bit of a bluff.

So the Yankees and Phillies are looking to dump salary, and the Pirates are thinking of taking it on for them. I’m just imagining Huntington going around saying “”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp3wTXYoCCg">Fliff! Fliff!" (NSFW)

Is it too much to ask for the Yanks/Phillies
to ask for our Grade C/C+ in return for Burnett/Blanton/Lannan
Isn’t the point of improving our minor league depth is when the times have come to improve our major league roster if necessary.
Giving up GFJ for a starting pitcher is pointless. Is it too much to ask for them to receive a minor league pitcher. It’s not like we’ll have any use for them in the years ahead.
I guess as always...
…it depends on the cost.
Blanton + $5MM in salary relief for a C prospect wouldn’t bother me at all.
I advocate getting Blanton and Burnett to go along with Bedard, Barajas and Barmes.
The B Sharps!

My guess is...
…Blanton is Plan D in case Plan C (Burnett) falls through as Plans A (Jackson) and B (Oswalt) have already.
Wish Gavin Floyd hadn’t been yanked from the trade market.

My guess
is that the Sox are asking for a Gio/Latos/Cahill return for him. There are not many teams that have both the need for a starting pitcher and the prospect surplus to pull that off.

I'd bet that's right
Although who knows what goes on in Kenny Williams’s head.
Honestly, I’m a big fan of Gavin Floyd, but he either A) not as good (Gio/Latos) or B) doesn’t have the huge upside (Cahill) of those other 3 you mentioned.

I'd take a look if he is cheap and subsidized.
Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?

I thought about posting this on the Burnett thread
but the comment count there is just through the roof and I don’t feel like reading through all of it to find the appropriate place to add it. I like the idea of bringing in Burnett. He is a 200 inning/30 start guy that would add some much needed stability to the rotation. Jones, while valuable, is not the type of player that should actually hold up a trade. He might have extra “internal value” to the Pirates right now because he at least seems like a safe option at 1B when other guys (Hague, McGehee, Evans) all carry some amount of risk. What I’d like to see them do is see them drive the Yankees’ price up to paying ~$27M of Burnett’s deal in exchange for Jones and then bring in one more high-risk/high-reward guy at 1B like Brandon Allen or Clint Robinson.
I am not interested in Blanton or Lannan as I’d rather see those innings go to Brad Lincoln…
