"Total speculation: I wonder if a Garrett Jones/A.J. Burnett swap might make sense, with the Yankees eating about 90 percent of owed Burnett."

i could as well

though some reports are saying the yanks were only willing to eat $8M of his $33M salary.

by johnnycuff on Feb 8, 2012 1:49 PM EST reply actions

then they'll eat the whole thing

That leaves Burnett costing over $20 million more than Jones. He’s not worth $20 million more.

Jones for Burnett + $8 million + Dellin Betances might be a fair trade, and I’m not joking at all.

in a heartbeat, i d do it

fwiw, Jones has a chance to M.A.S.H. in that park

by BurgherKing on Feb 8, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

The new yankee stadium is less of a hitter’s park than Coors or Arlington if you look at park factors. But yeah that is a very short right field porch.

right

the amount of salary that was changing hands is what gave me pause.

Honestly, I wouldn’t take that. I don’t like Betances that much.

by Vlad on Feb 8, 2012 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

Why not?

Control issues? Think he’s slated for the pen? Both? I think those are the two major complaints against Betances.

by NastyNate82 on Feb 8, 2012 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

his walk totals in upper levels are really dreadful

but I could see a GFJ for Burnett (yanks pay half) and Detances swap

by BadAndy on Feb 8, 2012 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

His BB numbers are bad, yes

But even with really bad BB numbers, he’ s still 2:1 K/BB. Which shows he’s got tremendous stuff…I’d take that, Burnett, and 8 mill. Bucs aren’t giving up a centerpiece in Jones.

by NastyNate82 on Feb 8, 2012 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

Both?

Both. He’s a solid prospect, but there’s too much downside risk for me to be willing to make that kind of financial commitment to get him.

by Vlad on Feb 9, 2012 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

fair enough

I mean, I was just taking something like just under 4 wins of surplus value, translating that into the Victor Wang prospect scale, knocking that down a bit, and looking for a Yankees prospect who was about in that range according to some folks.

by WHYG Zane Smith on Feb 8, 2012 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

I think when looking at this

you have to think like the Yankees would (since thats MUCH different than an organization like the Bucs). Jones would likely play a small part for them…they have Swisher and Texeira getting the lion’s share of starts in RF and 1B, so Jones would be a DH, and against righties only. I highly doubt they’d think that they’d trade Burnett, one of their better prospects and 20 mill just for Jones…

by NastyNate82 on Feb 8, 2012 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

well, I don't think anyone thinks that trade proposal is happening

I’m just saying that if the Yankees wanted to have the Pirates take $25M of Burnett’s salary and they wanted a player back for him, they’d need to send over a nice prospect as well. From the Pirates’ perspective, they’d be giving up their primary first baseman (the fat half of the platoon, anyway) and taking on a lot of salary they couldn’t afford super well. I think there’s no way NH does that.

All this is probably moot, because as I said it seems more likely that the Yanks were talking about paying all but $8M of Burnett’s salary, rather than only paying $8M. (Aside: These are large sums of money. Even disappointing major league players are very good at what they do and are compensated handsomely, by most people’s standards.)

looking at the quote

it may be that the Yanks are willing to eat all but $8M of his salary. That would be much more sensible.

If that’s all they’re willing to eat, then they won’t get anything but other people’s millstones back in return.

Yanks just signed Russell Branyan

not sure if that would end any speculation about Jones

by white angus on Feb 8, 2012 2:28 PM EST reply actions

Probably not.

They’re looking for a lefty 1B/OF/DH bat (e.g. Damon, Ibanez, Matsui), and Branyan is a righty.

How about Jones for Hughes straight up?

I know the rumor is Burnett, but I’ve seen that they may have to settle on moving Hughes.

I could feel his muscle tissues collapse under my force. It's ludicrous these mortals even attempt to enter my realm. ~~ Mike Tyson

by Cheap Beer on Feb 8, 2012 3:08 PM EST reply actions

I'd love it

but they won’t do it. I think they’re kind of looking at this year as a major make-or-break year for Hughes. He showed a lot of promise in his first full year as a starter in 2010 before he wore down and in 2011 he was hurt quite a bit. Jones is strictly a platoon player and I don’t see the Yanks as trading a potential solid young starter for one of those.

by NastyNate82 on Feb 8, 2012 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

if this trade were to happen, watch and see…i can just see it now. Jose Bautista 2.0…. a majority of pirate fans would be happy to see him gone (granted, if its a good return) due to his streakyness in a pirate uniform and his inability to hit left handed pitching. but then he’ll end up putting up great numbers with the yanks (see Bautista, Jose in toronto) and people will then tack him onto the list of the “Pirates trading away players once they get good” just like they catagorize Bautista nowadays. personally, I don’t think Jones’ potential has been tapped into completely and this would be pretty much giving up on his development as a power hitter. but thats just me

yeah i posted it on both so i could see opinions from both sides hahaha. since Charlie’s articles seem to garner more attention with commenters than a typical FanPost

Would this make Jake Fox our 1B?

by Mr. E on Feb 8, 2012 4:27 PM EST reply actions

between you and me, Mr. E...

would you swap Jones for Burnett? get the decent SP and try to patch 1B… or keep Jones
and still have to patch 1B and hope Lincoln comes through?

by white angus on Feb 8, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

I'd give D. Lee one last call

If he says what I think he’ll say and even assuming the $$ is right I’d probably decline for Jones, because I believe in the pitching depth more than 2/3 of Pedro/Mcgehee/Evans being good this year. Also, Burnett always struck me as a guy who relied more on stuff, and being 35, his FB isn’t what it used to be.

by Mr. E on Feb 8, 2012 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

"I'd give D. Lee one last call"

…only if NH has unlimited minutes on his plan. Otherwise, it’s not even worth the dime for the call. He’s not coming back.

I’m pretty sure the Pirates and NH are not on DLee’s Friends and Family Plan.

by Yung-Han on Feb 8, 2012 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

Does he really hate the game that much?

That he’d just walk away rather than make a couple million dollars?

by Mr. E on Feb 9, 2012 3:02 AM EST up reply actions

He has to walk away sometime

Maybe he’d rather do it on his own terms.

by WHYG Zane Smith on Feb 9, 2012 7:54 AM EST up reply actions

No,

he specifically doesn’t want to play for the Pirates.

From what I’ve read, he’s holding out for about 3-4 teams to offer him something.

I hope like hell he signs somewhere – we could use the pick.

No way

If we clear some of their salary, we give them nothing.
I say scrub prospect and we pay 12 million over 2.
