The thread is here — there was another thread that wasn’t the real thread, so don’t post questions in that one.
Not actually affiliated with whygavs.

Thanks.
Finally got a chance to ask the question I’ve wanted him to answer for years: What would he have made of Gary Redus as a prospect after the 1978 season?
I saw that
but he hasn’t answered yet, dammit. That is a REALLY good question.
Sickels didn’t know the answer but I asked him why scouts use the 20-80 scale instead of (and maybe this is just too crazy) 0-100. Anybody on here have any insight on this one?

Comes from the 3 sigma rule in statistics
Which basically says that in a normal distribution 68% of results will be within one standard deviation of the mean, 95% will be within two standard deviations, and 99.7% will be within three. The mean is set at 50 and each 10 points would represent one standard deviation. So basically 68% of all players should be between 40 and 60 on any given tool, 95% should be between 30 and 70, and everyone will fall between 20 and 80. Theoretically, since only 99.7% would fall in that range in a normal distribution there could be a very, very small number of players who fall outside the range, but they just go ahead and throw everyone between those two numbers. Basically there should be very few 20s and very few 80s, a ton of 50s, and everyone but the select few between 30 and 70.
Hopefully that made some sense to you.

Damn, beat me to it
This exactly, perfect explanation
The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.
Perspectives become reality.

Egghead likes his booky-wook!

But seriously, 3 sigma explanation is spot on.

Sickels gave him a B
(pending other available scouting reports). I can’t help but chuckle at the woe-is-me, poor us, anti-Pirates bias fury that would be strewn about if a Pirates prospect (even a 21 year old in Rookie Ball) put up those numbers and was only a B prospect…
