Why do we put up with this? We still need Mark Cuban!!!!
I love the Pirates. I hate the owners way of running the team. 3 years or so I first posted they needed new owners to put some money into the team, find smarter people, and change things. Most of comments, but not all, seemed to say I didn't know what I was talking about and the new GM just needed time. 3 more years, and nobody outside this website thinks they have a snowballs chance in He## of breaking .500, let alone making the playoffs. How does adding a old pitcher with a era of over 5.10 is going to lower the teams ERA and fix last year's problems. God, I'm s sucky fantasy baseball owner, and I know you don't expect good pitching from an old fart with a high era. 20 plus years and another crummy one coming up people. Anyone want to tell me I was right 3 years ago, and I'm right now, they really are not capable of winning with the current owner.

Wow
Im sure you know how the bigs work…the bucs will 5 mil this year and 8 mil next year for a pitcher than far exceeds most of the FA options that were available in the market this year. Most of the fans in the burgh wanted a “splash” signing of a rotation pitcher. NH stole a high caliber starter for nothing. Also look at stats other than era and wins and losses then we will talk a bit.

uh after this season we can start to judge. it takes more than 3-4 years to say drafts, etc pay off at the MLB level. Generally its years 6 and 7, this is year 5. Come back again after 2014 and I’ll be more than happy to discuss the 7yr plan and whether it worked or not.

Power to the People Right On!
Yep, we need to storm the Bastille and lop off some heads. You bring the guillotine. Once those guys are gone, we can fly Mark Cuban in. Then with his pockets stuffed full of large wads of cash, he can parachute into the infield of PNC park and take control of matters.
(1) The team is not for sale and short of the Nuttings pulling a “McCourt”, there is nothing that the MLB or any governmental agency can do to force them to “sale the team”.
(2) The cupboard was bare when NH took over and it takes more than three years to build a contender when you are starting from scratch. I doubt that even the Yankees, with all of their financial resources could do it.
(3) No one from the Pirates ever threw three years out there as the timeline for the team to be competitive. Maybe some guys on this board did but why would put any stock into the word of some anonymous person on an internet message board?
(4) As far as the problem you have with them acquiring Burnett, they made a legitimate offer for Jackson, and Oswalt told them not to bother trying. Who should they have gone after? Zombie Walter Johnson?
"Don Mossi was the complete five-tool ugly player. He could run ugly, hit ugly, throw ugly, field ugly and ugly for power.
Zombie Walter Johnson has had a serious dip in velocity...
probably due to his arm literally falling off.
A'hhh
I’m sure Dr. James Andrews could fix him right up
"Don Mossi was the complete five-tool ugly player. He could run ugly, hit ugly, throw ugly, field ugly and ugly for power.
Pffft, Zombie Walter Johnson would be lit up like a X-Mas tree
Now Zombie Grover Cleveland Alexander, he could win you a WS title.

Welcome to the new dark ages.....
your entire post
has zero evidence to back up your claims, no links to people who can back up your claims, and is just basic ranting about what one person feels. Your post adds nothing to the discussion and comes off as being one angry fans opinion. You cite ERA as the sole reason for not liking the Burnett acquisition which is almost as idiotic as saying “well he lost too many games last year”. You do not cite your reason for believing “they can’t win with the current owner”. You also add name calling which is childish and, again, adds nothing to the discussion. Besides yourself and various people inside Smizik’s crowd, please cite those who state the Pirates don’t have a “snowballs chance in HE##”. Lastly, I’m not the kind of person to knit-pick but, for the love of God, learn basic grammar. If my beginner-level ESL students can do it, you can to.

They ain't blowing nothin'
The Yankees had 2010 revenues of $427M
The Red Sox had 2010 revenues of $272M
These numbers also exclude the revenues of, respectively, YES (100% owned by Yankee Global Enterprises) and NESN (80% owned by Fenway Sports Group).
The Yankees and Red Sox are spending a ton of money – but they’re funding it from revenues, not from a wealthy owner throwing money into the organization.

being that this FO's first drafted players ...
started full season in ‘09..i think being in 1st place in July 11 is a pretty nice accomplishment after bottoming out in ’10. even Mr Cuban had to be on the bandwagon at that point. sure we didnt finish strong but that’ll happen when most of your team has little full season experience at the ML level and you’re decimated with injuries. not sure why an acquisition like Burnett to go along with the other Killer B’s could spark such the same arguments as 3 years ago. when is the last time we signed this many guys to start rather than be bench players? Overbay sure , but he was a last resort, which is why we went out early and were aggressive this year. add nice experience from added vets, another year to our youngsters, and i’m not sure why we couldnt extend July into Sept. . or why anyone would think we absolutely couldnt and that there was no light at the end of the tunnel unless we were owned by a famous person.
And for God’s sake puhlease dont bring ERA on here as a ‘reason’ he wont do well..in that case we should of dropped Charlie Morton before last season like i’m sure you and many others wanted.
The missed irony in this...
Is that Charlie and some of the more knowledgeable posters here have been very critical of the FO this offseason; in my less-knowledgeable opinion, too much so. Anyone considering this a haven of pro-ownership interwebbers clearly hasn’t been reading any of the pre-Burnett posts. 2 months ago, the majority consensus here was that the FO was punting 2012.
Yes but this isn’t about the for its about ownership

I understand the OP's frustration with what's been going on.
But even though I’ve been pretty vocal about some things lately, the fact is, the Pirates front office is doing pretty much what it should be doing with regards to trying to build a successful franchise in a small market city such as Pittsburgh.
Do I agree with every trade or free agent signing? Obviously not, but the Mark Cubans of the world aren’t the answer.
If someone like Cuban owned the team, he would make a bunch of hot-shot deals in-order to impress everyone and he would probably undo all the work that has been done over the past few years.
The team might win for a few years, but much like Wayne Huizenga discovered in the late 90’s, throwing a ton of money at a team with a low-revenue stream just isn’t a good idea in the long term.
The reason why the Pirates are still struggling three years after you initially raised your point is because the farm system was almost completely devoid of talent when Huntington took over and you’re just not going to rebuild a system like that in a year or two.
I’d say it’s fair to give the front office another year or two to see if the current plan is a good one.
