The MLB draft is a hard thing to judge. A decade should be sufficient to look back and find out what could have been. A recent Keith Law article had the Pirates picking Curtis Granderson with the first pick in a redraft. So with the benefit of hindsight I decided to dive into the first 3 rounds of misery and what I found was shocking.
A Pirate fan clearly remembers the Bryan Bullington wiff but what really makes a pick a bust is the player(s) the team passed on. Instead of Bullington my fantasy pick would have been Prince Fielder who went 7th overall to the Brewers, Round 2 instead of Blair Johnson we could have taken Joey Votto who the Reds snatched up 2 picks later and in Round 3 instead of Taber Lee we could have taken a shot on Curtis Granderson who went 7 picks later to the Tigers. Out of the 43 players selected only 5 made it to the major leagues with only Matt Capps and Nyjer Morgan posting positive WAR this gets my vote for worst Pirates draft of the decade.
