A.J. Burnett To Have Surgery To Fix Orbital Bone

145

A.J. Burnett's orbital bone was broken in yesterday's bunting misadventure, and he'll have surgery on it tomorrow. The extent of the injury won't be clear until the surgery, so until tomorrow, it looks like we won't have much of a sense of when he'll be back. This stinks, but the amount of self-pity pouring out of the Pirates' fanbase on this one is excessive. This isn't a "curse." Yes, it's unfortunate that this happened right after he was acquired, but every team has injuries. This is one reason it was good that the Pirates acquired Burnett to begin with. And it isn't as if Burnett tore his labrum. The thing that annoys me most about this is that Burnett hurt himself while practicing bunting. This isn't Clint Hurdle's fault, obviously, since all NL teams have to practice bunting, but I still hate that pitchers have to bat at all. Even though I'm a Pirates fan, I watch sports for the chance to see people do things at which they excel, not to see them do things at which they're incompetent. It's like forcing a running back to kick a field goal, because he's the one who ran on third down. I know I'm in the minority on this, though, so I'll stop the hijack here.
