In his day...

This guy was a hitting machine

by ballparkfranks on Feb 7, 2012 6:34 PM EST reply actions

Would not necessarily call him a hitting machine

by PensRock1 on Feb 7, 2012 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, so was Yogi Berra. Let’s see if he’s available.

by Aphthakid on Feb 8, 2012 8:44 AM EST up reply actions

ha!

Rather have Delwyn. At least he took Strasburg deep.

by Woo! on Feb 7, 2012 6:50 PM EST reply actions

well, uh, idk what to say…the dude could hit, but he is older now and well, i don’t have a strong recollection of his job in the field, we can’t hide him as a DH in the NL

He’s appeared in 54 major league games at 3B. Looking at his fielding stats at the position…I’d have to say he can’t play 3B.

by Thunder on Feb 7, 2012 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

sadly,

he could probably come close to winning the 1st base job.

They might need to reinforce the dugout benches with him Pedro and McGehee.

I'm fine with this.

Young always had a lot of natural ability, he really did work hard to get into shape, and it doesn’t cost anything to just take a look.

by Vlad on Feb 7, 2012 8:50 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I’d guess that if he didn’t make the 25 man, he’d have to have some promises (on major league roster by a certain date) to go to Indy. Otherwise, he’d probably go back to retirement.

by Thunder on Feb 7, 2012 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

Probably depends on exactly how good he looks, I’d think.

Most likely a NRI with an out clause, and then go forward from there.

by Vlad on Feb 8, 2012 8:22 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I'm not expecting much...unless...

he found Mr. Peabody’s Wayback Machine or Doc Brown’s DeLorean.

Is this the new dumpster you were hoping for NH to dive into?

It’s at least a different dumpster. One that has players in it that were actually successful at one time…in the major leagues.

Hard to imagine

that he’s got any bat speed left. but stranger things have happened I guess.

Redeemed.

A couple of thoughts

On the one hand we are a young team and it wouldn’t seem to fit in the outfield. You would be taking away at bats from either presley, tabata, or McLouth. That is assuming that Mclouth is going to return to a semi decent player, if not then Young could be a nice 4th outfielder for us. Also keep in mind that at some point Marte is probably going to press for some playing time as well. First base wouldn’t be out of the question if Pedro can’t hit and McGee plays 3B. That doesn’t seem like the best solution either. It could free up the possibility of a trade. Presley or Tabata for a 1B or maybe a AAA pitcher on the verge. The Young could keep the spot warm until Marte is ready and Mclouth could serve as a decent backup plan.

The reason I do like this is because it is a feel good story. It could generate interest for the Pirates and if he did become the come back player of the year it would improve the team. Never hurts to try him out and see what he has left in the tank. Would be a fan favorite for sure.

He isn’t a first baseman, either, although he’s been known to stand near the bag.

Would be a fun success to watch

and if not, no harm. A little extra interest in ST.

Is Jim Bowden wearing a hair piece?

If Young could be productive, at least at the the plate, as a Fat…then maybe he can have equal success as a Skinny, despite his advanced age? I say give it a shot, especially if it requires little risk on the Pirates part.

by rj.reynolds on Feb 8, 2012 1:25 AM EST reply actions

do we give Young a shot...

and forget about guys like Evans? If young plays well in ST, I could see us packaging Jones in a nice deal and letting Young platoon with mcgehee/evans

by white angus on Feb 8, 2012 8:09 AM EST up reply actions

There’s a reason that Evans was available as a NRI. You use him if he’s the best you’ve got, but you don’t go out of your way to clear a spot for him.

by Vlad on Feb 8, 2012 8:24 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

he came to us i thought

probably see’s us as his best shot to make it.

by karreemofwheat on Feb 8, 2012 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

I think that falls more under the heading of “bringing in competition”. Everybody loves competition, right?

And if Evans can’t outplay a 38-year-old who hasn’t played pro ball in four years during spring training, he probably doesn’t deserve a spot on the roster.

by Vlad on Feb 8, 2012 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

but wouldnt you rather see what Evans brings instead of an old retread?

but like you said, couldnt really hurt, especially since it would be a minor league deal. its not like they gave him $5MM and gave him the 1B job.

by white angus on Feb 8, 2012 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

but wouldnt you rather see what Evans brings instead of an old retread?

Not really, no. Neither one is likely to be a part of the 2013 roster, so we may as well let the best man win this year. If that turns out to be Young, so be it.

by Vlad on Feb 8, 2012 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

at who's expense?

neither are on the 40 man much less the 25. and we cant take ciriaco off… or can we??? hes around here somewhere, right?

by white angus on Feb 8, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

if by “around here” you mean Boston.

by Garrett122 on Feb 8, 2012 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

at who’s expense?

I’d love to get Correia off the roster, but if the front office were going to bump a guy, I think they might go with Harrison.

by Vlad on Feb 8, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

i know everyone wants to rid themselves of KC

but since that aint happenin just yet… I could see Harrison being bumped. but hes not on the 25 man is he? if hes not, then whom gets the mighty axe?

by white angus on Feb 8, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Right now, most people are pencilling Fox or Evans in for the last position player slot on the 25-man. So that’s the one that Young would be getting instead.
