A.J. Burnett Sends Dan McCutchen's Unborn Daughter To College
In exchange for D-Cutch giving up uniform number 34, Burnett has promised to set up a college fund for his daughter (due in May).
Early returns, Burnett seems like a decent guy.

Pretty Cool
I imagine by the time college rolls around, Dan won’t necessarily be rolling in the dough.

wow
DCutch swung a solid deal, although I’m not quite sure what starting a college fund means… putting in the first cheque? Or taking care of all of it!
terms haven't leaked yet
My guess is that it’ll be a decent-sized first check, but obviously that’s just a guess.

agreed
uniform numbers don’t typically go on the cheap.

My guess would be a mutual fund or something where he makes an initial investment and it gains value with bonds, stocks, and whatever.

Yeah,
because that’s worked out real well for me the last three years.
The market has actually performed well during the 2009, 2010, and 2011 periods.
At least on a nominal basis.

yeah, if you started investing in that time frame
if you invested before 2009, not so much

I know
Just pointing out that the 3 year result was actually quite good. The 4 year result was terrible.

Dan McCutchen’s negotiating skills are sooo much better than Jose Tabata’s. Burnett should have taken #31.
thats a hell of a price to pay
for a number!

Depends on where she goes.
If she decides to become an electrician, then it won’t cost as much as becoming a doctor.

if its union it doesn't cost a thing,
just time and effort. its not like he is on the hook for her total educational costs. its like a savings account, an amount is put in and invested. you withdraw money and apply it toward your education. if it is misapplied you pay additional taxes.

its not a bottomless pit,
unless no relation worded the contract that way. which i doubt aj’s legal adviser signed off on.

If she goes to Harvard,
she can thank the Yankees for 2/3 of it.

Great to see
Instead of buying him a nice watch, or paying for a vacation or something, this will be huge for the McCutchen’s in the future. Being a useful MLB piece is nice, but doesn’t rake in the dough. She’ll be extremely thankful not to have student loans. At least I know I would be.

Who knows what portion of the fund it is
Still, excellent gesture. This is at least a good use of the vast amounts of money these guys make.

So much for him being a clubhouse problem.

in 20 years
college will be about $15K per semester and that’s for a 4 year public school.
Essentially it will be somewhere around 120-200-even up to 500K
D Cutch certainly got the better end of that deal.
Are you saying that...
Tuition costs will come down to 15k a year in 20 years? Interested to see your math here – the subtraction of current prices from now + 20 years of inflation, damn. What the hell is on the horizon that I’m missing? :)
15k a semester is 30k a year

this is awesome
i was definitely sold on AJ Burnett numbers wise coming over here, but honestly thought he was a giant toolbox. I’m really warming up to him. Might have to make Burnett Vodka signs ‘cheap for us but still gets the job done!’ or something. His interviews have been cool, and hearing all about how he’s a good teammate. good stuff
Classy guy that Burnett fella.

She will be the first female MLB player and the Pirates will draft her straight out of high school.

I noted this on an earlier thread but it seems more appropriate here, given Burnett’s largesse:
Burnett was a guy who supposedly had some character issues earlier in his career. Or at least that was the perception. While I favored the trade on paper I wondered about those. But everything I’ve read thus far, particularly the piece in the Trib today suggests that he might be an asset to to team chemistry and someone who’s eager to help the younger guys (Morton, McDonald, etc). Off course it’s spring training so everything is rosy but none the less.

yeah
I’d heard some rumblings that Burnett was specifically kind of a dick to younger players. He is doing a very good job of convincing me that he isn’t.

based on hanging around pinstripe alley around the time of the trade
i can say that one thing that was mentioned there was that Burnett mentoring Ivan Nova was crucial to his performance last year.
My take on it
…is that he’s “starting” a college fund (a "College America 529 to be exact, not funding an entire college tuition. Even if it’s just a couple grand, it’s a nice gesture. I doubt li’l Miss McCutchen (best of wishes for a healthy delivery) will matriculate through Vassar on AJ’s donation alone. But maybe the opportunity to smoosh a little cupcake-sized pie in her face could grease the wheels a bit.

That's a class move
Even if you put in 50k at 5% avg/year it would double in about 15 years. That’s a pretty nice chunk of change for college and possible even in today’s investment climate.

It's not hard, as long as you are looking at long term time horizons.

Actually i looked and for the last 15 years ending yesterday you would have returned just under 5%/yr on the S&P 500. That’s a pretty safe investment with that long a horizon and it includes one of the worst periods in the last 100 years.
Now back to work. :)

Sounds about rate
T-Bills are just under 3.5% for that time. Take a little risk, and you’ll be set.

if you give it to me
i’ll double it in 10 :-)
college tuition is crazy. I remember back when I (my parents) was (were) paying $300 per semester and it seemed like too much!

My day is ruined
I’ve got literally 100x this in debt from college.
