Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Utility guy, C/1B/OF type, just became a FA after being dfa'd by the powerhouse Mariners. He's been a good hitter in the minors, but helpless so far in about half a season's worth of chances in the majors. Since he'd be a FA and not a waiver claim, I assume this would be a minor league deal, with the chance to compete with Evans/Fox, or maybe with Morales/Fort.

He's not that great

But a minor league deal is fine.

Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?

Never a bad idea to have an extra catcher on hand.

Probably also worth noting that he was a minor leaguer for the Indians during NH’s time in their front office.

It’s interesting to see their focus on catcher/utility types, guys who can hit some (at least in the minors), are questionable defensively, and can play elsewhere besides catcher. Fox, Morales and now (assuming this report is correct) Gimenez.

I wonder if they’re considering carrying three guys who can catch, as a hedge against Barajas injury-proneness.

Occupy MLB! Down with Seligula!

I think you might be right.

You might be able to count McGehee as part of that list, too.

Indians

Ahh, there always has to be an Indians connection. If only NH had worked for the Rays!

Also saw that he played a good bit at 3rd, especially early on in his minor league career.

Though he committed 25 errors in 100 career minor league games at 3rd, so there may be a good reason that he doesn’t play there anymore.

Again, I’m always in favor of bringing a bunch of guys into Spring Training, since you never know what’s going to happen (as was seen last year at C). Not only injuries, but when you’ve got an enormous question mark hanging over the head of your starting 3B, it’s probably wise to fill up your full compliment of NRI’s. A Pedro-less Pirates squad could have a huge shuffling effect around the rest of the diamond.
