Is she in it?
Just wondering if I should watch it or not.

Is it possible to mention Kristy or Lacee Collins around here without someone making some sort of comment about what they look like?
by Charlie Wilmoth on Feb 10, 2012 11:19 AM EST up reply actions
Agreed.
It’s pretty sexist, I think, and it wasn’t funny to begin with.
by Kidspud on Feb 10, 2012 12:03 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I think
most of the comments concerning Lacee are about her job performance rather than her looks.
by bosten7 on Feb 11, 2012 5:32 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
I think this is true
but I also think that there’s a sizable minority of comments about her looks. So someone will complain about her reporting, and there will be ten comments about “rotundra” and things like that and one or two comments about her looks. Which still means that her looks get discussed a lot more than if she were a man.
And anyway it’s different when we talk about men’s looks — we crack a lot of jokes about how funny-looking Jeff Karstens is, but men aren’t constantly being judged by their looks, unless they’re the devastatingly handsome Raybin.

Sorry, I was joking
bad form.
But on the other hand, its pretty much par for the course to put the “pretty ladies” in front of the camera. Like it or not, you don’t see any 200+ lb female sideline reporters, (or weather forcasters, etc.) but Tony Serigusa and Al roker have made livings despite their physical appearance. Call me a product of the system, but that’s the way it is.

That may be, although I don’t see what that has to do with Kristy. As far as I can tell, she’s accomplished most of what she has with pure elbow grease.
by Charlie Wilmoth on Feb 10, 2012 1:34 PM EST up reply actions
(Not sure what that has to do with Collins, either, come to think of it.)

Again
to defend myself a bit. The content matter isn’t, of itself, enough to make me want to watch it. How is it out of line for me to say that I would rather watch Kristy present something than I would Charlie? Is it out of like to say that there are aesthetic things that can enhance the presentation of material? Would you prefer Rush Limbaugh or Erin Andrews read the weather in the morning on your television (politics aside)? There is a reason beautiful people are desired to be seen, when others are not. It improves the product, and for me, the video described isn;t interesting enough, but if its presented by a person who I find is easy on the eyes, then it may have a higher entertainment value, and thus be worth my click.
I amend my earlier comment. It was a cop out. I wasn’t joking, I was asking because there is a value associated with who presents the material I absorb.
I apologize if it came off as raunchy, or insensitive. I will abstain from any further comments regarding the gender and relative attractiveness of people mentioned here.

Well, I guess it’s not, if for some reason there’s a specific discussion of the relative merits of two separate podcasts and the exact reasons to choose one or the other, or something like that. The problem I’m having is that, EVERY time someone mentions Kristy, someone starts talking about her looks immediately, and then there are invariably a bunch of comments about that. As if she doesn’t, you know, work hard, and watch the games, and provide good reporting, and all that, which she does.
It’s far worse on other forums than it is here, and of course the root of the problem is that lots of people are doing this, so I apologize for singling you out. I just hate that this comes up all the time.
by Charlie Wilmoth on Feb 10, 2012 2:27 PM EST up reply actions
No problem
I see where you are coming from. I don’t disregard the work that is done by Kristy. But I think there is a valid discussion here. The name of her blog is/was “Hands Off My Pirate’s Booty”. Honestly, do you think a guy gets away with using that title? The entendre is obvious. It implies, at least to me, that she is recognizing that some of her appeal is “Her Pirate Booty”. ( I would not put it that way, and am not sure if I have ever seen her below the neck) If she wants to be playful with her sexuality (as opposed with Jen Langosh’s site “By gosh, its Langosh”, which is also a play on words, but totally asexual) then I don’t see how recognizing something that she uses to her advantage is harmful. I agree that this can be taken too far. I’m sure it is taken too far too often. But to have the question of her appearing in the video as sexist seems a bit to far.
Sorry to keep this going, just curious on where you stand with this. There is a difference between the way people treat Ines Sainz and Suzie Kolber. The difference here fascinates me, and Kristy and Jen L are another example of this.
by Wizard of Woz on Feb 10, 2012 2:47 PM EST up reply actions
I can’t speak for Kristy, but I don’t think the whimsical title of a blog she hasn’t written for in over a year should be taken as an encouragement to make every single conversation about her looks rather than her work. And I doubt the title of her old blog really has much to do with the reasons people talk about her the way they do.
… And no problem. I’m happy to discuss it. In fact, it’s been bothering me for a while.

Yes, by all means
rewind yourself. We all know that ugly people are people too. And one should never look at attractive people directly. Proper 21st century etiquette necessitates that you quickly look away when you observe an attractive person.

that's a valid point for discussion
which can be made without discussing her looks.

there are lots of broadcasters who are terrible at their jobs
Most of them are men and don’t have to face this question.

Ticket Info Question
Everytime I have gone to PNC I have just winged it and bought tickets at the door. I want to take the family to see the Marlins in July on Firework Nite. Is there a direct PNC Park phone number where I can reserve in advance in case it gets sold out? Really old school here and don’t want to go through stubhub. Thanks.
1-800-BUY-BUCS
At least that’s what it’s always been.
They used to open up single game ticket sales around March 1, and there’s be a huge line at the box office, but I think the internet has killed that. Which is a shame, because I loved that tradition – it was like Pitchers and Catchers for fans, the first real sign of spring.
Its nice for me though
I love about 2 hours out of town, and its tough to get away from work. Now I can just buy them from my desk and have a chance to pay normal price for opening day and fireworks nights.
