"He is getting ready to go to spring training, whether it’s with the Yankees, Pittsburgh or anyone else," [A.J. Burnett's agent] Darek Braunecker said in a brief phone interview. "A.J. understands this is a business and will do what he has to do. He’s healthy and he’s looking forward to pitching for somebody."

I think the people worried about him being a headcase should rest assured.

I think he’ll be fine here, plus Clint thrives on guys like this.

I posted this in the last thread, but I think it's important to remember here:

In his career, A.J. Burnett has been caught by Rod Barajas in 25 games and 163 innings. The Barajas/Burnett battery—used a lot by Toronto in 2008—produced a 3.49 ERA and .693 opposing OPS. Burnett’s total ERA that year was over a half run greater than when he exclusively threw to Barajas.

There’s no reason not to think they’d work reasonably well together.

No jinx no jinx no jinx.

Anyone think he will do better in

the NL Central? Not because its easier, but because mot of the batters haven’t seen him – he’s spent his whole (baseball) life in the AL East; there might be some guys who can tell what pitch is coming blindfolded.

Welcome to the new dark ages.....

by Trogluddite on Feb 12, 2012 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

No, I think it would be because it’s easier to face a lineup with eight batters.

by bolton on Feb 12, 2012 6:10 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Well, that too...

…and getting more starts against the Cubs and Astros rather than against Boston and Toronto. Maybe a few more balls stay in PNC than stay in Yankee stadium. But again, I would think that the batter benefits more in repeating the “pitcher v. batter” match-up than the pitcher does. Just like long at-bats, where the batter fouls everything off, he learns more about the pitcher. So, maybe AJ also gets a little extra benefit (= to a decrease in ERA of, say, 0.30 points) from pitching to guys who have rarely seen him before.

Welcome to the new dark ages.....

by Trogluddite on Feb 12, 2012 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

We need a bigger bump than 0.30 on the ERA

otherwise, his 2010-11 numbers would still have the highest ERA in the rotation.

by Thunder on Feb 12, 2012 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Also, not to nitpick, but A.J. pitched 7 seasons in the NL. Regardless of where he pitches, he needs to limit his walks. He’s thrown at least 3.5 per 9 innings in every season since 2006.

by bolton on Feb 12, 2012 6:19 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

i think he does..

this does’nt mean I want NH to overpay for Burnett, but with that being said I think out of all the pitchers we’ve been lobbying for or connected with rumors (Jackson, Maholm, Oswalt, etc) Burnett will be the most productice pitcher. Obvisouly barring some sort of serious attitude or motivational issues that some are suggesting….

by FusilliJerry88 on Feb 12, 2012 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not against trading for Burnett, but that’s really optimistic. I would take Jackson or Oswalt in a heartbeat. Let’s not forget that Burnett is 35 years old and was bad at 33 and 34. He walks too many batters, allows too many home runs and threw 25 wild pitches last season (If Wakefield retires then A.J. is the active leader in MLB). He still has good stuff, so he’s worth a flier. I expect nothing and hope for the best.

by bolton on Feb 12, 2012 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

eh

i think Jackson and Burnett have very similar seasons so Burnett @ 5-6 mil > Jackson @ 11 mil. As far as Oswalt is concerned; I don’t think he pitches 100 innings this year..

I'm surprised

A standard no trade clause for the Pirates hasn’t been written into the CBA. That would have come in handy in ’07 with Matt Morris.

by Jitterbug on Feb 12, 2012 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

oh-ho-ho-ho-ho, my my, hi-lar-i-ous!!!

People tend to forget, that (speaking strictly as a baseball trade) the Giants waived Rajai Davis FOUR DAYS BEFORE the Pirates did the same to Morris. And MacFarland went to Independent ball the following year (where he still remains.)

I know people can’t get enough Matt Morris jokes, but let’s not forget that the Giants and Pirates both cut loose everyone involved in the trade right around the same time. It would be a bit funnier if the Giants had run away with an All-Star from this trade.

I know the Pirates spent a lot of cash on Morris, but it doesn’t come within 100 million miles of the ARam trade.

by impliedi on Feb 12, 2012 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

I mean..

Morris was worth -2.3 WAR in the last two seasons of his career.

Davis has been worth 4.6 WAR since the trade.

Considering Davis hasn’t been paid much at all in his career, it was a clear win for the Giants, but oddly they didn’t keep Davis either.

by jlk9697 on Feb 12, 2012 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

that was kind of my point....

Davis turned out to be a solid player, but he lasted less time in SF than Morris did in Pittsburgh. It’s not as if the Giants made out as bandits in the trade. They ended up with the more productive player from that point forward, but they weren’t the recipients of much of that productivity. And they cut Davis loose without getting anything for him, so both teams were left holding nothing less than a year after the trade.

by impliedi on Feb 12, 2012 9:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

The Giants would have taken a blind dead guy in exchange for someone taking all of Morris’ salary.

Reasons to be optimistic.

I have posted this in another thread, but I am going to create a list of reasons to why we should have high hopes for Burnett.

1. The last reports I read had Burnett healthy and hitting 93 on the gun. If he is slipping, he still seems to have a lot in the tank.

2. Bigger ball park( balls blew out of Yankees Stadium last year)

3. Better defense behind him.

4. Less pressure from the media.

5. Gets to face a pitcher for the first time since 2005( 198 Ks and 3.34 era)

6. The NL central is going to have an awful offense in general while the AL East had the best offense by division last year even taking the Yankees out of it.

7. Had way more strikeouts and higher K/9 than any of our pitchers last year.

8. Almost pitched 200 innings last year(we need an innings eater)

9. While he didnt have the best season last year, he did improve pretty much across the board from the previous year which helps against the declining arguement.

10. Just look at Javier Vazquez pitching 87 MPH and coming to the NL to dominate :-)

by sidbreamslegs on Feb 12, 2012 8:59 PM EST reply actions

I like your optimism!!!

Personally, I’m not expecting Burnett to have some kind of Cy Young candidate year, nor will it make me think any less of the acquisition than if he just turns in a solid year.

Just like all eyes should be on Alvarez’s offense this season, I think all eyes should be on Morton’s pitching.

I mean, all the Pirates need is for Burnett and Bedard to be better than the combination of Correia/Ohlendorf/Maholm and the Pirates are already ahead of last year. Not exactly a tall order. A very, very good year from both Bedard and Burnett would be stupendous, but not necessary. Again, I want most to see if Charlie Morton will take a big step forward (or backward) the year. Solid performances out of the others would be enough to make me happy.

by impliedi on Feb 12, 2012 9:14 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

And, as others have alluded to....

I’m much more concerned with starters 6-10 of the rotation, than the regular top 5. The lackschedule of rotationthe depth is outright scary. I think the top 5 are going to be perfectly fine. It’s when one goes down that the Pirates will be in real trouble this year.

More thru MLBTR
New York is insistent on getting the “right players” in a Burnett trade, tweets Marc Carig of the New Jersey Star-Ledger. Carig’s source notes that this is “not a give away” of Burnett, and says that the two sides intend to keep working toward a deal

I’m not sure how much this means, although it’s safe to say the Yankees aren’t going to accept Noah Krol in return. One thing to keep in mind with all these reports: nearly all of them are coming out of NY. We’re used to an environment where there’s very little that leaks out about negotiations, thanks to the fact that most of the media could give a shit less about the Pirates. The Yankees are used to using the media as a tool in their negotiations, and the NY media happily obliges. This is a totally different environment from the one in which the Pirates normally operate and this stuff can’t be taken at face value.

Looking at Burnett's 2011 road splits

It appears most of the damage came in three disastrous starts, one each at Baltimore, White Sox and Minnesota. In those three starts, he posted a 20.70 ERA and 3.20 WHIP. The rest of his road starts he had a 4.09 ERA and 1.39 WHIP.

I don’t have time to add up the exact 2010 and 2009 numbers right now but the same pattern held. In 2009 there were two bad starts and 2010 there were four. In all three years, Burnett got shelled in US Cellular Field. The Bucs don’t play the White Sox this year, so Burnett wouldn’t have to face his personal house of horrors

If we do end up trading for Burnett, i think another nice piece to this offseason would be to sign Scott Kazmir. I know the past 2 seasons he has been awful, but he was a stud for the 4 years previous. He and Bedard would be or only two LH starters and would give the starters great depth/experience/upside. Having Bedard, Burnett and Kazmir there would be insane amounts of upside in all 3 of them.

Kazmir has no upside left that I know of

unless he’s recovered velocity out of nowhere

Rays

had a tremendous talent there and insisted on loading innings (186 at 21, 200+ at 23) on a young arm. Kazmir stood up to it for awhile but look what we have now, at age what, 28?

Even good teams do stupid shit, I guess in the hope that the young fireballing stud will be the 1 exception to the rule of 999 others. (See also: Willis, Dontrelle).

I get the idea: Empty his tank in the six years you have him and leave nothing for the next team, but that’s a terrible way to treat talent.

Heard he was clocking in at like 84mph. Sad to see such a fall.

well

I can feel sorry for a guy who’s body physically broke down, and that ended his professional career. The guy now cannot do what he LOVED to do…because his body broke down.

I don’t see how earnings play into if you do/don’t feel sorry for someone.

They can suck it in NY

New York is insistent on getting the “right players” in a Burnett trade, tweets Marc Carig of the New Jersey Star-Ledger. Carig’s source notes that this is “not a give away” of Burnett, and says that the two sides intend to keep working toward a deal

I call bull on this

I think everyone that gives a hoot about baseball knows the Yankee’s modus operandi, they get the “right players” by signing them to new contracts, and most (not all – they’ve smartened up recently by actually paying attention during the draft) of their starters are ridiculous baseball talents. Everything I’ve heard and what I tend to believe is that any posturings such as this are attempts to publicly save face, both for the team, and for the player involved (AJ). The Yankees will never publicly announce, “Yeah, we needed to get Burnett’s albatross of a contract off the books so we could go sign a player that could actually help us.” They’ll make motions that this was a baseball move and that (insert low upside prospect name here) was the player they really wanted. In reality, that same player will most likely be a player that’s out of baseball in 3 years or less.

Book it, Dano.
