Pirates Prospects are speculating that Roache sounds like our guy with the lack of power in the system. Personally I'm hoping for a SS or for Appel to waiver a bit this season and fall nicely to us at 8.

are you trying to give Vlad a kidney stone?

IIRC, Vlad does not like Stanford pitchers.

Not actually affiliated with whygavs.

I don't think

Stanford is good with hitters either. This being said, I’d think its a little foolish to write off a player because of where they come from…I mean, if the Bucs had a chance to draft a Strasburg, I wouldn’t want them to pass because he was at Stanford.

by NastyNate82 on Feb 2, 2012 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

Strasburg wouldn’t end up at Stanford, because he isn’t DOOMED TO FAILURE.

Sorry, I’ll shut up now.

by Vlad on Feb 3, 2012 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I was referring to

A Strasburg, not THE original. I get what you’re saying though, you do have to take into consideration everything about the player, including the program they just came from. I just wouldn’t want to pass on a guy because of where he went to school if everything else looked great about the player. Speaking of pitchers with ground meat for shoulders, wasn’t Rice even worse than Stanford? Or has that reputation more undeserved?

there's been a few out of Rice

the biggest to falter was Matt Anderson, taken first overall in 1997. David Aardsma, Lance Pendleton, Mario Ramos, Wade Townsend, Josh Baker, and Phil Humber are all Rice pitchers were hampered by injuries after being drafted.

Rice's coach used to work his guys to death.

He’s gotten a lot better at it in the last few years, though, after he was educated on what he was doing wrong. Five years ago, I wouldn’t have taken a Rice arm high, either, but these days I wouldn’t worry any more than I would about any other pitcher.

I like his size and his projectibility. From that little report I read he seems to have good control and a solid mix of pitches, but for me, I’d like to see them get a top SS

I wish we picked higher..

I think Lucas Giolito is the gem of the draft, and I hope we take Kenny Diekroeger; he looks like Tulowitzki 2.0

by FusilliJerry88 on Feb 2, 2012 9:47 PM EST reply actions

Yay on Giolito

Not so much on Diekroger. Wouldn’t mind Cecchini though…

by NastyNate82 on Feb 2, 2012 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

I agree with literally both things you said precisely.

Giolito is #1 for sure.

I also see Diekroeger as a Tulo guy. He has that ceiling in my opinion. Elite bat speed and elite athleticism. I think we can get him in the supplemental though if we are lucky.

Dream draft is probably Gausman and Diekroeger + more.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Feb 4, 2012 6:17 AM EST up reply actions

from his ratings on mlb.com and BA as of right now, dont you think diekroeger would be quite a reach at #8 overall? yeah players can definitely raise their stocks until the draft. i like zunino, roache, marrero (if he falls for some reason), or correa at #8

by rinsana11 on Feb 4, 2012 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Eh, not so much.

Ratings are still very fluid at this point. If Diekroger’s the guy you like, take him. As of right now, I wouldn’t rule out anyone in the top 60 or so as a possible pick at our slot. Look at how much Kershaw moved up in his draft year…

by Vlad on Feb 5, 2012 1:32 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Sounds like

athletic as he is though, he may move off SS and to the OF. I’d be more hesitant to draft him if he has to be moved.

by NastyNate82 on Feb 4, 2012 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

me personally, I like that Mike Zunino, the catcher out of Florida. depending on what happens with Tony Sanchez from her on out, might not be a bad idea to draft a guy thats scouted as a overall solid catcher both defensively and has power. so im thinking it could be him, roache (as previously stated), or if marrero falls by any means he’ll be the slam dunk choice for them with the thin amount of SS depth in the system. and in the comp rounds i would love to take christian walker, the 1st baseman with tons of pop out of South Carolina. the kid is an absolute stud and would add some much needed pop in the system. he won the High School Power Showcase in Tampa in 2009. and guess who he out-hit and outperformed in that Power Showcase?? BRYCE HARPER HIMSELF!!! i could see him as being a real diamond in the rough

is someone i would look out for too
