It's no secret the Pirates are full of holes at just about every position. The Bucs are kind of stuck with certain players like Tabata, 2 hrs 9 rbi and it's almost July. He is signed for quite a few years and he's only 23 so what can you do? Barmes is signed through next season so once again they have to eat it and hope for the best. Alvarez is yet another one they are praying that he finds his swing on a more consistant basis. Our backup catcher is somehow popular despite hitting .167 while Barajas is pretty old and can't throw out anyone.
I think the one trade we could make here at the break would be to get Lavarnway from Boston's AAA team. The guy can flat out hit and he's 24 with improving defensive skills, 33 percent of runners C/S this season. He is blocked with the RedSox current starting catcher. He can play 1B against lefties and have Mghehee play 3B. Sitting Alvarez against lefties for now might not be such a bad idea, only 2 of his 12 homers have come against lefties. The big question is what would we have to give up for him? I have no problem giving Boston the hammer along with a prospect or Lincoln. Anyone have any thoughts?
