#Yankees viewed [Diego] Moreno as 1 of #Pirates top-10 prospects, though knew Pit didn't. Know has "maturity" issues but like big arm (97mph) and wonder if he could be a big-arm, low-cost find like [Scott] Proctor, [Brian] Bruney, who both at least helped briefly. #Yankees think other AJ acq [Exicardo] Cayones can hit, but not for power. Unless develop power don't think can make it, not enough speed to stay in CF

There's no question
Moreno and Cayones are among the best prospects in the majors…now that they’re in the Yankees organization.

Yeah, if Yankees fans are excited about getting a prospect with the potential of Brian Bruney, they need to have their heads examined.

If Moreno is such a good prospect, how did he slip thru Rule 5? He’s the classic sort of Rule-5er-who-sticks: a hard-throwing reliever.

Why don't you tell me 'bout the mystery team?
I wanna know about the mystery team
Because I’ve tried and I’ve tried and I’m still mystified.
I can’t do it anymore and I’m not satisfied.

no problem bd
lets see if this works;
The other team involved in the A.J. Burnett talks was the Philadelphia Phillies. Obviously would’ve had to clear Blanton to make it work.

i like that – it looks good and credits the source. Probably sucks on a mobile device though.
Yinzers uber alles
I know this is a few days old already
But I when I read Buster’s tweet there, I thought it was especially funny, because I believe the Pirates were rumored to be talking to Philadelphia for Blanton. So had Burnett gone to Philly, the Pirates would’ve been the third team involved to take Blanton instead.
maybe not
Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN
What the Phillies tried to do last week, sources said today, was trade Joe Blanton for Bobby Abreu, then flip Abreu for Burnett.

LOL
Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?

Reading the comments at Pinstripe Alley...
(hell, reading the posts) will make you hate the Yankees and their fans even more.
Somehow getting two fringe prospects and throwing away $20 million makes this the greatest case of buggery since ancient Greece.
And here I thought this a win-win trade…
Someone
above alluded to the fact that he has now entered the Yankee Prospect Machine. By midsummer Cashman will be referring to him as “the centerpiece of the Burnett deal” and claim he is untouchable. Shortly thereafter he will be a throw-in in a trade deadline deal.
"Don Mossi was the complete five-tool ugly player. He could run ugly, hit ugly, throw ugly, field ugly and ugly for power.
Now, lets not kid ourselves here — Moreno COULD become a shut down reliever. I actually see it happening. However, that would still make this trade a good one depending on the usefulness of Burnett, as both Moreno and Cayones were logjammed in our system.
Thank you Ned Colletti.
All anybody has to do is have a breakout season and they are no longer “logjammed”. Take Robbie grossman for example. I do agree both of them are far down the depth chart and wouldn’t have much of a shot at a regular MLB spot but crazier things have happened.

Moreno was actually our 7th best prospect heading into last season according to sickell. He was ahead of Dodson, Cain, and kingham to name a few. Obviously the statuses of prospects can change a ton over the course of a year and they have but I thought this was going to be a complete salary dump going into this deal and we actually gave up TWO guys that are actually considered prospects which seems a bit high especially after they bumped us up to 13 million. I’m not gonna lose sleep over losing those two guys but still kinda sucks in my opinion. At least we got an innings eater.

This year...
Sickels didn’t have him (or Cayones) among the top 39 Pirates prospects.
Personally, I probably would have put Moreno in the top 30. I don’t think I’d have had Cayones in the top 50.

I always used a "Z"
until I kept seeing it with an “s.”
He’s gone now, and I can’t tell the difference between the two through the tears, anyway.

Suggesting that a player who, if everything goes well, may . . .
in the best case scenarion because of his position, provide 1.5-2 WAR a season or 2 is a top 10 prospect in a pretty decent system is pretty silly. I had Moreno in the 25-30 range.
Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you
Yep
I think that’s a pretty good summary: Cayones is Redman or Duffy – at the upside. I mean, anything can happen with a youngish player – maybe he could learn something and fundamentally change his game – but there’s no reason to see “MLB regular” in his future, not even at the second percentile.
Moreno probably has a 1/3 chance of providing some value out of the pen, and a non-zero chance of being an effective closer for a year or two, but you can live without that – that sort of thing is dime a dozen.
All that spin has to be dizzying
Seriously, top ten? Give me a break. If they wanted him that badly, they’d have snagged him in the Rule 5
