No huge surprises here, I don't think. But:
-P- For Curve fans, the big names here obviously are Grossman and Sanchez, with Curry, Cunningham, Cabrera, Gonzalez, Santos, Cumpton, Black and Welker as lesser lights. The amount of star power is likely to increase during the season, since Gerrit Cole will hopefully be in Altoona within a month or two.
-P- It will be interesting to see how the Pirates divide up playing time at catcher between Sanchez and Cabrera. (Another prospect, Carlos Paulino, will likely be at Bradenton.)
-P- The Bucs are being somewhat aggressive with Cumpton, who only spent half a season at Class A+. The Pirates seem to like him a lot, so that isn't necessarily surprising. The Bucs are being mildly aggressive with Cunningham, too, although this is the assignment I expected. It will be interesting to see how he does in Class AA, given his issues controlling the strike zone last year.
-P- The fact that Lambo isn't in Class AAA is a little disappointing.
-P- Phil Irwin is hurt right now; my guess is that he'll head to Altoona when he's healthy. Eliecer Cardenas, the reliever acquired for Matt Diaz last year, probably will as well.
-P- Black barely has any experience above the South Atlantic League, but it looks like the Pirates are determined to see what they have.
