Speaking of SB nation errors

is that supposed to be Jackie Chan on the error screen? If so, why?

Its an internet meme thing.

Wow, I never realized how old Marte looks...

I was thinking that about a lot of these guys. I was discouraged until I looked at their DOB and realized most of them are still younger than me.

I'll admit

Reading this list makes me more optimistic, and more forgiving of NH not signing another SP. I still don’t think it’s actually a good policy, but if NH is convinced that one of Locke, McPherson, and Owens will be ready to step forward – in a big way – this year, then I could understand his reluctance to put cash towards a likely mediocrity like Francis.

I’d still rather see a situation with Morton and Maholm ensconced, Bedard giving us whatever he can, and the remaining starts divided among Lincoln, McDonald, Karstens, Locke, McPherson, and Owens rather than knowing that Correia, McDonald, Lincoln, and Karstens are all likely to start 25+ games no matter what the MiLers do.

by JRoth95 on Feb 8, 2012 12:54 PM EST reply actions

concur

This is why i was posting about how unless we’re signing a SIGNIFICANT upgrade like EJax – getting filler fringey types like Jeff Francis is a total waste of time. Brad Lincoln is ready to step in and in my opinion be better than nearly every FA pitcher available minus the top ones. He should also be better than our fifth starter Kevin Correia. That’s just Brad Lincoln – those other pitchers have the chance to step up too.

by Mingy on Feb 8, 2012 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, this is what I've been saying all along wrt Maholm

it’s comforting to have a Maholm around, but NH is going for the upside play here, in the hope that someone like Martis/Lincoln/Locke/Owens (quite possibly more than one) gets a real good look.

Charlie

That’s a very encouraging list of prospects. Is there anyway we can see the same top 20 for the Cards, Reds, Brewers and Cubs? Just thought it would be cool to compare.

Right there on that page

Click where it says PIRATES – that’s a drop-down menu. They haven’t gotten to every team, but they have done the entire NLC.

random irrelvant post

BUT me and a few of my buddies just secured 20 game ticket plans on the RF Clemente wall (row b! super pumped!) and anyway – we’re going to try to be Jose Tabata’s fan club. Anyone have clever Tabata slogans? We can do something with the Wall, Clemente Jr., I like a da Peesburgh, idk. Just wanted to get you guys input

by Mingy on Feb 8, 2012 1:31 PM EST reply actions

yeah. Tabata def deserves a crew out there. Feel like i’m going to be snagging multiple Rod Barajas bombs this year. We’re going to be in section 143 row b!

a two digit odometer (numbers in boxes) that is turning from 21 to 31?

Jose can you see?

ta – BAT – a?

Hit this sign (in Spanish)?

by crusty on Feb 8, 2012 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

would it be “golpee este signo?” My Spanish isn’t great and I can’t remember if golpear is only for hitting something physically. Would hitting a baseball be a different verb?

by bolton on Feb 8, 2012 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

OH!

just thought of a good one – haha how about we wear shirts and ties and have signs that say “tabata’s former agents” and “we quit!”

by Mingy on Feb 8, 2012 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

or go dressed as babies, with diapers...

wear tshirts that say “Jose’s wife stole us and all we got was this lousy tshirt”

Similar to posting K's for pitcher strikeouts

Seeing as how Clemente is his hero,

something along the lines of ¡ARRIBA, Tabata! would seem to be in order.

they used to have those for Clemente right? I think the Odometer one and this arriba one we can definitely make happen.

I friggin love Jose Tabata

Whole lot of people got on the Alen Hanson bandwagon in a hurry, didn’t they?

by Vlad on Feb 8, 2012 1:51 PM EST reply actions

I might be misremembering

But I think he was KGoldstein’s sleeper pick for the system when he did the podcast on the Pirates top 11. Seems since then I’ve heard the name come up a lot more.

Redeemed.

I’ll join the bandwagon when he handles full-season ball. I’ve seen too many exciting GCL and AZL players stumble on the next step.

by bolton on Feb 8, 2012 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

yep this

I like Osuna more than Hanson right now, but I’m going to wait for both to do something in full season ball before getting excited.

Ken Rosenthal AND Buster Olney

speculating that Yanks should trade Burnett to us for GFJ and money. I’d totally be down for this. Let Nick Evans play urvvvy day

by Mingy on Feb 8, 2012 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

None of this is all that surprising

However I do not see how you have Rudy Owens ranked higher than Von Rosenberg and Cain. They are three years younger and if I was going to bet on someone more likely to make a splash in the majors it would be the young guys. No offense to Owens, he kept pitching well when everyone was waiting for him to drop off, but last year he seemed to show a little bit more of his true colors I think . He might be able to jump in as a spot starter, but nothing more than a 4 or 5. Locke is the only guy I am really optimistic about coming up this year. Wilson will likely come up and do fine in the bullpen. I would really consider getting Burnett this year to round out our rotation.

by sidbreamslegs on Feb 8, 2012 2:57 PM EST reply actions

Take a look at what Owens was doing at their respective levels...

2-3 years ago. He was much farther along, and performing very well.

by goodtymes31 on Feb 8, 2012 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

well, to be frank, Owens was ranked very highly BEFORE 2011

his fall was sharp but he still has a shot to turn it around. Cain has yet to take a step forward and other than ZVR’s K totals, he really hasnt leaped either

by white angus on Feb 8, 2012 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

Mcgehee has allegedly lost 20 lbs. Trade Jones throw McGeHee in at first. You haven’t really lost anything and you get Burnett instead of Correira.

by The Dog on Feb 8, 2012 3:08 PM EST reply actions

id feel more comfortable with McGehee and a platoon partner with sure power. But I do endorse us trading GFJ for Burnett

Thats what she said! - Michael Gary Scott

is a long way up that list for a guy with that big a question mark.
