[Geovany] Soto was almost traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates last season and could be moved this summer if the other catchers step up.
Bruce Levine, "Cubs spring preview: Catchers", ESPN.com, 2/15/12.
We knew that the Pirates had made inquiries about Soto, but this is the first report I've seen indicating that a deal was ever close. I wonder what the Cubs would have received?

A little disappointing
that we couldn’t get this done since he would absolutely (at least IMO) be an upgrade over Barajas and should be decent at least for the next couple of years. If I had to guess, the hold up was probably that the Pirates wanted him at a “buy-low” price since his numbers were way down last year while the Cubs were still asking for something that reflected his 2010 production.
Oh well.
Considering that we don’t know what the Cubs were demanding for him, I don’t know if we should be too disappointed about this trade not going down. Not saying we don’t need an upgrade at catcher, but I doubt the Cubs would have given up nothing for him.

Given our catching issues last year, I have no doubt that the Cubs were asking for the moon in return for Soto. I would have loved to seen them get him, but given the possible asking price, its probably a good thing that they didn’t. It would put my mind at ease if we can snag him at some point this year to back up Barajas and help bridge to Sanchez taking over.
If I recall correctly
There were several teams who were asking way way more than what their catchers were worth when NH came calling last season, just because they knew how desperate we were for someone with a functional glove. He’d probably be an upgrade, but as always, what’s it cost?
The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.
Perspectives become reality.

I don't know what his contract situation is, but I would definitely be willing to talk about Soto.
I have always coveted Soto, especially after the 2009 season when people started to turn more sour on him. He’s probably worth 2 WAR going forward for a few more years.
Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?

i'd be all over this
for the right price. that’s the elephant in the room. Soto is a pretty good player and i’d love to him for the next three years until Tony Sanchez is ready to rock just as Soto is beginning to decline.
I'm sure
the Cubs were asking for a lot. Within the division they weren’t just going to give him to us for hardly nothing.
Thats what she said! - Michael Gary Scott
The downside is...
Now we’d have to negotiate with a front office that knows what they’re doing.
+1
I’m way less inclined to deal with Theo.

My guess is they were trying for a center fielder, either trying for Tabs, Marte or Cutch.

This article was talking about the cubs "exciting options for CF this year.
Dunno Byrd, Tony Campana, Brett Jackson and Reed Johnson are not my idea of exciting options.
Never been a Soto fan...
and ain’t one now, neither.

The drawback of this trade if it goes down this season
Endless stories about how “shrewd” of a move it was for Epstein to trade an “aging” catcher for young talent, pretty much regardless of who actually gets sent to Chicago.
