Radio Update?

With Spring Training just a couple of weeks away I'm wondering if anybody has heard anything about the plans for pre- and post-game shows and hosts on the new flagship (93.7 The Fan).

I'm not optimistic, but I'm hoping BD regular David Todd makes the jump. I'd be okay with Rocco DeMarro as well. I also wouldn't be shocked to see a blogger have a regular roll in the show. However, I've heard nothing and would appreciate any updates yinz can provide. I'll be severly disappointed if any of the regular hosts on the KDKA formats are simply told to run a Pirates-centric talk show after games instead of something in the mode of what Rocco & DT provided in recent years at ClearChannel.

Good day.

(sorry if this is in appropriate use of a FanPost but I couldn't figure out how to make the FanShot work).

The impression I get

Is that they want to stay in house. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to pair one of their current hosts with a former player. I really really hope it’s not Vinnie, but you know he’s begging for it.

Rocco has said that they basically told him they weren’t interested at all.

Wonder why he has been shut out?

I always liked Rocco. Definitely better than half the guys they have on there now. I half expect Colin Dunlap to take the pre or post game duties.

I liked Rocco as well.

Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?

in case you guys were wondering

Rocco is now working a lot for this video game website – http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mission/

He remains a great fellow and knowledegable Buccos fan

I’m still assuming Chris Mueller is going to do the post game show, and I’m ok with that because he’s pretty much the only guy I can stand anymore on that station. Would rather have David or Rocco though.

he knows NFL well. He is a total pitchfork getting pot stirring muck raking yellow journalist though.

i’m not a caller of radio shows but he has ENRAGED me before driving home from work so much so that i’ve had to call and correct him

he's definitely not afraid to stick by an unpopular opinion

given all of the Fan’s in-house options, I think filliponi is the best choice. again, compared to the other in-house choices.

Filliponi has a tough job

He has a lot of time to kill by himself and does an okay (if not simplistic, predictable) job of it. That said, he would be a bad choice for substantive, Pirates-centric shows. There is nothing in his body of work to suggest a familiarity with the organization anywhere near that of DT or Rocco. This is a guy who suggested before the 2010 season that Bobby Crosby was the key to a successful season. (In fairness, the station was brand new at that time and I believe he was new to Pittsburgh; but that was still a remarkably stupid take).

Further, he is too much of an antagonist just for the sake of creating what he deems good radio. Last night Filliponi asked whether Mike Tomlin needs to be looking over his shoulder at Todd Haley. He was seriously suggesting that the 5 year, young, veteran coach of the Steelers who has been to two Super Bowls and won is going to resent having Haley on his staff because Haley has a long family history with the Steelers. That is a pretty fair example of Filliponi and why he would be an awful fit for Pirates coverage.

I think the Pirates will loss traction with the fan base if there isn’t a host with strong appreciation for where the team has been, how it got there, where it is, what the new regime has been doing, and an ability to realistically assess the team. DT and Rocco (and to be clear, I much prefer DT) brought that to the table. With the possible (and it is a slight possiblity) exception of Mueller, I don’t believe any of the current show hosts on The Fan have the chops to do the job well. If I’m The Fan and was insisting on using a current host and not including Rocco or DT, I’d be calling Charlie or Pat or some other good Pirates blogger about being a co-host.

Good day.

Good day.
