Minor League Roundup: Rudy Owens Has a Good Start, Uses Up All the Good Pitches in the System

A full Sunday slate:

-P- Indianapolis put six on the board early and breezed to an 8-1 win over Rochester. #FreeRudyOwens went six, allowing one run on six hits and a walk. He fanned three. Dan Moskos, Jose Diaz and a rehabbing Chris Leroux each threw a scoreless inning with no hits or walks. Moskos and Leroux fanned one each, Diaz two. Leroux took a lot of pitches to get through his inning, throwing 11 of 21 for strikes, but that's understandable for his first AAA outing after a long layoff. Jake Fox and Yamaico Navarro each hit HR #2, and Gorkys Hernandez went 3-5. Tony Sanchez went 1-3. There were no steal attempts; since his promotion Sanchez is 3-6 against base stealers.

-P- Altoona lost to Akron, 8-1, as Shairon Martis allowed five runs over 3.2 IP. Martis went into spring training as a potential depth starter for the major league team, but he's been nothing special in AA, so scratch that (not that he's needed). Jeff Inman threw a scoreless inning, walking one and fanning two. The Curve doesn't have much of a lineup with Sanchez gone and Matt Curry, Robbie Grossman, Adalberto Santos and Andrew Lambo all out. They managed seven hits in this game, with Jarek Cunningham going 2-4 with a double and Anthony Norman 2-4 with a triple.

-P- Bradenton got blown out by Jupiter, 11-4. (If you're thinking there's a pattern here, there is.) Starter Tyler Waldron gave up nine runs, eight earned, on 11 hits and a walk in 3.2 IP. He fanned three. Hunter Strickland threw four innings in relief; the Marauders are probably juggling workloads due to the upcoming FSL All-Star break. Strickland gave up two runs on three hits and a walk, and fanned four. Jupiter's Marcell Ozuna blasted three HRs and drove in six. Bradenton managed only five hits, two each by Gift Ngoepe and Andy Vasquez. Ngoepe had a double.

-P- West Virginia got blasted by Asheville, 13-3. Matt Benedict, who's been the Power's only reliable starter for most of the season, gave up 11 runs, seven earned, on nine hits and three walks over 3.2 IP. His defense chipped in four errors. Alen Hanson led off the game with his 9th HR and went 2-5. Willy Garcia went 0-2 but did draw two walks, which is noteworthy for him.
