After a poor start, Pedro is starting to hit. Where Have You Gone Andy Van Slyke has a nice piece on Pedro’s slow starts (http://whygavs.com/pittsburgh-pirates/april-2012/pedro-alvarezs-weird-start.html)
As the season moves along we will find out which is the real Pedro. But the question I want to pose is "What is the minimum Pedro needs to do this year for him to remain a starter in 2013?"
Some references to go by using possible (hopefully!) similar hitters: Willie Stargell, Barry Bonds
, Ryan Howard
, Prince Fielder
, Jason Heyward
. I am looking at how well these players did in their 2nd year because given Pedro’s injury last year, I consider him in his 2nd year. Note Pedro is 25 years old.
Willie Stargell (Age 24): .273 .304 .501 .805 124
Barry Bonds (Age 22): .261 .329 .492 .821 114
Ryan Howard (Age 26): .313 .425 .659 1.084 167
Prince Fielder (Age 23): .288 .395 .618 1.013 157
Jason Heyward (Age 21): .227 .319 .389 .708 94
IMHO, if Pedro matched his 2010 line of .256 .326 .461 .788 112, I would consider that good enough for him to keep his job.
