Pirates and Yankees have a framework of a possible AJ Burnett deal in place, and they are now working through conditions of that framework.
Buster Olney. Follow-up: "The Burnett deal is not done, but the Yankees and Pirates have a lot of common ground, and Pittsburgh is the clear frontrunner as of 2/12." (That's the date, not the salary.)

I guess the framework is that we get Burnett and the Yankees get the absence of Burnett.

So, if the Burnett trade goes down . . .
I guess the official offseason tally will be as follows (only counting moves likely to affect 25 man roster):
Starters: In- Burnett, Bedard
Out- Maholm
Relievers: Out- Veras
Catcher: In- Barajas
Out- Doumit, Snyder
1B: In- Magahee
Out- Lee
SS: In- Barmes
Out- Cedeno
I may be missing some, but I think that’s it.
I would say there is a small loss with regard to position players. Lee wasn’t as good as he looked with us last year, but a Lee/Jones combination probably outproduces a Jones/Magahee platoon by a recognizable margin. I think SS is probably a push. At catcher, If Doumit/Snyder were able to stay healthy, there is a clear advantage over Barajas/McHenry. But, their injury history is legit, so it’s probably just a small downgrade.
I would say there is a small upgrade with the pitching staff. Burnett/Bedard (and whoever fills in when Bedard gets injured) is a small upgrade over Maholm/Correia, with the potential to be a legit upgrade if Bedard stays healthy and Burnett bounces back like may of us believe he will. This more than makes up for the downgrade from Veras to whoever.
All in all, I would say the Pirates held serve this offseason, which, of course, isn’t a good thing when you won 72 games the year before. I think this is a 74 win team. However, the fate of this team is the same now as it was before the offseason started: In the end, how this team does is more dependent on the progression (Tababta, McDonald, Alvarez, Walker)/legitness (Morton, Karstens, Presely) of the guys alreadyon the roster at the end of the year. Obviously, Alvarez is the key, if he can somehow play at a 2-3 WAR and we got a few other small, reasonable breaks, I could see the streak ending.
Post Script: If I spelled MaGahee wrong throughout this post, I apologize for being too lazy to mopen another browser once I started.
Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you
Also out: Matt Diaz and Lyle Overpaid.
I’d say that 2012 is looking freaking awesome just by the fact that we don’t have those guys with us anymore!

Replaced by McLouth (or to Smiziots, McClouth), and probably Fox or Evans.

Well....
Fox and Evans are cheaper than Overpaid and they probably won’t be starting everyday either.
As for McLouth, well, if we’re lucky he’ll pick up where he left off with us in 2009….

i love fox and evans
on minor league contracts. evans especially. i’ll keep saying it over and over again haha
Agreed!!
In this day and age of free agency, sometimes just NOT having a huge downgrade (like losing a Pujols or Fielder) can be considered a victory.
I think this has been a solid off-season, thus far. Obviously, no splash, but I don’t think the Pirates are worse off in any position on the diamond, and have made a few slight improvements.
I certainly feel a lot better about the Opening Day 2012 Pirates, than the 2011. By resetting Scranton’s list to Opening Day, it looks more like this….
Kevin Correia remains – to be moved to the pen after Morton’s return (in essence is replaced by Karstens who started last year in the pen)
Paul Maholm replaced by A. J. Burnett (possibly)
Ross Ohlendorf replaced by Erik Bedard
Charlie Morton
James McDonald
Joel Hanrahan
Evan Meek
Chris Resop
Jeff Karstens remains (but has moved from pen to rotation)
Jose Veras replaced by ??
Mike Crotta replaced by Jason Grilli
Garrett Olson replaced by Jo-Jo Reyes?
Ryan Doumit replaced by Rod Barajas
Jason Jaramillo replaced by Michael McKenry
Lyle Overbay replaced Casey McGehee
Neil Walker
Ronny Cedeno replaced by Clint Barmes
Pedro Alvarez
Steve Pearce replaced by Nick Evans/Jake Fox
Josh Rodriguez replaced by Yamaico Navarro/Gustavo Nunez/Josh Harrison/Chase d’Arnaud
Jose Tabata
Andrew McCutchen
Matt Diaz replaced by Nate McLouth
Garrett Jones
John Bowker replaced by Alex Presley

heard something silly on twitter about Yanks liking Nick Kingham
and i will go smash something if we give up Kingham for Burnett, but i feel like that was just a rumor and NH would never be that stupid. Kingham ZVR and Dodson are big sleeper prospects IMO and will have breakout years in terms of recognition this year

Yeah. I’d be amazed if anything like that happened.

it was some marginal sportswriter
that Tim Williams re-tweeted. Yeah i doubt that would happen though and Tim said the same thing like two minutes later.
or did you mean the second part about those guys possibly having breakout seasons? you’ve been so negative lately Charlie :)
the tweet was that the Yanks were interested in Nick Kingham
which is surely true, in the way that the single straight guys on the board are probably interested in Kate Upton.

Srsly, I think that’s just like how whenever people mention Albert Pujols the fact tends to come up that he’s good at hitting a baseball. Whereas it’s not Kristy’s job.

hilarious commenters
praising Cashman as making ‘great moves’ hahaha. Cashman all in all to me seems like an awful GM who makes emotion based decisions all the time and the only reason he does ‘well’ is because he basically has an unlimited piggy bank.
also – the girl he cheats on his wife with isnt even hot and seems nuts. nerd
Now watch AJ beat the Yanks in Game 7 of the World Series this year.

I dunno
I don’t think he’s a great GM or anything, but he also has to deal with an insane amount of meddling from ownership, and pressure from the fans. And yeah, the Yankees money allows him to get deals done, but going out and getting guys like Pineda isn’t that easy.
Update 10:15 CST per Heyman's twitter:
Yankees, pirates still optimistic about possible aj deal. Still working out $ and other players, but working hard on it

The more I think about it, the more I like this. Replacing Correia with Burnett for around 30 starts will make the Pirates two or three wins better next year, and there should be a fair upgrade in 2013, too, if Burnett is still around.
Morton-Bedard-McDonald-Karstens-Burnett is, at best, a paradigm of mediocrity. But there’s nobody in that rotation that takes the mound and makes you think, “Wow, there’s not a chance in Hell we’re winning this ballgame.” It’s an improvement.
No jinx no jinx no jinx.
Correia was an All-Star last year!!!
Because he won games! Unlike that looseer Maholam!!!

Also, Burnett’s got a great “give-up-bomb-and-look-over-shoulder” motion. He jerks his neck quickly and decisively after a bad pitch, and his f-bombs are VERY clearly mouthed. I want somebody who cares, god damnit!

I don’t think Correia is as bad as people make him out to be, at the beginning of the year he did look pretty good hitting his corners and minimizing the damage. It not like he didn’t deserve the All star bid. Granted it all fell apart in the end, but what is better 3 months of all star performance followed with 2 months of Air Correia, or 5 months of mediocrity
I don't see why Morton-Bedard-McDonald-Karstens-Burnett
can’t all have great seasons. Remember when the Orioles had 4 20 game winners? Who predicted that?
I think 12-13 WAR from those 5 isn't an unreasonable hope.
15-16 from the pitching staff as a whole is within reason, and that’s about an average staff, maybe just a tick below average.
Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you
Just look at the genius of the Front Office
Morton for McClouth
Bedard for $$$
McDonald for Dotel
Karstens for Nady?
Burnett for $$$
I'm taking the gloves off now!
I’m willing to bet $100 to anyone here. I say the Bucs will not only finish .500 this year but they will be within 5 games of first Sept1st. Charlie picks the charity of choice who will recieve the money. It’s a win-win situation. If I lose some charity gets $100. If I win everyone here has to give $100 to the charity which I’m sure you will all be fine with. Come on! Bring it on! I’m taking names! Who is in!

As long as we don’t give up a great prospect, I’m perfectly fine with replacing Corriea with burnett. I do wonder if this deal is not to replace Corriea but a hedge against Bedard. I guess it is both. I can see either Burnett thriving once leaving the negativity in new york, or just self destructing if things don’t turn out so good.
The Yankees know they can make a Burnett deal with the Pirates but they first want to make sure that nothing else is available before pulling the trigger, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. All signs point to the Yankees moving Burnett in the coming days and trying to sign Eric Chavez and a left-handed DH with the money saved.
Sounds like there’s a deal in place but the Yankees want to shop it to see whether anybody will beat it. Could be a couple days, I suppose.
Occupy MLB! Down with Seligula!
what I still don't get
is why the Yankees want Eric Chavez. Over the past four years he’s hit 238/288/341 in 424 total PAs. Surely that’s well into “he done” territory?

I think
they are hoping more for Damon or Ibanez to compliment Andruw Jones. Chavez is more the plan C to their plan B. Which makes him what? Plan G?
by KentuckyPirate on Feb 12, 2012 12:08 PM EST up reply actions
A-Rod insurance?
George Steinbrenner may be dead, but name recognition still counts a lot for the Yankees. If I were them, I’d have worked harder to find a way to get the Pirates to part with Garrett Jones rather than look for a fossil like Chavez or Ibanez, or even Damon.

FYI
I heard Brandon Webb has began throwing the other day.
I meant AJB was a injury prone back to the days in Tornado. And his contract has 2 yrs left, they should take it in mind
Burnett is about as durable as they come
He’s made at least 21 starts for 7 straight years. He’s made 25+ starts 6/7 years. He’s 30+ starts 5/7 years and thrown 200+ innings 3/7 years.
